Let’s listen to some more facts from William Shakespeare’s biography and the time when he lived and worked.

Pupil 1: the name of William Shakespeare is known all over the world. William Shakespeare is one of the greatest and the most famous writers of the world. The last half of the16th and the beginning of the 17th centuries are known as golden Age of English Renaissance and sometimes are called “The Age of William Shakespeare”

p. 2 .People often called William Shakespeare” Our national bard”, “The immortal Poet of Nature”. We really know few facts of his life and many of them are doubtful. But some facts are known to us and are proved by documents.

p.1The first facts of William Shakespeare’ biography are that he was born on April 23, 1564 in Stratford-on Avon. It was a small English town. His father was a dealer in corn, meat, wool. His father wanted him to be an educated person and William was sent to the local grammar school. William’s mother was a daughter of a rich farmer in the village of Wilmcote.

p.2 We also know that , being 18 years old, William married Anne Hathaway, who was 9 years older that himself. They had a daughter Susanna and twins – son Hamnet and daughter Judith.

p.1 It’s known that in 1567 William Shakespeare went to London, to find a job, where he began writing plays staged at the Globe Theatre. By 1592, he had been an important member of a well-known acting company. There he became an actor. Shakespeare was both an actor and a playwright. In his work he described the most important and dramatic events in life. His plays were staged in many theatres, translated into many languages and they made Shakespeare a very popular man.

p.2. It is known that only in 1611, at the height of his fame, William Shakespeare returned to Stratford, where in April 23, 1616 he died. He was buried in a fine church in Stratford. We don’t know a lot of facts about Shakespeare’s life. We can only guess what kind of man he was, that’s why there many legends about his life.

Р1.The writer’s most famous plays are “Othello”, “King Lear”, “Hamlet”, and “Romeo and Juliet”. He produced 37 plays. He was connected with the best theatres in England for 25 years.

2) Teacher: You have mentioned the main facts in William Shakespeare’s biography. Now , tell me please, do you agree or disagree with some facts.

  1. William Shakespeare was born in the 17th century. Is it true?

As you know, in London William Shakespeare became an actor of the Globe Theatre and began to write plays for it. He wrote tragedies, comedies and historical plays. I’m hope that you know them. So I ask you to divide his plays into tragedies and comedies.

Claudius told everybody that snake had bitten the King. The young prince suspected that Claudius himself had killed the king. How right was he? What ought he to think of his mother? (From “Hamlet, Prince of Denmark”)

Teacher: What was the name of young prince? Well, his name is Hamlet.

Listen to an extract from this famous play:

P3. To be , or not to be, that is the question:

Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer

The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune:

Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,

And by opposing, end them? To die - , to sleep,

No more, and, by a sleep to say we end

The heart-ache, and the thousand natural shocks

That flesh in heir to; ‘tis a consummation

Devoutly to be wish’d. To die, to sleep –

To sleep, perchance to dream…

Быть или не быть – таков вопрос;

5) Teacher: “To be or not to be, that is the question”

  1. The beginning at the end-

  2. The whirling of time – превратности судьбы

  3. There’s the rub –

  4. All is well that ends well – всё хорошо, что хорошо кончается

  5. To win golden opinions –

My love is strengthen'd, though more weak in seeming;
I love not less, though less the show appear:
That love is merchandized whose rich esteeming
The owner's tongue doth publish every where.
Our love was new and then but in the spring
When I was wont to greet it with my lays,
As Philomel in summer's front doth sing
And stops her pipe in growth of riper days:
Not that the summer is less pleasant now
Than when her mournful hymns did hush the night,
But that wild music burthens every bough
And sweets grown common lose their dear delight.

Therefore like her I sometime hold my tongue,
Because I would not dull you with my song.

william shakespeare From fairest creatures we desire increase,
That thereby beauty's rose might never die,
But as the riper should by time decease,
His tender heir might bear his memory:

But thou, contracted to thine own bright eyes,
Feed'st thy light'st flame with self-substantial fuel,
Making a famine where abundance lies,
Thyself thy foe, to thy sweet self too cruel.

Thou that art now the world's fresh ornament
And only herald to the gaudy spring,
Within thine own bud buriest thy content
And, tender churl, makest waste in niggarding.

Pity the world, or else this glutton be,
To eat the world's due, by the grave and thee.

My glass shall not persuade me I am old,
So long as youth and thou are of one date;
But when in thee time's furrows I behold,
Then look I death my days should expiate.

For all that beauty that doth cover thee
Is but the seemly raiment of my heart,
Which in thy breast doth live, as thine in me:
How can I then be elder than thou art?

O, therefore, love, be of thyself so wary
As I, not for myself, but for thee will;
Bearing thy heart, which I will keep so chary
As tender nurse her babe from faring ill.

Presume not on thy heart when mine is slain;
Thou gavest me thine, not to give back again.

Not marble, nor the gilded monuments
Of princes, shall outlive this powerful rhyme;
But you shall shine more bright in these contents
Than unswept stone besmear'd with sluttish time.
When wasteful war shall statues overturn,
And broils root out the work of masonry,
Nor Mars his sword nor war's quick fire shall burn
The living record of your memory.
'Gainst death and all-oblivious enmity
Shall you pace forth; your praise shall still find room
Even in the eyes of all posterity
That wear this world out to the ending doom.

So, till the judgment that yourself arise,
You live in this, and dwell in lover's eyes.

Is it thy will thy image should keep open
My heavy eyelids to the weary night?
Dost thou desire my slumbers should be broken,
While shadows like to thee do mock my sight?
Is it thy spirit that thou send'st from thee
So far from home into my deeds to pry,
To find out shames and idle hours in me,
The scope and tenor of thy jealousy?
O, no! thy love, though much, is not so great:
It is my love that keeps mine eye awake;
Mine own true love that doth my rest defeat,
To play the watchman ever for thy sake:

For thee watch I whilst thou dost wake elsewhere,
From me far off, with others all too near.
