Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen!
Welcome to our party!
We are glad to
see you. We would like to introduce you British culture: English songs, Welsh
ballads, Irish dances, Scottish poetry.
A.(Arbusova R. “Those Evening bells”) –
by Th.Moore
Those evening bells! Those evening bells!
How many a tale their music tells.
Of youth, and home and that sweet time.
When last I heard their soothing chime.
Those joyous hours are passed away
And many a heart that then was gay
Within the tomb now darkly dwells
And hears no more these evening
bells.
And so ‘twill be when I am gone;
That tuneful peal will still ring on
While other bards will walk these dells,
And sing your praise, sweet evening bells.
Everybody knows this poem but not every person knows the
original variant. Listen,
please both of them.( песня на
английском языке-“Вечерний звон”);
И крепок их могильный сон;
В долине ветер разнесет;
England
is the birthplace of William Shakespeare, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Alfred Tennyson
and many others. William Shakespeare is considered to be one of the most famous
writers of poems, sonnets and plays. We can’t speak about Shakespeare without
speaking about his sonnets. Many well-known expressions come from Shakespeare:
“to be or not to be - that is the question!”; some of his sonnets are sung by
modern singers.
C.(Sinyuk M. “Sonnet CXXX”) – by W.Shakespeare
My mistress eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damaskt, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I
love to hear her speak yet well I know
That
music hath a far more pleasing sound;
I
grant I never saw a goddess go;
My
mistress when she walks treads on the ground;
And
yet by heaven I think my love as rare,
As
any she belied with false compare.
The
Lake District is considered to be a real Poets’ Country. Living and
working there English romantic poets described the beauty of nature and
wonderful countryside, expressed their love in verses.
(Song
“Irene”)
Irene good-night
Last Saturday night I got married
Me and my wife settled down
Now me and my wife are parted
I’m gonna take another stroll down town
R: Irene, good-night(2)
Good –night, Irene(2)
I’ll see you in my
dreams.
Sometimes I live in the country,
Sometimes I live in the town,
Sometimes I have a great notion
To jump into the river and drown.
R:
I love Irene, god knows I do.(Do you?)
Love her till the seas run dry(Oh, yes)
And if Irene turns her back on me(Never),
I’m gonna take morphine and die.
R:
D.(Aflatov
A.
“The Willows”) – by R.L.Stevenson
By the little river
Still and deep and brown
Grow the graceful willows
Gently dipping down.
Dipping down and brushing
Everything that floats
Leaves and logs and fishes
And the passing boats
Where they, - water maidens
In the long ago
That they lean out sadly
Looking down below.
In the misty twighlight
You can see their hair,-
Weeping water maidens
That were once so fair.
E.(Glebova K. “Ивы”);
F.(Kirsanova L. “The Lamp”) – by Percy Bysshe Shelly
When the lamp is shattered
The light in the dust lies dead –
When the cloud is scattered
The rainbow’s glory is shed.
When the lute is broken,
Sweet tones are remember not
When the lips have spoken
Loved accents are soon forgot.
G.( Khachatryan A. “England”);
England! With all thy faults I love thee still,
I said at Calais, and have not forgot it.
I like the taxes when they are not too many;
I like a sea-coal fire, when not too dear;
I like a beefsteak, too as well as any;
Have no objection to a pot of beer;
I like the weather when it is not too rainy.
That is, I like two months of every year.
Wales
has not only produced celebrated writers in the Welsh and English languages, it
has inspired poets such as William Wordsworth. He described beautiful
landscapes and amazing valleys of his country.
H.(Glebova Yu. “Birch-Trees”);
The night is white
The moon is high
The birch-trees lean
Against the sky.
The cruel winds
Have blown away
Each little leaf
Of silver grey.
Oh, lonely trees
As white as wool
That moonlight makes
So beautiful.
I.(Usmanova Kh. “The Seasons”);
Oh,
do you remember
When
springtime was here,
The
snowdrops and catkins,
The
bird songs so clear?
Oh, do you remember
The long summer hours,
The hum of the bees
And the scent of the flowers?
Oh, do you remember
When autumn came round
How leaves red and yellow
Lay thick on the ground?
But
now it is winter
The
branches are bare;
There’s
ice on the puddles
And
frost in the air.
I played in the sunshine,
I play in the snow
And which is my favourite?
I really don’t know.
J.(Amirshayeva A. “Thanksgiving”);
Thank
you
For all my hands can hold –
For apples red
And melons gold,
Yellow corn
Both ripe and sweet.
Peas and beans
So good to eat!
Thank
you
For all my eyes can see.
Lovely sunlight,
Field and tree.
White cloud boats
In sea-deep sky.
Soaring bird
And butterfly.
Thank
you
For all my ears can hear –
Birds’ song echoing
Far and near.
Songs of little
Stream, big sea,
Cricket, bullfrog,
Duck and bee!
The
activity of poets is closely connected with the culture of the people. Popular
songs express the mood of Britons and are closely connected with creative work
of the poets. Listen to one of the national songs “My Bonnie”.
My Bonnie
My Bonnie is over the
ocean
My Bonnie is over the sea
My Bonnie is over the
ocean
Oh, bring back my Bonnie
to me.
Ch: Bring back, bring back
Bring back my
bonnie to me 2p
Last night as I lay on my
pillow,
Last night as I lay on my
bed
Last night as I lay on my pillow
I dreamed that my Bonnie
was dead.
Ch:
The winds have blown over
the ocean,
The winds have blown over
the sea,
The winds have blown over
the ocean.
And brought back my Bonnie
to me.

Everybody
knows the name of George Gordon Byron. He was the most outstanding English
romantic poet. His works were already famous during his lifetime and influenced
romantic writers all over Europe. He loved travelling and the result of it
there were a lot of poems.
K. (Panych Eu. “Twighlight”)
–by George Gordon Byron.
It is the hour when from the boughs
The nightingale’s high note is heard;
It is the hour when lovers vows
Seem sweet in every whispered word.
And gentle winds and waters near,
Make music to the lovely ear.
Each flower the dews have lightly wet,
And in the sky the stars are met.
And on the wave is deeper blue
And on the leaf a browner hue,
And in the heaven that clear obscure
So softly dark and darkly pure,
Which follows the decline of day,
As twilight melts beneath the moon away.
L.(Krivina N. “ Сумерки”);
И глубже синева волны;
Every year Britons celebrate Robert Burns’
birthday as a national holiday. We are glad to see you here on the eve of his
birthday, because Robert Burns' birthday is usually celebrated in ALL English-speaking
countries. The celebration is usually held in the form of a supper. You can
hear lots of poems by Burns, devoted to Burns, melodies of Scottish pipes.
M.(Sibirtseva
N. “My heart in the Highlands”) – by Robert Burns;
My heart’s in the highlands, my heart is not here,
My heart’s in the Highlands a-chasing the deer
A-chasing the wild deer, and following the roe –
My heart’s in the Highlands wherever I go!
Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North,
A birthplace of valour the country of worth,
Wherever I wonder, wherever I rove,
The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.
Farewell to the mountains high covered with snow,
Farewell to the straths and green valleys below,
Farewell to the forests and wild hanging woods
Farewell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods!
My heart’s in the highlands, my heart is not here,
My heart’s in the Highlands a-chasing the deer
A-chasing the wild deer, and following the roe –
My heart’s in the Highlands wherever I go!
Now
listen to the translation of the poem.
N. (Marchenko E.. “В горах мое сердце“);
(Taranova L. “The Arrow and The Song”)
I shot an arrow into the air.
It fell to earth, I knew not where.
For so swiftly it flew the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.
I breathed a song into the air.
It fell to earth, I knew not where.
For who has sight so keen and strong
That it can follow the flight of song.
Long, long afterwords in an oak
I found the arrow still unbroken
And the song from beginning to end
I found again in the heart of a friend.
Robert Burns is called a great Scottish
bard. He composed songs for his beloved Jean and she sang them with great
pleasure.
P.
(Pak P. “The Red, Red Rose”)
О my Love's like a red, red
rose,
That's newly sprung in June;
O my Love's like the melodie
That's sweetly play'd in tune.
As fair are you, my bonie lass,
So deep in love am I;
And I will love you still, my Dear,
Till all the seas gang dry.
Till all the seas gang dry, my Dear,
And the rocks melt with the sun:
I will love you still, my Dear,
While sands of life shall run.
And fare you well, my only Love!
And fare you well, a while!
And I will come again, my Love,
Though it were ten thousand mile! '
Бьет девчонку дрожь;
3.Ведущая: In
this picture you can see the most famous portrait of Robert Burns. Here’s the
place where Burns was born. His house is a museum now. Robert Burns poems and
verses inspired not only many famous poets for translations but also musicians
who wrote music to them. The best known cycle of songs to his verses was
composed in our country by G. Sviridov and Gradsky.
Now let’s
listen to some songs.
Dear
