Good afternoon,
dear boys and girls!
Good
afternoon and welcome to our guests!
Welcome to our Christmas party!
Welcome to our party! Today we are going to tell you
about some traditions in Great Britain.
In England Christmas is celebrated on the 25th
of December. There are many traditions and symbols that we associate with
Christmas.
Jesus Christ was born over 2000 years ago in
Palestine, in Bethlehem.
The bells ring in Great Britain on the 25th
of December. In some churches in the UK, it is traditional for the largest bell
in the church to be rung four times in the hour before midnight all the bells
are rung in celebration.
On Christmas Eve (the 24th of December)
some people go to a special church service called Midnight Mass which starts at
midnight.
A carol is a Christmas song. In England they say that
carol singing is as important as Christmas dinner: it isn’t Christmas without
carols.
Carol singers collect
money for charity; one of the most well-known carols is « Silent Night».
The girls sing the Christmas
carol.
Today you have nice paper
hats on. You have made them with your parents. Now please show us your hats and
the judges will choose the best one.
The music is playing and
children are demonstrating their Christmas hats. They are rewarded with prizes.
Houses and apartments are
cleaned very carefully before Christmas. On the door of every house there is a
green garland of holly and above the door there are lots of coloured lights.
A popular present in
December is a Santa’s cap and glasses with a big red nose and a little lamp
inside. Having received this wonderful adornment people put them immediately.
It’s very funny indeed to see a smartly-dressed man in hat or with a walking
stick wearing clown’s spectacles with a nose.
What is the name of the
capital of Great Britain?
Children answer the
question.
Yes, you are right. It is
London.
On the Christmas Eve
offices and public buildings are closed at one o’clock, but the shops stay open
late. Most big cities , especially London, are decorated with coloured lights
across the street and enormous Christmas trees. The train stations, trains and
buses are crowded with people travelling from all parts of the country to be at
home for Christmas.
In the homes there is a
great sense of expectation. Children and adults decorate the trees with tinsel,
various baubles and coloured lights as well. So the first tradition is the
Christmas tree.
Decorating of Christmas
trees with coloured baubles.
There are two teams in
the competition. There are two Christmas trees and two boxes with coloured
balls in front of you. Your task is to choose the right ball quickly and hang
it on your tree. What colours do you know?
Children name the colours
in English. The teams decorate their Christmas trees.
Your team knows the
colours very well. Take your presents, please. Go to your places. Thank you.
Demonstrating a Christmas
stocking.
The next tradition is the
Christmas stocking. A Christmas stocking is not a real stocking. It is big and
beautifully decorated.
Young children are told
that Father Christmas will give them presents if they have been good. Before
going to bed on Christmas Eve the children hang their stockings on the end of
their beds, for Father Christmas to put the presents in when he comes down the chimney
in the middle of the night.
And what would you like
to have in your stockings?
And what about you?
And you, Nikita? What
present would you like to have?
The boy is reciting the
poem «Dear Santa Claus» by A.Carr
Writing letters to Santa
Claus has been a Christmas tradition for children for many years. There are
some ideas about where Santa Claus lives. One of the legends associated with
Santa says that he lives in the far north. Santa Claus lives with his wife Mrs.
Claus, a countless number of magical elves and eight or nine flying reindeers0.
Santa’s official Post
Office is situated in Rovaniemi at the Arctic Circle. You can also write a
letter to Santa Claus. Here is the address. We think Santa Claus will make your
wishes come true.
Pantomime «The Wonderful
Spell»
A pantomime (or «Panto»
for short) is a traditional British Christmas play and chance for people to go
to the theatre. It is a children’s entertainment show in the theatre based on
traditional children’s stories such as Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella.
Men dress up as women and women as men. Pantomime is now a popular family
entertainment. The audience has to work almost as hard as the performers.
Adults and children join in songs, assist in tricks or warm the hero with «He’s
behind you! » and cheer them on!
Questions to the audience
after the pantomime:
-Did
you like our pantomime?
-What were the main
characters of the pantomime?
-What was the story
about?
Christmas Dinner.
The typical meal consists
of turkey with potatoes and other vegetables, followed by a Christmas pudding.
Christmas (or Plum) pudding is the traditional end to the British Christmas
dinner.
Putting a silver coin in
the pudding is another age-old custom that is said to bring luck to the person
that finds it. In the UK the coin traditionally used was silver ‘six pence’.
The closest coin to that now is a five pence piece.
We have a surprise for
you. Here are some biscuits with a lucky coin inside one of them. We invite the
pupil who has found the coin to come up here. Let’s wish them a Merry Christmas
and sing a Christmas song «Jingle bells».
The custom of sending
Christmas cards was started in the UK in 1843 by Sir Henry Cole. He was a
Government worker who was very interested in the new Public Post Office. Sir Henry
and his friend John Horsley who was an artist, designed the first card and sold
the cards for 1 shilling each.
The first cards usually
had pictures of the Nativity scene on them. A Robin (an English bird) and
snow-scenes became popular because the postmen in that time were nicknamed
`Robin Postmen` because of the red uniforms they wore. In the 1910s and 1920s
homemade cards became popular.
Congratulate each other,
your teachers and guests with this wonderful holiday.
Children give their
homemade cards to guests.
Now, let`s remember the
Christmas symbols. What are they?
Children name the symbols
of Christmas.
We wish you a Merry
Christmas!
Let`s sing a song “We
wish you a Merry Christmas” together.
Silent Night
Silent night, Holy night.
All is calm, all is bright.
Round you Virgin, Mother and Child,
Holy infant, so tender and mild.
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night, Holy night.
Shepherds quake at the sight.
Glories stream from Heaven affair
Heavenly hosts sing Hallelujah.
Christ the Savior is born,
Christ the Savior is born.
Dear Santa Claus
Dear Santa Claus, do you suppose
That you could send to me,
Two trains with tracks this Christmas
Eve
If i`m as good as I can be?
You see, dear Mr. Santa Claus,
My daddy likes to play
With all my things, but most of all
He likes the track to lay.
Dear Santa Claus, if you can send
Two trains, why don`t you see,
My dad can play with his own train,
And leave my train for me!
Jingle Bells
Dashing thro` the snow,
In a one-horse open sleigh.
O`er the field we go,
Laughing all the way.
Bells on bobtail ring
Making spirits bright
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight!
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way!
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh,
We wish you a Merry Christmas
We wish you a Merry Christmas!
We wish you a Merry Christmas!
We wish you a Merry Christmas
And a Happy New Year!
