Teacher: You have written
the word “ priest”.
-Why?
Pupil 1: There is a
legend of how St. Valentine`s Day began. According to it St. Valentine was a
priest who married young couples against the orders of the Roman Emperor
Claudius II, who believed that single young men made better soldiers. The story
goes back to about A.D. 200.
Teacher: Are there any
other legends about the origin of this holiday?
Pupil 2 : Others believe
that the word valentine came from a Norman word galantine which
means a lover.
Pupil 3: Some other people
connect the celebrating of Valentine`s Day with an old English belief that
birds choose their mates on February, 14.
3. Развитие навыка чтения (Слайд 4)
Teacher: It is the history
of St. Valentine`s Day. But what do you know about our days? How do people
celebrate St. Valentine`s Day nowadays?
Let`s read the text about
the holiday. You have got some sheets on your desks. Please, find the text
“Festival of Romance and Affection” and read it. Try to find something new
which is associated with the holiday and add it to the spidergram.
Festival of Romance and Affection
Valentine`s Day is celebrated
on February 14th as a festival of romance and affection. People send
greeting cards called “valentines” to their sweethearts, friends, and members
of their families.
Many valentines have
romantic poems; others are humorous. But almost all valentines ask “ Be my
Valentine”. This may mean Be my friend or Be my love or Be my
companion. Valentines often show a cupid with an arrow. Cupid was the
ancient Roman god of love.
The ornaments that
decorate valentines are symbols of love and friendship. Ornaments for early
valentines were made by hand. Each had a special meaning. A fan meant “Open up
your heart”. A ribbon meant “ You are tied up” or “You are my girl”. Lace is
the same on a valentine meant “You have caught my heart in a net”.
Schoolchildren decorate
their classrooms with bright red paper hearts and celebrate the day in their
classroom. They also make valentine cards for their friends and parents.

Совершенствование
навыков чтения и письма.
Teacher: I hope that you will make valentines for all
your friends (I mean girl-friends and boy-friends), for your family and
teachers. By the way, when were the first valentines written?
Pupil: Written valentines
began about 1400. The oldest one we know of was made in 1415.
A Frenchman, Charles, Duke of Orleans, was captured by the English in a
battle. He was put in prison in the Tower of London. There he wrote valentine
poems. Many of them were saved and be seen today in the British Museum.
Teacher: There are many kinds
of valentines nowadays. You can buy them everywhere. But I think that the best
present is that one which is made by yourself. Now we are going to make such a
valentine. I think that you have got all necessary things on your desks (I
mean: paper, scissors and glue.) (Слайды 6-13)
1. Take a sheet of paper and
fold it up.
2. Draw a square in the right
corner of the sheet.
3. Cut it out.
4. Fold up the top part of
the sheet once more and draw a hemisphere on it.
5. Cut the hemisphere out.
Teacher: You have got
valentines on your desks. Before you write something on them let`s remember the
poems and rhymes, which you can write. (Учащиеся читают стихи, рифмовки, пожелания.) (Cлайды 14-15)
Now write your wishes and
poems on the card and colour it if you like.

6. Развитие навыка аудирования.
Teacher: Students and
schoolchildren like this holiday. They have a lot of games and activities to do
on St. Valentine`s Day. This is one of the ways how the English girls get to
know their fortunes on St. Valentine`s Eve. And you, girls, can know your
fortune, too. We need apples and a knife.
Girls, please, cut your
apples in four parts and count the seeds from the apple. Then you will find the
fortune in the poem. (Слайд

7. Подведение итогов урока (Слайд 17)
Teacher: Are you ready for
the holiday?
What have we done?
Pupils: - We have written
valentines.
- We have
decorated our classroom.
- We have
learned songs and poems.
- We have
learned about the history and the origin of St. Valentine`s Day.
Teacher: This happy
holiday celebrates friendship, love and romance. It is time to let all those
special people in your life know how much you like them. This is what friendship
is all about. And you can probably think of others who are important to you –
Mums and Dads, grandparents, sisters, brothers, friends and teachers. Valentine`s
Day is a good time to tell them how you feel.
I wish you love and happiness not only on the 14th
of February but all the year round!
