Pupil 1: The name of
William Shakespeare is known all over the world. The last half of the 16th and
the beginning of the 17th centuries are known as the Golden Age of English
Renaissance and sometimes are called “The Age of Shakespeare”.
Pupil 2: People often
call Shakespeare “Our National Bard”, “The Immortal Poet of Nature”. We really
know few facts of his life and many of them are doubtful. But some facts are
known to us and are proved by documents.
Pupil 3: The first
fact of Shakespeare’s biography is that he was born on April 23, 1564 in
Stratford-on-Avon. His father was a dealer in corn, meat, wool. His mother was
a daughter of a rich farmer in the village of Wilmcote.
Pupil 4: We also know
that being 18 years old, William married Anne Hathaway, who was 9 years older
than himself. They had a daughter Susanna and twins – son Hamlet and daughter
Judith.
Pupil 5: It`s known
that in 1567 Sh. went to London to find a job, where he began writing plays
staged at the Globe Theatre. By 1592 he had been an important member of a
well-known acting company.
Pupil 6: It is known
that only in 1616 at the height of his fame Shakespeare returned to Stratford
where on April 23, 1616 he died. He was buried in a fine old church in
Stratford.
Teacher:
·

Teacher: You have
mentioned the main facts from William Shakespeare’s biography. Now, I`d like
you to agree or disagree with some facts of Shakespeare’s life.
1. Shakespeare was born in the 16th century.
No, it isn’t true. He was born in the 16th century, in
1564.
2. William got a good education in London.
It’s not true. He got his education in a Grammar school
in Stratford.
3. William married late. His wife was younger than him.
It’s false. He married when he was 18. His wife was 9
years older than himself.
4. William Shakespeare had three children: a daughter
Susanna and twin sons.
He really had 3 children: a daughter Susanna and twins,
but they were a daughter Judith and a son Hamnet.
5 He was a poet, a writer, a playwright
It is true.
6. Shakespeare never acted on the stage.

It’s true.
VI.

people all over the world.

VII.
Teacher: You are
going to listen to an extract from a famous play. Do you remember its name? Who
is the main character?
To be, or
not to be, that is the question:
Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune:
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing, end them? To die; to sleep,
No more; and, by a sleep, to say we end
The heart ache, and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh in heir to, ‘tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish ‘d. To die; to sleep;
To sleep!
Быть
или не быть – таков вопрос;

Sonnet
97 is devoted to a young man, Shakespeare’s friend, expressing the
poet's love for him.
Sonnet
XCVII
How like a winter hath my absence been
From thee, the pleasure of the fleeting year!
What freezings have I felt, what dark days seen!
What old December's bareness every where!
And yet this time removed was summer's time,
The teeming autumn, big with rich increase,
Bearing the wanton burden of the prime,
Like widow'd wombs after their lords' decease:
Yet this abundant issue seem'd to me
But hope of orphans and unfather'd fruit;
For summer and his pleasures wait on thee,
And, thou away, the very birds are mute;
Or, if they sing, 'tis with so dull a cheer
That leaves look pale, dreading the winter's near.

My mistress eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damaskt, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to her speak, yet well I know
That music hath a far more pleasing sound:
I grant I never saw a goddess go;
My mistress when she walks treads on the grounds.
And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
As any she belied with false compare.
