Love... The word can have many different meanings. But through all these meanings many people would agree that they want to love and to be loved.

Many famous people wrote or spoke about love. Let's read and translate some of these quotations.

  • "Love looks not with eyes, but with the mind.

  • And thus is winged Cupid painted blind." (W .Shakespeare)

  • "Love is an education in itself."(Eleanor Roosevelt)

  • "Love is life...and if you miss love, you miss life." (Leo Buscaglia)

  • "To love someone is to be the only one to see a miracle invisible to others." (Francois Maurice)

  • "To understand the meaning of true love

  • You must first surrender to it." (R.M.Hoffiiagle)

  • "The course of true love never did run smooth." (W. Shakespeare)

  • "Of love enough can never be said." (W. Shakespeare)

  • "If you try to control love, it will turn to dust.

  • If you let love to control you, you can fly." (Katharine Treibic)

  • "Love is, above all, the gift to oneself." (Jean Anoulh)

  • "Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own." (Robert A. Heinlein)

Here in this box there are children's messages about love. Let's read them and see what love is according to their opinion.

  • "When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails any more. So my father does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love." Rebecca – age 8

  • "Love is what makes you smile when you are tired." Terri – age 4

  • "Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK." Danny – age 7

  • "Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, and then he wears it every day." Noelle – age 7

  • "Love is when mommy gives daddy the best piece of chicken." Elaine – age 5

  • "Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day." Lauren – age 4

  • "You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget." Jessica – age 8

  • "Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other." Karl

Now let you discuss love problems. Could you answer the following questions? What do you think of love? What definition could you give to it? What does it mean to you? What is more important for a person: to love or to be loved?

Many poets wrote verses about love. Let’s listen to them and enjoy the perfect language of love.

William Shakespeare. Sonnet CXVI.

Let me not to the marriage of true minds

Admit impediments; love is not love

Which alters when it alteration finds,

Or bends with the remover to remove.

О no, it is an ever-fixed mark

That looks on tempests and is never shaken;

It is the star to every wand'ring bark,

Whose worth's unknown, although his heighth be taken.

Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks

Within his bending sickle's compass come;

Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,

But bears it out even to the edge of doom.

If this be error and upon me proved,

I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

Remember by Christina Georgina Rossetti

Remember me when I am gone away,

Gone far away into the silent land;

When you can no more hold me by the hand,

Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.

Remember me when no more day by day

You tell me of our future that you plann'd:

Only remember me; you understand

It will be late to counsel then or pray.

Yet if you should forget me for a while

And afterwards remember, do not grieve:

For if the darkness and corruption leave

A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,

Better by far you should forget and smile

Than that you should remember and be sad.

Love is… by Sarah Ramberg

Love is the core of a yellow flame.

Love is the game that remains the same.

Love is the hunger no one can satisfy.

Love is the person that makes you cry.

Love is the person that can burn you.

Love is the person that can be true.

Love is the light that blinds you.

Love is the person you thought you knew.

Love is the person that rips out your heart.

Love is the person that’s with you from the start.

Love is the person that holds you tight.

Love is the cloth with holes, through and through.

Love is the person, it is you.

Let's continue our discussion. The questions to you are:

How do you think, how many times a person can love?

Can there be love as long as life?

People write about their love to their beloved. Listen to some extracts from such letters.

Napoleon Bonaparte to Josephine De Beauharnais

Paris, December 1795

I wake filled with thoughts of you. Your portrait and the intoxicating evening which we spent yesterday have left my senses in turmoil.

Sweet incomparable Josephine, what a strange effect you have on my heart!

Are you angry?

Do I see you looking sad? Are you worried? ...

My soul aches with sorrow, and there can be no rest for your lover; but is there still more in store for me when, yielding to the profound feelings which overwhelm me, I draw from your lips, from your heart a love which consumes me with fire? Ah! it was last night that I fully realized how false an image of you your portrait gives!

You are leaving at noon; I shall see you in three hours.

Until then, mio dolce amor, a thousand kisses; but give me none in return, for they set my blood on fire.

Rainer Maria Rilke

May 14, 1904, Rome

To love is good, too: love being difficult.

For one human being to love another: that is perhaps the most difficult of all our tasks, the ultimate, the last test and proof, the work for which all other work is but preparation.

For this reason young people, who are beginners in everything, cannot yet know love: they have to learn it.

With their whole being, with all their forces, gathered close about their lonely, timid, upward-beating heart, they must learn to love.

But learning-time is always a long, secluded time, and so loving, for a long while ahead and far on into life, is--solitude, intensified and deepened loneness for him who loves.

Love is at first not anything that means merging, giving over, and uniting with another (for what would a union be of something unclarified and unfinished, still subordinate--?), it is a high inducement to the individual to ripen, to become something in himself for another's sake, it is a great exacting claim upon him, something that chooses him out and calls him to vast things.

A Love Letter By Robert Burns 1790's

Dear Madam,

The passion of love has need to be productive of much delight; as where it takes thorough possession of the man, it almost unfits him for anything else.

The lover who is certain of an equal return of affection, is surely the happiest of men; but he who is a prey to the horrors of anxiety and dreaded disappointment, is a being whose situation is by no means enviable.

Of this, my present experience gives me much proof.

To me, amusement seems impertinent, and business intrusion, while you alone engross every faculty of my mind.

May I request you to drop me a line, to inform me when I may wait upon you?

For pity's sake, do; and let me have it soon.

In the meantime allow me, in all the artless sincerity of truth, to assure you that I truly am,

my dearest Madam,

your ardent lover, and devoted humble servant.

There are some more love problems to discuss.

Can there be love on the first sight?

What do you think of jealousy: does it kill love, or on the contrary, causes its development?

Recently we've got the interpreters' contest. You are welcome to listen to the best translations.

By Robert Burns

O my Love's like a red, red rose,

That newly sprung in June;

O my Love's like a melody

That sweetly played in tune. -

As fair are you, my bonie lass,

So deep in love am I;

And I will love you still my Dear,

Till all the seas gang dry. -

Till all the seas gang dry, my Dear,

And the rocks melt with the sun;

I will love you still, my Dear,

While the sands of life shall run. -

And fair you weel, my only Love!

And fair you weel, a while!

And I will come again, my Love,

Though it were ten thousand mile!

By Blanche DeGood Lofton

If I could do what'er I want to do,

To make complete your gladsome Christmas Day,

I would not bring a single thing to you,

But I would come and take some things away:

I'd take away your trouble from your heart;

Each pain and sorrow I would have relieved;

And every word that caused a single smart,

And every hour through which you sadly grieved.

I'd have them all be gone - forever gone -

Forgotten, like the things that cannot be;

And then each hour would be a joyful one,

For only good things would be left, you see.

Now that is what I'd really like to do -

If I could do the things I wish for you.

Now you are welcome to listen to a dialogue and to say what it is about.

Girl: Who is it?

Boy: Guess who.

G: You, Ted?

B: No, you are wrong.

G: George?

B: No, wrong again.

G: Who is it?

B: It's Mike.

G: Mike who?

B: What do you mean "Mike who?" Mike Connors, of course.

G: Oh, Mike, I'm sorry.

B: Yes. We were to have a date last night. Where were you? I'd been waiting for you for two hours in the rain, suffering the biting winds.

G: I'm sorry, Mike. I couldn't come.

B: Couldn't come! Why couldn't you come?

G: Well, I had to wash my hair.

B: Wash your hair! I've got the flu!...Wash your hair! Why didn't you phone me?

G: I wanted to phone you, but I couldn't remember your number.

B: But it's in the telephone directory.

G: Yes, I know, but I couldn't remember your surname.

B: Oh! But why did you have to wash your hair last night?

G: Well, I had to do it last night because I was going to the opera last night.

B: The opera? Who with?

G: G...George. George Johnson. My old friend.

B: I see... How did you like the opera?

G: I didn't go.

B: Oh! Where were you then?

G: At the restaurant.

B: What?!

G: At the restaurant... with Ted Butler, the son of my boss. He asked me yesterday. I didn't really want to go, but I couldn't say no...

Yes, you are right. This dialogue is about dating. Do you know what is different in the dating customs of the English-speaking countries and our country? What do these expressions about dating customs mean?

You are welcome to see the drama about dating, to say what type of dating it is about and to give a headline to it.

(Jenny and Pam are in Jenny's room)

P: (coming into Jenny's room) Hi, Jenny! You wanted to see me? What's up? What can I do for you?

J: Oh, Pam! Glad to see you! It's so nice that you've come. You see, I've got a problem and need your help.

P: What is it? And where are you going? J: I'm going out with a boy called Thomas. It's our first date. But a week ago I arranged to meet another boy called Stephen, my pen pal who is coming to our city today to see me. So, could you help me sort this out?

P: No, I just can't do it.

J: Of course you can. It won't be difficult. Have a look at his photo...

P: Not bad... Hm... But he could have been better.

J: Just walk up to him and tell him...

P: That you can't make it, that you are ill or something. Yes I know. I'll say that you are so sorry.

You don't look very sorry, though.

J: (laughing) Well, it's not my fault, is it? How was I to know that Thomas was going to ask me out

on the very day that I'd arranged to meet Stephen?

P: Well, what am I going to do with him? Suppose he gets mad or something?

J: Don't be silly! (laughing again) He's just a pen pal. I've only been writing to him for a couple of months.

P: Oh, all right. Off you go and have a great time. I'll do my best.

J: Pam, you're an angel! See you later then.

(Pam and a boy are in a cafe)

P: (to the audience, coming into a cafe) A really handsome young man. In life he is much better than on the picture. (Addressing the boy) Err... Are you Stephen - Jenny's friend?

B: Err... yeah... That's right.

P: I'm afraid she's sent me to tell you that she can't make it. She's not well.

B: Oh, no!

P: She said she'd get in touch with you as soon as she could.

B: I see.

P: She was really looking forward to it.

B: Oh, well... that's life!

P: I'm glad you've taken it like that.

B: You and I… have got a lot in common. Twin souls, you might say.

P: Do you really think so?

B: Sure! And to celebrate our meeting, I'm going to invite you to the cinema. There's a horror film on at the Odeon.

P: How do you know what's on here? Jenny said you lived a hundred miles away.

B: Who?

P: Jenny. The girl you were supposed to meet here.

B: Never heard of her!

P: Why?

B: When a pretty girl sits opposite you and starts chatting, you just go along with it. By the way, my name's Chris. Do you mind?

P: No, I don't mind. Not at all.

В: And your name is…?

P: Pam.

B: Shall we go?

P: OK.

A BLIND DATE.
