In Scotland that is in the north of Britain the national instrument is the bagpipe which is the most exciting to the Scots though some people outside Britain think it is tuneless. But for centuries, up to the first world war, Scottish pipers encouraged their soldiers by playing music at battles. Here is Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. The Edinburgh festival is an annual festival of music and drama, it is held every summer.
London is famous for its opera houses and concert halls where famous musicians conduct the best symphony orchestras. In London Henry Purcell, a great British composer, lived. His opera Dido and Aeneas is considered to be the first British classical opera. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s rock operas or musicals are staged all over the world; they are always played to full houses. The first nights of his famous rock operas often take place in London theatres where every seat is usually taken.
The promenade concerts are probably the most famous ones. They were first held in 1840 and later were directed by sir Henry Wood, who wanted to listen to classical and modern music. They still continue today in the royal Albert Hall. They take place every night for about 3 months in the summer, and the programmes include new and contemporary works as well as classics.
Usually there is a short winter season lasting for about a fortnight. The audience may either listen to the music from a seat or walk or stand during the performance. Concerts are rarely given out-of-doors today except for concerts by brass bands and military bands who play in the parks and at seaside resorts during summer.
