All English people celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December.

Bradley Pitt.

William Bradley Pitt was born on 18th December, 1963, in Shawnee, Oklahoma (USA). He had a happy childhood and school life, and he went to the University of Missouri to study journalism and advertising. At university he started acting and in 1987 he left before he took his degree. He went to Hollywood.
          Life in Hollywood wasn’t easy. At first he couldn’t find any acting jobs, but by 1989 he started getting small TV and film roles. Then nine years ago, in 1991, he got his first main role as a DJ in the film Thelma and Louise. He was on screen for only 14 minutes but a lot of people noticed him and he started to get bigger roles in films, such as Louise in Interview with the Vampire.

          Brad Pitt is now one of Hollywood’s most successful actors. His name almost certainly means a film is going to make a lot of money, but at the moment, he is interested in making more serious films, such as Seven years in Tibet.

The Earth is 4,600 million years old. Modern man has lived on the Earth for only 35,000years but, in that time, we have changed our planet in many ways. Many of things we have done are good, but many, many more are not good for the Earth.

Pollution is damage to the air, sea, rivers or land caused by chemicals, waste and harmful gases. The biggest polluter today is the car. Exhaust fumes are the main cause of bad air quality, which can make people feel ill and have difficulty breathing.

The greenhouse effect is caused by harmful gases known as greenhouse gases. This is known as global warming. Global warming may result in the melting of the ice at the Poles and rising sea levels, leading to serious flooding and other disasters in many parts of the world. In other places the temperature will rise and there will be less rain, turning more of the land into desert.

Acid rain is a rain harmful to the environment because it contains acid from factory smoke. Acid rains cause damage to trees, rivers and buildings.

Deforestation is the term used to describe the disappearance of forests from large parts of the world’s surface.

Many people try to protect the environment by joining environmental groups that inform people about ecological problems and try to persuade governments to take more care of the environment, especially by organizing protests.

The continent of Africa is one of the most warlike continents – there’s always a war or several wars there. Angolan people, for instance, don’t seem to remember what living in peace is like. They’ve never experienced peaceful life for long. From the 16^th century up to 1975 Angola belonged to Portugal and was its overseas territory. The fight for freedom never stopped but when independence was gained at last, an intense civil war broke out.

The main opposing forces were UNITA, which stands for National Union for the Total independence of Angola a MPLA – The People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola. These two political parties were originally founded to free the nation from Portuguese colonial rule. However, after independence was declared, their military confrontation subjected Angolan people to further suffering.    Charles Darwin.

Darwin had not planned to be a scientist. He wanted to become a doctor. But he was interested in plants and animals.

A friend who knew about Darwin's interest in nature invited him to take the trip. Charles was 22 when he left England for a five-year trip around the world.

This trip is a very important one in the history of science, for it led Darwin to write one of the worlds most famous books. The book is "The Origin of Species".

It gives Darwin's ideas of how all the plants and animals of today have come from the very simple plants and animals that first lived on the Earth. Darwin was seasick for much of the voyage, but he came back with the notes for his great book.

He visited the Galapagos Islands, Australia, New Zealand. There he saw many strange plants and animals.
