Teacher: Today we are going to
speak about one of the greatest English poets William Shakespeare. It is
impossible to speak about the English literature without speaking about this
author. He was the man who had the largest and most comprehensive soul. People
all over the world can’t help admiring his great talent.
William
Shakespeare… The brilliant poet, the marvelous dramatist, the greatest of the
great. He was not of an age, but for all time.
How much do we know about the life of this great man?
Pupil 1: Although the name of William Shakespeare is well-known in
the world, we know very
little about his life. He was born on April 23rd,
1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. His mother,
Marry Arden, was a daughter of a farmer. His father John
Shakespeare was a glove-maker
who had an office in Stratford-upon-Avon.
Pupil 2: Little is known about William’s childhood. He got his
education at the Grammar school.
He got married in 1582 to Anne Hathaway who was 9 years older than himself, and had three children, Susannah, the eldest, and then
twins- a son Hamnet, and another girl, Judith.
Pupil 3: It`s known that in 1567 Shakespeare went to
London to find a job, where he began writing plays staged at the Globe Theatre.
By 1592 he had been an important member of a well-known acting company, and in a few years he became a well-known
author.
Pupil 4: William lived in Stratford until he was twenty-one, when
he went to London. We don’t
know exactly why he did it. Some people say that the reason
was his love of poetry and theatre.
There is a story that Shakespeare’s first work in London
was holding rich men’s horses at the theatre door. But nobody can say whether
this story is true.
Pupil 5: Shakespeare’s work as an actor (although he usually acted
only small parts) helped
him greatly in writing of his plays. He knew the
stage and that helped him to write the most wonderful plays ever written.

Pupil 6: In 1613 Shakespeare stopped writing and went to live in
Stratford where he died in 1616. Shakespeare was buried in the chancel of the Holy Trinity Church two days after his death.
A monument was built to him in Stratford and in the
Poets’ Corner in Westminster Abby.

Teacher: William Shakespeare was not only a great playwright; he
was a great poet too. If you read
the biography of Shakespeare well I think you have learnt
something about his sonnets.
Will you share this information with us.
Pupil 7: Published in 1609, the Sonnets were the last of Shakespeare's non-dramatic works to
be printed. Scholars are not certain when each of the 154 sonnets was composed,
but evidence suggests that Shakespeare wrote sonnets throughout his career for
a private readership.
Teacher: Now let us listen to one of his sonnets. It is sonnet 130.
My
mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral
is far more red than her lips’ red;
If
snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If
hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I
have seen roses damask’d, red and white,
But
no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And
in some perfumes is there more delight
Than
in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I
love to hear her speak, yet will I know
That
music hath a far more pleasing sound;
I
grant that I never saw a goddess go;
My
mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground.
And
yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
As any she belied
with false compare.
And now I would like you to listen to the translation of
this sonnet. It was made by one
of the most talented translators of the poems in the world
by Samuel Marshak.
Recite the translation of the sonnet, please.
Pupil 8: 7
назвать;
Teacher: And now, at the end of the lesson, I would like you to see video film about W.
Shakespeare “The greatest show on the Earth.”
Teacher: Dear friends, thank you for the lesson. You have learnt a
lot of things about Shakespeare’s family, about his native town, about his
place and his plays and sonnets. You have seen the film “The greatest show on the Earth”. I think it was very interesting and you will remember
our lesson for a long time. Shakespeare was a great poet. He was “for all
time”.
The lesson is
over.
Good-bye.
