Unit: Is it easy to share a room? (textbook “Enjoy English”)

Topic of the lesson: An ideal roommate.

Group characteristics: 13 students, 9^th form, mixed ability;

level: intermediate; the 5^th year of studying English.

Aim of the lesson: by the end of the lesson the students will be able explain their choice of the ideal roommate for each character using the vocabulary of the text and structures. A and В should be put in one room because…

They can become very close friends.

They will enjoy each other’s company.

They will get on well.

They have something in common

Equipment: blackboard, tape recorder

Vocabulary and structures: should/ shouldn’t, have something in common, different interests, enjoy each other’s company, styles of living, have nothing against.

Listen to the tape again. Look at the blackboard and match the names of the people with their occupations.

Listen to the people more attentively and fill in the table.

Imagine that these six people want to stay at the hotel. You have to put them into the rooms. But there are only three vacant rooms. Say which of them could be the ideal roommates. Give your reasons, use the vocabulary of the text and the structures: A and В should be put in one room because…

Achievement: all of the students could identify the main idea of the text.

Failure: 2 students made mistakes.

Achievement: the students identified the age of the people without mistakes.

Failure: 7 students missed some information.

Achievement: 7 students did it without mistakes.

Failure: 6 students made some pronunciation mistakes.

Achievement: the students found the same and different interests of the people easily.

Failure: 3 students made some grammar mistakes (have/has).

Failure: 5 students couldn’t explain their choice. 5 students made some pronunciation mistakes.

Achievement: 8 students used our active vocabulary in their explanations.
