T.: Good morning, everybody!
Today we are having a special lesson. It is an excursion to the past, to the
history of Russia. At the very beginning of the lesson I want you to have a
look at the screen and guess what we are going to speak about. (slide 1)
Did
you know
that…
In 1871 Prince Alfred, a son of the
British Queen Victoria, married Maria Alexandrovna Romanova, a daughter of
Alexander II? (slide
2 ) In
1884 Princess Elizabeth (Elizaveta Feodorovna), a granddaughter of Queen
Victoria, became a wife of Great Prince Sergey Alexandrovich Romanov, a son of
Alexander II? (slide 3 )
In 1894 Princess Alix (Alexandra Feodorovna), a granddaughter of
Queen Victoria, a sister of Elizaveta Feodorovna, married Tsarevich Nickolay
Alexandrovich Romanov (Nickolay II), a son of Alexander III? (slide
4)
The Russian Tsar Nickolay II and the British King George V were cousins? (
slide 5 )
In 1902 Prince Nicholas, a son of George I of Greece and Olga Konstantinovna
Romanova, married Great Princess Elena Vladimirovna Romanova, a granddaughter
of Alexander II? ( slide
6 ) In
1947 Queen Elizabeth II, a great-great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria, married
Duke of Edinburgh Philip Mountbatten, a nephew of Elena Vladimirovna Romanova?
So, what are we going to
speak about at today’s lesson? Yes, you are quite right, we are going to learn
some interesting facts about the blood relationship of two royal dynasties: the
Romanovs, whose reigning began with Tsar Michail
Feodorovich in 1613 and ended with the last Russian Emperor Nickolay II in
1917, and
the Windsors, whose ruling started with Queen
Victoria in 1837 and is still going on because Queen Elizabeth II belongs to
this royal house. These
two dynasties have been related since the 19th century. Of
course, it’s impossible to discuss all the facts concerning their relations,
that’s why we will mainly speak about the family of the last Russian Emperor
Nickolas II and Alexandra Fedorovna, a
granddaughter of Queen Victoria (slide 7)
2. Работа с текстом.
T: You have texts
on your desks. Task
1 Read text 1 and be ready to answer my questions
Princess Alix, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria and the
future Empress Alexandra Fedorovna, visited Russia for the first time in 1884
when her sister Elizabeth got married to Great Prince
Sergey Alexandrovich Romanov, a son of Alexander II.
At the wedding ceremony she saw tsarevich Nicholay and they felt sympathy to
each other. Her second visit to Russia took place in 1889 when she came to see
her sister. Mild flirtation of two young people grew into a stronger feeling.
But speaking about their marriage was out of the question. She was only 17 and
Great Prince Nikolay was 21. Though they wrote to each other (Alix’s sister Elizabeth
helped them), and sent small presents to each other, they had to part for
nearly five
years.
Coming back to England Alix
began learning Russian and reading Russian literature. What’s more, she started
visiting and talking with the priest of the Russian Orthodox Church in London.
Queen Victoria, who noticed Alix’s
feelings to Prince Nicholay, was eager to help her. She wrote a letter to Great
Princess Elizaveta Feodorovna. She asked her to find out the intentions of the
Russian Emperor house and if it was necessary to subject Alix to confirmation
according to the rules of the Anglican Church, because members of a tsar’s
family in Russia had the right to marry only women of orthodox religion. Four
years passed and ill fate united the young
people. In
1893 Emperor Alexander III fell seriously ill. The question of succession to
the throne was raised and the Emperor wanted his son Nickolay to get married.
Nickolay was firm in his intentions to marry Princess Alix. Thanks to Great
Prince Michail Nickolaevich Romanov, the Emperor agreed to his son’s marriage
with the Princess. Empress Maria Feodorovna could hardly hide her
dissatisfaction.
The engagement took place in Coburg in
April, 1894. The Princess arrived in Moscow in autumn not long before the
Emperor’s death. She had been sent for as a future member of the tsar’s family
to be present at his funeral. Alexander
III died in October, 20. He ruled the country for only 13 years, but he gained
the reputation of “a firm hand”. Nicholay Alexandrovich took the power
unwillingly but with a firm belief in monarchy and his own responsibility as a
successor. On
November, 14, 1894 the marriage of Princess Alix and Emperor Nickolay II was
held.
The coronation of the Emperor and the Empress took place on May, 14, 1896.

T: Now answer my
questions: (pupils give their answers)
1) What was
the aim of Princess Alix’s first visit to Russia?
2) Why
couldn’t they get married when they met in 1889?
3) Who
supported Alix in her intention to become a wife of tsarevich Nickolay?
4) Who was
strongly against their marriage?
5) When and
where did their engagement take place?
3. Аудирование
T: Look at the screen, please. This is a family of
Emperor Nickolas II and Alexandra Fedorovna. (slide 8)
Task 2 Listen to the text about the children of the royal family. Match the
descriptions of the children to their names
Alexandra
Fedorovna and Nickolay Alexandrovich were ideal parents and brought up five
modest and decent children: four daughters and a son. All the girls were very
good-looking and hard-working. No doubt, Queen Victoria’s upbringing influenced
this fact. During the war they worked as sisters of charity, took care of the
wounded and even helped when they were operated on. (slide 9 Olga)
Olga
was tall with big blue laughing eyes. She had a slender figure and danced
beautifully. According to her teachers' opinion she had an absolute ear for
music. Everybody said she inherited her brilliant abilities and striking memory
from her father. She liked to be alone, wrote poems and read a lot. Her
favorite writers were Chekhov, Turgenev and Leskov. She was very generous and
helpful. She worshiped her father. (slide 10 Tatiana)
Tatiana was taller than her mother, but so thin and slender that her height
didn’t spoil the impression. She had regular facial features. Dark-haired, with
a pale face and big light-hazel eyes she resembled the tsar’s relatives. She
was sincere but a bit stubborn. It was Tatiana who took care of the younger.
She didn’t have such a strong character as Olga, but always took decisions
quicker than her sister and never lost her head. Both princesses loved
children. They often invited kids to the palace and presented different things
and clothes to them. (slide 11 Maria)
Maria was lovely with a wonderful smile and dark blue eyes. Kindness was the
main feature of hers. She always knew what she wanted and why. She had a gift
for painting. (slide 12 Anastasia)
Anastasia was very attractive. With cunning
eyes, infectious laughter and dark joined eyebrows, she had no resemblance to
her sisters. She was quick-witted and had a good sense of humor. Anastasia was
the only child among her sisters who didn’t know what shyness was. (slide 13
Alexei)
On
August 12, 1904 their son Alexei was born. The child was strong and healthy
with thick golden hair and big blue eyes, and only a few months later his
parents began to notice the first symptoms of hemophilia. The carriers of this
illness are usually women and their sons inherit it. The Empress inherited this
genetic defect from her grandmother Queen Victoria and she passed it to her
son. It was a terrible blow for the family. Nickolay Alexandrovich and his wife
hoped for the best but it was clear for everyone that Alexei could die before
the succession.

All of you know about the tragic death of the family of Emperor Nickolas II and
Alexandra Fedorovna. But probably not all of you know that all the members of
the family were canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad and by the
Russian Orthodox Church. Have a look at the screen (slide 17). This icon depicts the Romanov
family as passion bearers of the Russian Orthodox Church. And now I want you
to look through the second text on your desks. You have to give the correct form
of the highlighted words.
