TIME explained what was perhaps the most controversial of its choices thus: "Hitler became in 1938 the greatest threatening force that the democratic, freedom-loving world faces today" (1/2/39). Hitler's rise began in 1919, when he joined the German Workers Party, which was renamed the Nazi party. Within two years he was the party's leader. In 1933, Hitler became chancellor of Germany and soon consolidated his power, banning other parties and establishing totalitarian rule. He put the unemployed to work in public programs, rebuilt the army and sent Jews, communists and others to concentration camps. On September 1, 1939, Hitler began World War II by invading Poland. By 1941, German troops had become bogged down in Russia, and in 1944 the Allies began their advance on Germany. Hitler lived his final months in a Berlin bunker, committing suicide on April 29, 1945. John F. Kennedy was president for only 1,000 days, from his 1961 inauguration to his assassination in Dallas, Texas, on November 22, 1963. In naming JFK 1961's Man of the Year (1/5/62), TIME wrote, "In his first year as President, John Fitzgerald Kennedy showed qualities that have made him a promising leader ... Those same qualities, if developed further, may make him a great President." In 1960, Kennedy narrowly defeated Richard Nixon to become the 35th — and first Roman Catholic — president of the U.S. He led the U.S. through several international crises, including the Bay of Pigs and the Cuban Missile Crisis, and he increased the American military commitment to South Vietnam. Domestically, he endorsed major civil rights legislation at the urging of his brother Robert, the attorney general of the U.S., and he signed executive orders ending segregation in federal housing and mandating affirmative action in government agencies. Lindbergh was TIME's first Man of the Year, for making the first solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean on May 20-21, 1927. For that 33 1/2-hour flight, Lindbergh was honored with awards, medals and parades throughout the world. But this intensely private man was never quite comfortable with the idolization thrust upon him, and did not conform to the image of hero the public sought. Perhaps there was a hint of this in TIME's list of his characteristics: "Modesty, taciturnity, diffidence (women make him blush), singleness of purpose, courage, occasional curtness, phlegm." Although he found great happiness with his wife, Anne Spencer Morrow, whom he married in 1929, tragedy brought on by fame shattered their lives when their infant son, the first of their six children, was kidnapped and murdered in 1932. In his final years, Lindbergh developed a great interest in environmental causes. "If I had to choose," he said, "I would rather have birds than airplanes." On the death of Lenin in 1924, Joseph Stalin took control of the Soviet Union , instituting policies of nationalization and agricultural collectivization that fomented civil war and famine as well as cultivating a cult of personality. TIME described this public worship: "Joseph Stalin has gone a long way toward deifying himself while alive. No flattery is too transparent, no compliment too broad for him. He became the fountain of all Socialist wisdom" (1/1/40). Stalin established a reign of terror that included mass arrests, executions and deportations. He also rallied his troops to beat back a German invasion in some of the bloodiest fighting of World War II. At his death on March 1, 1953, there was a mass outpouring of grief; at a 1956 Party Congress, successor Nikita Khrushchev denounced him as a murderer. Martin Luther King Jr. was the personification of the civil rights movement. Seeking to transform his anger against a segregated and hateful world, he found a weapon in Gandhi's teachings of nonviolent resistance. In 1962, as fire hoses and police dogs were unleashed on peaceful marchers in Birmingham, Alabama, in full view of television cameras, the Civil Rights movement acquired multiracial momentum. King's subsequent arrest led to the publication of his "Letter from Birmingham Jail," an eloquent treatise on nonviolence credited with pressuring the federal government to sponsor an historic civil rights bill. In 1963, at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial, King delivered his famous "I Have A Dream" speech to a throng of thousands. He won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. The British, as weary and discouraged as the rest of the world in 1952, saw in their new young Queen a reminder of a great past ... and dared to hope that she might be an omen of a great future." Pope John Paul II was born Karol Jozef Wojtyla in Wadowice, Poland. When elected by the Catholic Church in 1978, he became the first non-Italian pope in 455 years. Studying for the priesthood in an underground seminary in occupied Poland, he was ordained in 1946 and received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the Pontifical Angelicum University in Rome. This pope has modernized the papacy and internationally spread his reach in massive gatherings of Catholics and frequent consultations with heads of state. Despite his modern role, his rule has not been without controversy. His declaration that women may not serve as priests and his attempt to apologize for historic prejudices and injustices by the Catholic Church received virulent criticism. In naming him its Man of the Year for 1994, TIME said, "His power rests in the word, not the sword ... He is an army of one, and his empire is both as ethereal and as ubiquitous as the soul." In naming him Man of the Year for 1987, TIME observed that by 1982 Gorbachev was already well positioned for the national leadership role he took over in 1985: "While still in charge of farming, he gathered Soviet academic experts for a series of seminars held sometimes in the Central Committee offices, sometimes in a dacha outside Moscow. The sessions started with problems of agriculture but quickly developed into freewheeling discussions of what was wrong with the economy in general and how it might be fixed ...
