Introduction
Canberra is the capital city of the Commonwealth of
Australia. It is the country’s largest inland city.
Canberra is very different from most Australian
capital cities. It is a very unusual, geometrically precise and carefully
thought out city, as it was built specifically to meet the capital’s function.
The aims of the project
are to get students acquainted with the capital city of Australia and encourage
them to discover the fascinating world of sightseeing of the «upside – down»
country.
This work will be also interesting to children and
adults because it combines amazing stories, interesting and scientific facts
from the history of Canberra.
Thus visitors may be slightly under-awed
by Canberra, but don’t just turn around. Explore the sites and you will realize
that Canberra is a far more pleasant place than it is usually given credit for.

Part
I. Introducing Canberra – the capital city of the
Commonwealth
of Australia
1.1. The geographical peculiarities
Despite the fact that Canberra is located almost
in the centre of Australia, it is surrounded by beautiful scenery and colorful
nature.
Canberra is built in the style of a garden city
with large tracts of natural, undisturbed vegetation that eventually led to the
emergence of a playful nickname « bush capital» (page 9).
1.2. Some interesting historical
facts
It is believed that
the name "Canberra" comes from the language of one of the local
tribes – Gabri as a variation of the word "kambera" or
"chamberí" ("meeting place"). Long before the European
expansion of the modern city was inhabited by aboriginal tribes. Archaeological
excavations indicate that Canberra was inhabited already 21 thousand years ago.
In 1901, when it
was decided to build a national capital, two cities – Melbourne and Sydney
rivaled. To settle this argument a new capital Canberra was built roughly
between the two states – New South Wales where Sydney is and the state Victoria
where Melbourne is.
Previous capital of
Australia was Melbourne. And the government moved to Canberra in 1927.
1.3. People in Canberra and their
lifestyle
Nowadays, the
population of Canberra is more than 332.000 people.
A lot of people
in Canberra are practically born in the water as most of the country is a huge
beach. As soon as they learn to walk, they glue themselves to surfboards or
jump into kayaks and boats and spend hours or even days in the water. When they
get older, they need more of a challenge. So they dive into the Great Barrier
Reef and swim together with crocodiles, huge sharks and giant sea snakes. Some
people prefer to risk their life in the rainforests which, are not
4
populated just by koalas.
In the Australian woods you can come across by far the most dangerous snakes
and spiders in the world. Whatever you can think of: parachute jumping, cycling
on mountain bikes, walking in the outback – Australians have their own
extreme way of doing it all.
Every Olympic Games
the whole world admires Australian athletes.

Part II. The amazing world of sightseeing
in
Canberra
Canberra
is a very Australian city with amazing places of interest and bright sun. In
this city you can always dive into the world of museums, theaters, festivals
and galleries, or choose among thousands of fantastic restaurants and bars
which are open round the clock.
Canberra is world
famous for its architecture.
2.1. Australian War
Memorial
It
is Australia’s national memorial to the members of its armed forces and
supporting organizations who have died or participated in wars involving
the Commonwealth of Australia. The memorial includes an
extensive national military museum (page 10).
2.2. National Carillon.
No trip to the
capital of Australia is complete without a visit to the National Carillon. It
is an architectural landmark of Canberra. It was a gift from the British
government to the people of Australia to commemorate the 50th anniversary of
the National Capital. The national Carillon has 55 bells, each bell weighs
between seven kilograms and six tones (page 11).
2.3. Questacon
"The
Questacon" was opened in1988 at Ansile Primary School. It was the first
interactive science centre in Australia. It was developed by Professor Mike
Gore, a physics lecturer from the Australian National University. Questacon's
current building was Japan’s gift to Australia.
The centre involves
both children and adults into scientific research. Everything here is based on
experiments and games (page 11).
2.4. National
Dinosaur Museum
6
It is Australia’s largest permanent display of
prehistoric specimens located in Gold Greek Village. The gift shop stocks a
range of natural history books, dinosaur replicas, toys, crystals, minerals and
meteorites (page 10).
2.5. Commonwealth Park
This park has got many
small ponds and water features, walking trails, bike paths and sculptures. The
annual spring Floriade festival is held in the park. It includes Regata
Point and has a view of the National Gallery.
Its area is 34.25
hectares ( page 12).

Conclusion
They say,
« Every bird likes its own nest» and the same may be said about people. But a
man differs from a bird because he can enjoy not only the beauty of his native
place but also the beauty of different countries and places of interest.
For many
other world capitals Canberra is a remote city to visit, nevertheless, millions
of people gladly fly there to see its places of interest.
See, enjoy
and explore this fascinating city!
