Introduction

Dancing is the poetry of foot.

John Dryden

Hobbies become a necessary part of life for a lot of people. They makes people’s lives more fun and are a means of self-expression, helping us which most people consider useful. Hobbies can be connected with gardening, house decorating, making clothes, keeping bees, cooking and others.

As for my hobby I like dancing very much. I have danced as long as I remember myself. I think it is a good way of expressing yourself. When I dance step I show my feelings, my emotions. I share my energy to all people because step is a dance of soul for me.

In the past people danced to tell myths and to show feelings for one of the opposite gender. Dance plays a vital role in many of the world's religions. People have used dance in praise of their gods, in celebration of the seasons, and simply as an outward expression of joy or grief. Native Americans could not imagine their lives without dancing. It was an essential part of their culture and heritage. Native Americans danced for almost any reason: for worship, for rain, when preparing to fight with other tribes or when preparing for a big hunt.

The purpose of my work is to make a methodical book showing how to learn step easily.

The issues are:

  1. To choose the topic of the project

  2. To find out some interesting facts about step

  3. To translate this information in English

  4. To make a presentation

  5. To find the group for my project

  6. To teach my classmates some very simple moves

  7. To find music for our dance

  8. To rehearse with my classmates

  9. To make a video of our dance

  10. To introduce classmates with step

  11. To bring attention to the English language

  12. To prepare the methodical book of the steps

While dancing people try to express their ideas or to tell a story through their movements and facial expressions. Dance fills our body with energy and makes us feel happier. Dancing is a wonderful way to exercise while having fun. Besides, it has a lot of health benefits. It increases your muscle tone, lowers blood pressure, relieves stress and releases endorphins (a chemical that reduces pain and can make you feel happier). It helps us burn calories and lose weight. But of course some people dance simply for the sake of dancing.

2. Theoretical part

2.1. The history of step dancing

Step dancing can be traced back to the very beginning of the African American experience and was a rich part of early American culture. Step dancing has developed and is still alive today. Step dancing is a dance where the movement of the feet takes precedence over any other element of the dance. Arms are generally left hanging at the sides of the body, though they are also used for percussion, and the dancers are unencumbered by intricate formations or patterns. The dance is highly intricate and percussive, with the movement existing as both music and dance. Understanding the development of step dance is integral to understanding American dance history. [pic. 1]

Beginning

Early slaves were discouraged from communicating in their native languages and from continuing their native customs. Slave owners believed that allowing slaves to continue their cultures would hinder the owners' ability to control and manage the slaves. As a result, slaves developed their own culture, and step dance was a part of that culture. During slavery, step dance was a method of communication and was used to communicate important messages and news regarding the underground railroad.[pic.2]

World War II

During World War II, many African American soldiers incorporated step dancing into their routines. This provided entertainment and uplifted the men during the hard times of battle. World War II transformed the dance from a practical communication method to an entertaining dance. This was an important transition for step dancing.[pic. 3]

Transition from Communication to Entertainment

As the need for covert communication disappeared, step dance took on a new life a source of entertainment. The rhythms of Motown and hip hop were incorporated, and the dances became more athletic and intricate. As the dances became more complicated, they became a larger part of the dance culture. 2.2. My Idol

Artistic Director Derek Grant works around the world in different dance shows, being both an outstanding dancer and choreographer. During his 27 years in the steppe Derik Grant received many prestigious awards and was repeatedly marked by the press as a brilliant dancer and choreographer.

The New York Times said of his speeches the following "Grant has a great sense of rhythm, combined with amazing speed."

As Derek was asked:

- Why and when did you decide to dance? Why did you choose step?

- I can say that I literally grew up in a dance school, studying all the dance trends. But I chose step by myself.

-By what criteria do you select dancers for your projects?

- There are a lot of great tap-dancers in America, and in every project I try to invite the best of them. I collect my favorites who I will introduce the Russian audience with very soon. I admire each of them separately and I am a big fan of each dancer’s creativity.

I told you about my idol very briefly. This is a man who is really strong in his profession. All his life he devoted to dancing.

I want to be like him, to reach the heights that I will try very hard. I hope in the future there will be written in newspapers about me too. [pic.6]

  1. Practical part

We were making the project step by step. We have got 5 stages.

Part one.

The first step was preparative. We have found the information about step. Just in order to understand the information we have written it and after that tried to translate. We used such dictionaries as Multitran and Yandex dictionary.

Part two.

The second step was searching. At first we were thinking about what to do. What kind of job we should do. And we decided it would be great to ask classmates to help us. Two of my classmates agreed.

Part three.

The third step was analytical. I explained my classmates what should we do and how it was important to me. After that we started rehearsals with them. They showed all their attentiveness and I was very proud that they were succeed in this dance because I knew it was difficult.

Fourth part.

The fourth step was the preparation to the performance. We were doing this dance for a long time. We started in October 2017 and made it till the end just only in February 2018. It was difficult but succeeded.

Fifth part.

The fifth and the last step was the writing of the methodical book in which I explained how to do some simple moves. And I tried to explain everything to my classmates as much easier as I can. I was shocked when they could do it because this dance was very difficult especially if you don’t know how to do it.

At the end I think we succeeded. We made the dance and I prepared the methodical book.

    1. My awards

When I was 4 years old I saw the girls who were dancing step. After the concert I decided that I want dancing like this. My mom took me to the teacher and she told us that we should wait for a year because I was too young. When I was 5 I went to the school of step and started dancing. During the studying I became the champion of Russian Federation and Europe. The championship of Europe was my first championship. [pic.7,8]

So step became the part of my life and I have a dream to take part in the world’s championship. I think my dream will come true one day.

When I was suggested to make a project about step I agreed immediately. Because I wanted try myself in something new. [pic.9]

Me and my teacher of English decided to prepare the dancing with two my classmates whom I should teach how to dance. First of all, I wanted to add that they didn’t know step at all but they didn’t have any problems in learning. At the end of the learning we prepared the dance and showed it on the conference.

We decided to make the methodical textbook which we called “The skillfulness of little steps”.

Conclusion

Step dancing continues to influence other dance styles and is likely to continue influencing the development of American dance. Step dancing is supported by the National Panhellenic Council, which is a group of nine historically black collegiate organizations. This organization helps to keep step dancing alive and growing at the nation's colleges and works to preserve and develop step dancing in the United States.

And of course it develops in Russia too.

Our project was made to prepare a methodical book. During the writing this book we used the knowledge of everything I know. I have asked my tutor for help just in case if I couldn’t do something. I have written the simplest and the most famous moves in the methodical book. And I hope it will help people to study this information in order to learn this dance.
