I
Children introduce themselves.
T.: Let’s start our debate club. As I know, you are representing two different countries. Where are you from?
St.: We are from the Russian Federation.
T.: And, where are you from?
St.: We are from the USA.
T.: You can see the flags of your countries on the blackboard. I think you’ve already guessed what we are going to speak about.
St.: I think we are going to discuss different questions about our two countries. (weather, geography, history).
T.: Yes, you are right. We are here to discuss and share our opinions on different questions. We are going to speak about endangered or even extinct animals, about school and social life of teenagers. Could you introduce yourselves, please.
Hi! My name is Jane and these are my friends. As you know, there are ten regions and fifty states in the USA. We are from the Southwest region of the USA. There are four states in the Southwest: Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma. We’re from the city of Ostin which is in the state of Texas.
Hi! My name is Meg. My friends and I are from the Rocky Mountains region of the USA. There are five states in the Rocky Mountains: Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado. We are from the city Billings which is in the state of Montana. I’m interested in history and I want to add that 13 colonies made the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and became the United States after the War of Independence.
Hi! My name is Mike and these are my friends. We are from the Pacific West region of the USA. There are four states in the Pacific West: Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada. I’m from the city Los Angeles which is in the state of California. This part of our country is washed by the Pacific Ocean and in the east it is washed by the Atlantic Ocean.
Hello! My name is Nikita and these are my friends. We are from Moscow the capital of our country. It has the status of a Russian federal city. More than 12 mln. people live in Moscow. Russia is a vast country, there are 85 federal subjects.
Hi! Our names are Nick, Kate and Ann. We are interested in history. We are from Veliky Novgorod. It’s one of the oldest Russian cities. In 1019 Yaroslav the Wise granted Novgorod independence from Kiev. Novgorod is the birthplace of the Russian democratic tradition.
Let me add some more information. In 1136-1478 Novgorod was the capital Novgorod Feudal Republic ruled by the Veche. Veche was a people’s assembly which made decisions on war and peace, passed the laws and concluded treaties with other territories.
Hi! My name is Timur and these are my friends. We are from Elista, the capital of Kalmykia. Our republic is situated in the southwest of the Russian Federation. In my opinion it’s one of the best places in the world. I like our national traditions, colorful dances and beautiful songs.
T.: You can ask each other some questions:
Rus.: What is the population of your country?
Am.: The population of our country is 311,856,455 people.
Am.: How many regions are there in your country?
Rus.: There are 85 federal subjects in our country.
Rus.: How long did the American Civil War last?
Am.: It lasted four years.
T.: The first question we are going to discuss is the problem of endangered animals. Let’s start.
St.: I want to tell about a bird called the passenger pigeon, or wild pigeon,- it lived in North America a century ago. It was a beautiful, swift and graceful bird. … … The passenger pigeon became extinct.
St.: What are the reasons?
St.: It happened for many reasons. The main reason one is the change in the pigeons’ natural habitat, in the environment. These birds needed large forests, but farmers needed land, so they cut down forests. … … … There were not enough birds for species to survive. The passenger pigeon is only one of the many plants and animals that once lived on our planet and have become extinct.
St.: Extinction has been going on since life began on our planet. But today extinction is happening faster than ever before. I want to tell you about saiga. In 1970s we could see these beautiful animals in our steppe. There were more than seven hundred thousands of them. About 50 years have passed there are few of them left, we can see them only in reserve. They are endangered. Saiga is listed in the Red Book.
They were shot because they were good to eat and for their horns. It was hunted extensively.
II
T. I believe that everybody feels concerned about the extinction of species and wonder what can be done to stop it.
S.: If people’s actions destroy any habitat, they should create more habitat elsewhere.
S.: Animals die in polluted areas. Way out? – More bicycles and fewer cars, more recycled products-the animals and plants will only benefit from it.
S.: We must protect endangered species. Create or join a group whose goals are to protect endangered species.
S.: Conservation activities can be of various kinds. One of them is following the rules when visiting national parks or woods and forests. … … … Don’t turn our parks and river banks into landfills.
S. Don’t buy endangered species.
S.: Water pollution can also affect wildlife. The Nashville crayfish is endangered mainly because the creek where it lives has been polluted by people living nearby.
(to hang the poster “Save our planet”)
Relaxing: Hands up, hands down, hands up, hands down. Jump, clap your hands, sit down. It’s great.
III
T.: I know you speak about endangered animals at your extracurricular activities, which widen your knowledge, I guess.
That’s why I want you to discuss school activities. What opportunities do they give you?
S’s answers:
it is a place for personality development
gain confidence and competence
give students opportunities to develop skills
develop them as individuals
carry out experiments
organizes trips, hold events, find out what is new in history
give us the opportunity to show our talents of singing, dancing and acting
IV
I see, American and Russian children need school activities to develop as individuals. And you are not different in many other ways, for example in earning and spending money.
S’s answers:
St.: I do paper rounds. This is how I do it.
V
Students are given papers with the text. They read and discuss a story about ghost.
T: And I prepared this story for you. Listen to Jasmine’s ghost story and answer the questions, please. Open your books on page 70 ex.4.
Students answer the questions.
T: Now open your books on p.53 ex.4. Let’s write a short version of Jasmine’s ghost story and for The RAP.
VI Reflection, summing up.
T: What opportunity does this lesson give you?
St.:
It gives us opportunity to develop our speaking skills.
