Philadelphia is the oldest city in the USA
Insert the missing word into
the text
(culture, history, Mexican, New
York, historical customs, foundation)
The USA is a country with a
rich___. This state is inhabited by immigrants from different countries, who
have brought their national features to architecture, ___and cultural customs.
The huge state is famous for megacities no less large in area and population. A
trip to the largest cities in America will take a lot of time, but you can
choose one and go to see its sights, get acquainted with cultural and ___. Most
of the oldest cities in the USA are located on the east coast – it was here
that ships with migrants from Europe arrived, the first ports were built here.
Philadelphia was founded in 1701, and it is the oldest city in America. For the
first century after its ____, Philadelphia was the economic, political and
cultural center of the United States. At one time, this city was even
considered the capital of the States, before the advent of Washington. At the
beginning of the XIX century, ______surpassed Philadelphia in importance and
population. Nevertheless, this city still remains important, today it ranks 5th
in the country in terms of population. It is clear why cities in the western
part of the United States have later founding dates: it took a lot of time for
Europeans to move inland and develop desert territories. In 1829, a trading
caravan traveling from Texas to Los Angeles lost its way. Under the sultry rays
of the sun, people set up camp, volunteers went to look for water. Among them
was the_______ Rafael Rivera, who managed to find a life-saving oasis with
artesian water in the middle of the desert. This area was called "Las
Vegas", which means "fertile valleys" in Spanish. In 1905, the
city of Las Vegas was founded here. For a long time it served as a major
railway junction, a place of refueling and parking of trains traveling from the
west coast to the east coast and back. The fate of the tiny town changed
dramatically in 1931, when gambling was officially allowed on the territory of
Nevada (in other states they were outlawed).
