Some useful tips for teaching ESL to children
While working with young learners, I found out how important are games, fairy tales and interactive moments for them. Frequent changing of activities can help you to reach greater results than just drilling. So here are some tips for teaching ESL to children:
1. Involve children in hands-on activities. As children’s minds are open they learn by absorbing ideas and grammar concepts directly. It’s very important for the children to be actively involved in the process of learning. Get children up and out of their chairs and let them move around. Sing songs, play games and perform skits with them.
2 . Avoid talking for long periods of time. I find that energy level
drops lower and lower the longer I explain the rules. Explain the activity
quickly and start doing it. Keep the energy moving! If something you’ve
planned doesn’t work out, move on. Always have an extra activity handy
for this purpose. Little children need lots of stimulation all the time.
3. Children learn by interacting with the teacher and each other. Whenever possible, have children working in groups and pairs.
4. Review, Review and Review! New information is absorbed and has meaning for the pupils only if it is related to the information they’ve already learned. At the beginning of each new lesson quickly review what they learned at the previous lesson.
5. Encourage pupils to correct themselves and other children. Self correction is a very important part of learning. Your little pupils should be encouraged to ask, “How am I doing?” or “Am I doing it right?” Use some stickers or little prizes to mark the answers and written works.
6. Use what is learned in different contexts and structures. The more contexts are used the better, and the more concrete and ‘real life’ the structures are the better. Make it real for your students by talking about them and their lives.
7 Use the structures that are natural for children’s cultural environment such as songs, games, fairy-tales, etc to provide easy approaches to studying. Children feel comfortable when the learning comes in natural ways.
8. Praise, Praise and Praise. Encourage and built students up, especially little ones! The best results occurs when students are motivated and feel good about themselves.
