-Good morning, dear students
and dear guests! I’m glad to see all of you today! Our lesson is a bit
unusual but I hope that it will be useful for all of us!
-Well, students , how are you
today? You are smiling. What makes you happy? Are you a bit nervous?
-Don’t be
so shy! Be active! Let’s get started.
-I believe you want to know
the topic we are going to discuss. For this reason I want you to divide into
3 groups and count off by fours. Now I’ll show you some pictures and your
group should decide what these pictures have in common, what the main topic
is.
-But the problem is that each
student will see only one picture.(Student №1 –picture №1 and so on ). All
the rest close your eyes! One by one. You have two minutes to complete the
task.
-Well, what are your ideas?
-You are
right ! The main idea is that in each picture people help somebody. Look at the
screen! There are some phrases. I want
you to use them and make up a complex sentence.
- a person helps animals
-a person helps
other people
-a person helps
willingly
-a person does something
without being forced or paid to do it
-Well-done! Tis person is a volunteer. Does a
person do this activity willingly? Does a person get any money? Remember the
key words and let’s read them one more time.

-So, when we discuss
the topic volunteering, you should understand the main points. Now let’s see what work can be voluntary. You’ve already
seen some examples and in ex.1 p. 90 find the useful vocabulary. Read only
those points that haven’t been mentioned . Now make up sentences to describe
the pictures using these phrases. I wonder , students, whether you have ever
volunteered?
- I see that you
are active and involved in this activity. It’s nice of you really.
But some people
are not ready to spend their time or money on volunteering.
We have a text
with a nice title, read it, please. Look at the given pictures and try to
guess what this text is about. Do you think this person had a positive or
negative experience of volunteering?
You are going to read the text and find
out. While reading the text, what should you pay attention to? What is important?

Appendix 2
TASK 1 (Student 1)
“I started working at the animal shelter after school a year ago.
Some people came to my school to give a talk about ways teens can help out in
the community. I liked the idea of getting involved with something worthwhile,
and as I’ve always loved animals the shelter seemed the natural choice for me.
Basically, I help out for a couple of hours about twice a week,
more in the holidays. Sometimes I help the staff members feed and clean and
exercise the animals. Other times, I answer phone calls or help members of the
public to choose a pet. Last year during the summer holidays, I also spoke to
some groups of children about looking after pets properly and the importance of
showing kindness to animals. I especially enjoyed that!
When most people think of animal shelters, they think of cats and
dogs. Well, there are plenty of both at our shelter, but there are sometimes
farm animals there, too, such as horses, sheep, goats, chickens, ducks and
once, even a llama who we named Jack! Most of the animals are either brought to
the shelter by their owners because they can no longer take care of them, or
they are removed from their homes because they are not being looked after
properly.
TASK 1 (Student 2)
Once I went with a member of staff to rescue a pony from a farm
where it had been extremely neglected. I found it hard not to burst into tears
when I first saw the pony, but I was pleased to report that he made a full
recovery at the shelter.
Some of the animals need more care than usual, so a foster home is
found for them. I have taken home two little kittens before, as well as an
injured guinea pig and a puppy that had been found abandoned in a rubbish bin.
Sometimes my mum jokes that our house is more like a zoo than a home!
Summer is the busiest time for shelters, with many people simply
abandoning their pets when they go on holiday. So why not ask to volunteer at
your local shelter this summer? Or you could do something else, such as going
to a charity event, or volunteering to visit a senior citizen for a few hours a
week. I’ve learnt a lot about myself and others through volunteering and I’ve
met a lot of interesting people, too!”

TASK 2
Electronic assistant: Hello!
It's the electronic assistant of a vet clinic "Happy Pets". We kindly
ask you to take part in our survey. We need to find out how teenagers
feel about pets and animals. Please answer six questions. The survey is
anonymous - you don't have to give your name. So,
let's get started.
1. What
is your favourite animal? Why do you like it?
2. What
pets are the most popular in Russia in your view?
3. Is it
right for people to keep exotic animals as pets? Why?
4. What
can people do to help homeless animals?
5. Why do
you think most children like visiting zoos?
6. Does a
career of a vet attract you or not? Why?
