Acupuncture
Acupuncture is one of the
oldest healing techniques in the world. It has been practiced in Asian
countries for thousands of years and it is one of the main components of
traditional Chinese medicine. Acupuncture involves putting extremely thin
metallic needles into the skin at certain sites. These needles are then moved
around be hand, heated or connected to a battery. The aim is to return health
and relieve pain.
In traditional Chinese
medicine, a healthy body is one in which the forces of yin and yang are
balanced. Yin is whatever is cold and slow and yang is whatever is hot and
excited. Disease occurs when there is an imbalance in the forces of yin and
yang, which causes energy flow (called “qi”) within the body to become blocked.
Acupuncture works by unblocking qi, and hence returning yin and yang to
balance.
When visiting an
acupuncturist for the first time, be prepared to answer several health
questions. The specialist will also ask you about your behavior and lifestyle.
This is necessary for them to determine your treatment needs. In general,
people do not feel any pain when acupuncture needles are inserted into your
body. In fact, during acupuncture sessions many people report feeling either
relaxed or full of energy.
For the most part,
acupuncture is an incredibly safe medical procedure. Very few complications have
been reported. Those that have, have been the result of practioners using
defective needles or placing them incorrectly in the patient’s body. Thus, it
is important to seek treatment from qualified and experienced acupuncturists
only.
For many years now,
scientists in the West have been studying the usefulness of acupuncture and
trying to understand how it works. Their studies have not yet found the
mechanism behind acupuncture’s apparent effectiveness, but they have indicated
that acupuncture can be useful in treating a wide variety of health problems.
Every year, thousands of people benefit from using acupuncture to help them
stop smoking, relieve stress, lose weight and much more.

Answer
the questions.
Water
pollution
Water pollution
occurs mostly, when people overload the water environment such as streams,
lakes, underground water, bays or seas with wastes or substances harmful to living
beings.
Water is necessary
for life. All organism contain it, some drink it and some live in it. Plants
and animals require water that is moderately pure, and they cannot survive, if
water contains toxic chemicals or harmful microorganisms. Water pollution kills
large quantity of fish, birds, and other animals, in some cases killing
everything in an affected area.
Pollution makes
streams, lakes, and coastal waters unpleasant to swim in or to have a rest.
Fish and shellfish harvested from polluted waters may be unsafe to eat. People
who polluted water can become ill, if they drink polluted water for a long
time, it may develop cancer or hurt their future children.
The major water
pollutants are chemical, biological, and physical materials that lessen the
water quality. Pollutants can be separated into several different classes:
The first class is
petroleum products: oil, fuel, lubrication, plastics. The petroleum products
get into water by accidential spills from ships, tanker trucks and when there
are leaks from underground storage tanks. Many petroleum products are poisonous
for animals. Spilled oil damages the feathers of birds and the fur of animals,
often it causes death.
The second class
is pesticides and herbicides. There are chemicals used to kill harmful animals
and plants. If they penetrate into streams, rivers, lakes, these chemicals can
be very dangerous. The chemicals can remain dangerous for a long time. When an
animal eats a plant that’s been treated with it, the poisons are absorbed into
the tissues and organs of the animals.
When other animals
feed on a contaminated animal, the chemicals are passed up to them. As it goes
up through the food chain, the chemical becomes more harmful, so animals at the
top of the food chains may suffer cancers, reproductive problems, and death.
Nitrates can cause a lethal form of anemia in infants.
The third class
are heavy metals, such as, mercury, selenium, uranium, radium, cesium, etc.
They get into the water from industries, automobile exhausts, mines, and
natural soil. Heavy metals also become more harmful as they follow the food
chain. They accumulate in living being’s cells and when they reach high levels
of concentration in the organism, they can be extremely poisonous, or can
result in long-term health problems. They can sometimes cause liver and kidney
damage.
The fourth class
is fertilizers and other nutrients used to promote plant growth on farms and in
gardens.
The fifth class is
infectious organisms and pathogens. They enter water through sewage, storm
drains, runoff from farms, etc.
The last one is
thermal pollution. Water is often taken from rivers, lakes or seas to be used
in factories and power plants. The water is usually returned to the source
warmer than when it was taken. Even a small temperature change in a body of
water can drive away the fish and other species that were originally there, and
attract other species in place of them. It breaks a balance and can cause serious
circumstances in future.

1.
When
does water pollution occur?
2.
Why
do plants and animals require pure water?
3.
What
are the major water pollutants?
4.
How
can pollutants be separated?

mirrors have always been associated with something magical. For example, no one
wants to accidentally break the mirror – according to legend it will lead to
the seven years of misery or, according to other sources, to the seven
disasters. If you happen to forget something at home, and you had to get back
for it, be sure to look in the mirror before going out, or better yet, show out
your tongue to yourself – that was you’ll avoid possible troubles and problems.
Another popular
hero of superstitions and signs – salt. For example, spilling salt – this is to
a quarrel. If someone has prepared salty food, then he (or she) is in love.
Russian are always
very afraid of putting the ‘evil eye’, i.e. to bring misfortune in words or
actions. For example, when someone pronounces aloud any undesirable event
developments, then in order to avoid this others say him: “Knock on wood” and
“Spit”. In the last case, it is understood that the person will spit three
times over his left shoulder. Thus we avert a disaster.
Also a lot of
signs are associated with the dishes. It is believed that it’s good fortune to
break dishes by chance. And if you drop a spoon or fork on the floor – expect a
woman to visit you, if it’s a knife – a man.
Are you going to a
trip? First, do not plan leaving on Friday – the journey will not be
successful. Put everything in order in the apartment beforehead, and just
before the leaving you should have a sit. “Let’s sit before the road” –
Russians say, and everyone sit down – one on the sofa, and others on the bags.
Being quiet for a while, suddenly someone remembers that he had forgotten
something important. It’s a useful custom, is it not?

NEWSPAPERS
In the past people
learnt about news from newspapers. Nowadays people usually learn what is
happening in the country and in the world from TV or radio news programmes or
from the Internet.
Still we cannot
imagine our life without newspapers. There are dozens of them on every
news-stand. There are newspapers for professionals, for businessmen, for
children and teenagers, for men and women, for sports fans, for those who are
interested in gardening and for those who keep pets.
Some newspapers
publish serious articles on politics, economy and finance, some aim to
entertain their readers. Many newspapers express certain political opinion and
people choose them according to their own political beliefs. In short, you can
always find a paper which suits your interests.
Besides, there are
many free local newspapers which are put into your postbox whether you ask for
it or not. Probably they are not interesting, because they consist mainly of
advertisements, but you can find a lot of useful telephone numbers and
addresses there.
My parents subscribe
to The St Petersburg Times. I also like this weekly. I don’t read all the
articles? But in every issue I find something interesting. I think that most
articles are very well written, they give a detailed and well-balanced analysis
of current events and trends in economy. I like to read articles on social
issues, interviews, reviews of new books, plays and TV shows. One of my
favourite columns is The Quotation of the Day, where they quote our popular
politicians and give their comments. Sometimes it’s very funny.
Quite often I buy Top
Secret and practically in each issue there are some fascinating stories which
you read like a detective story. Sometimes they uncover things I have not heard
about, sometimes they show well-known events in a completely new light.
From time to time I
read Metro. It’s one of the most popular daily papers, but I don’t consider it
serious. However, I never miss an article written by Minkin. I think he is a
very good journalist. I also like Merinov’s cartoons. Sometimes they publish
good reviews of new films, new CDs and so on.
In short, I think
that TV, radio and the Internet have their advantages, but nothing can
substitute newspapers.

The Alps are one of the great mountain ranges of Europe. They are located in
south-central Europe and stretch for almost 1,200 kilometres. As routes of
trade and invasion, alpine passes are full of history. In 218 BC, the famous
Carthaginian military commander Hannibal is believed to have crossed the Alps
with 38,000 infantry, 8, 000 cavalry and 37 war elephants in order to invade
Italy!

entanglement or ingestion of plastics.

asleep at night and difficulty waking in the morning, westward travel is
associated with tiredness in the early evening and pre-dawn awakening.
