Some people like to “go to work on an egg”. But many more breakfast on cereal or cornflakes while others have toast with butter and marmalade.
A typical breakfast in a hotel includes bacon and eggs, sausage, mushrooms, baked beans and tea and toast. When porridge or fruit juice are offered as well, the meal is sometimes advertised as a “full English breakfast”.
At weekends people have more traditional, cooked breakfast.

The word “sandwich” comes from a man called John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich who lived in the 18th century in the English town of Sandwich. He liked to play games at the table for a long time without stopping for a meal and so his cook put some beef between two pieces of bread – and made the first sandwich.
Nowadays sandwiches are very popular in Britain. They are even brought in supermarkets. They are easy to take to school or work.
For lunch which begins at about 1 o`clock the English prefer sandwiches with different fillings.

Afternoon tea is a small meal, not a drink. Now not everybody has time for afternoon tea at home, but in the past it was a tradition. It become popular about 150 years ago, when rich ladies invited their friends to their houses for an afternoon cup of tea.
Afternoon tea is a pot of tea and a light snack ( small sandwiches, scones, cakes).
Tea is a national drink in Britain.

English Dinner
A traditional British dinner is meat and two vegetables. The most popular meats are chicken, beef, pork and lamb. Vegetables, grown in Britain, like potatoes, carrots, peas, cabbage and onions, are very popular.
Three traditional British meals are: bangers (sausages), baked beans and mash, stew (meat cooked with lots of vegetables) and the Sunday roast (a big piece of meat roasted in the oven for about two hours with potatoes).
The dinner in Britain is at 6 – 8 p.m.

A meal is not a full meal without some kind of desserts. A dessert usually consists of fruit and berries, or ice-cream, or puddings. One of the most British desserts is the sherry trifle usually made in a big glass bowl. On the bottom is some fruit, then some cake with sherry, then some red jelly, then yellow custard, and finally nuts on top. And one of the most popular summer desserts is fresh strawberries with thick cream.

Potatoes are one of the most important, or staple, foods in the British diet.
A favourite snack in Britain is the baked potato, or “potato in its jacket”, which is cooked with the skin left on it. These are cut open and eaten with something on top like butter, cheese or beans.
