The Great Barrier Reef
2 слайд
Location
The world's largest coral reef, which is located in the Pacific Ocean. The range has more than 2,900 individual coral reefs and 900 islands in the Coral Sea. The Great Barrier Reef stretches along the north-east coast of Australia for 2,500 km and covers an area of about 344,400 square kilometers. The Great Barrier Reef is the largest natural object on Earth formed by living organisms - it can be seen from space.

The ecosystem of the Great Barrier reef
It is almost impossible to describe the richness of the underwater world that can be found on the Great Barrier Reef!
The species diversity is amazing! More than 1,500 species of fish, 4,000 shellfish, and more than 200 species of birds have found their home in the marine park…
The reef community of animals includes coelenterates (polyps, jellyfish), many species of mollusks (gastropods, bivalves, cephalopods, etc.), sea turtles, snakes, worms, echinoderms (sea urchins, stars, snaketails), bottom and free-swimming fish, as well as marine mammals (dolphins, dugongs).

History
the great barrier reef has attracted people since ancient times. about 10,000 years ago, australian aborigines and torres strait islanders settled on the coral islands.
5 слайд
The whale shark
The famous whale shark also lives here! It is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest fish on the planet. But you should not be afraid of it:The "sea monster" feeds exclusively on plankton. Dolphins and killer whales are constantly hunting near the reef. Their victims are often the young of humpback whales and minke whales. It is near the Great Barrier Reef that humpback whales breed from June to August. On the islands of the reef, located in the southern part, sea turtles lay their eggs, which are currently threatened with extinction.

Other inhabitants of the reef
All marine life-huge octopuses, squid, lobsters, lobsters, also live on the territory of the Great Barrier Reef. And recently, there have been truly huge populations of the crown of thorns starfish.
In addition to marine life, coral islands are home to more than 200 species of birds.

Reef problems
The inhabitants of the Reef are an integral part of the ecosystem, so if the population of one species of creatures sharply decreases or increases – the reef will be in serious danger. This situation was in the 70s-80s of the last century, repeated today, when the number of sea stars “Crown of Thorns”has sharply increased.the great barrier reef has lost more than half of the coral polyps that make up its structure since 1985.
Another major problem was the massive bleaching of corals due to the dramatic warming of the water. The algae that live in the corals themselves die, and the symbiosis is disrupted. Corals displace dead algae, which, in fact, give them such a bright and attractive color.

Entry in the UNESCO list
To preserve this unique natural attraction, a National Park with an area of more than 5,000,000 hectares was created in 1979. The main goal of the park's employees is to protect the animal and plant world. The park is on the UNESCO list.

Tourism
More than 2,000,000 tourists visit the Reef and its islands every year. This place is especially attractive for scuba divers. You can dive in any season, but the most favorable time is March-June. Both beginners and experienced divers will feel comfortable here. Diving is the main type of tourism in the Great Reef area.
