  Biography of Catherine the Great
  Catherine II, also known as Catherine the Great, born Princess Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst, was Empress of Russia from 1762 until 1796, the country's longest-ruling female leader. Under her reign, Russia grew larger and stronger, and was recognized as one of the great powers of Europe.
  Catherine 2 was born on may 2, 1729 in Stettin, Kingdom of Prussia. She received her education from a French governess and from tutors. Although Catherine was born a princess, her family had very little money.
