    a) Sport and People
    b) Popular Sports
    c) Sport and Health
Sport is one of the most popular pastimes all over the world. Though a lot of people don’t go in for sport themselves, they watch sports programmes on television, support their teams at stadiums. But many people, young and old, do different kinds of sport. Some sports are common, others are not. It is difficult to find a person who has not heard about figure skating, long or high jump, water skiing, weightlifting, such team games as basketball, hockey or water polo or such athletics as running and jumping. At the same time there are sports and games that are less common, for example motor racing, rock climbing and parachute jumping are not to everyone’s taste. Going in for sport gives you a lot of advantages. It gives you physical exercise, you spend a lot of time in the open air, you meet people who enjoy the same sport. Just think of the excitement of the moment when your favourite footballer scores a goal at the last moment of the match.

    4) The speaker lived in Florida for 15 years.
    5) The speaker likes skating even more now that he lives in Canada.

I love many sports, but my favourite sport has always been skating. I first skated when I was eight. We lived in Norway then. I will always remember the skating rink not far from our house where my father used to take me to skate. He gave me my first lessons of skating and helped me and showed what I should do on the ice and how to do it. He also taught me to hide my pain when I fell down onto the ice and it hurt to skate.
Three years later our family moved to Florida and then for many years I could not skate because we lived in a hot climate.
Now I am thirty and live in Canada. I have been skating since I came here. And now it is even better than it used to be. There is a modern stadium near my office and I regularly go there usually after work. I can’t say I’m one of the world’s greatest skaters but I skate well.

    Ancient Olympics
Probably the greatest honour that can come to an athlete is to win gold at the Olympic Games. But did you know that the idea of having Olympic Games is more than 2,500 years old?
A Greek legend says that it was Hercules, son of Zeus, who started Olympic Games. The earliest Olympic records we know about go back to the year 776 BC. The Greeks had the Games once in every four years for more than 1,000 years, until the Romans stopped them in 394 AD.
The ancient Greeks believed the Games so important that they measured time by them. They called the four years an Olympiad. The Games were an example of the Greek idea that people should develop their bodies as well as brains. Nothing was serious enough to stand in the way of the Games. If a war was going on in the country, they stopped the war, not the Games.
The ancient Olympics had only one athletic competition — a running race of about 183 metres (the length of the stadium). Only men could take part in the Games. The powerful Spartans changed the programme and included more sports in it. The winners of the Games became heroes in the country.

How old is the idea of having Olympic Games?
    More than 2,500 years old.
    2) Where did the first Olympic Games take place?
    In Ancient Greece.
    3) How often did the Greeks have them?
    Every four years.
4)Who stopped the Games in 394 AD?
    The Romans did.
5)What was as important for the Greeks as to develop (their) brains?
    To develop their bodies
    6) What was the only competition that the Greeks had?
    It was a running race.
    7) Did women take part in the Games?
    No, they didn’t.
    8) Who became the heroes in the country?
    The winners did.

    a) A lot of people in Russia enjoy watching and playing ice hockey. We often think and say that it’s our national sport though in fact ice hockey was born in Montreal, Canada in 1877. That was the year when Canadian students at McGill University made the first seven rules for the game. Two years later, in 1879 the first organized team, the McGill University Hockey Club, was formed. Very soon the sport became popular all over Canada. By 1893 there were almost a hundred teams in Montreal alone.
    b) By the beginning of the 20th century the game of ice hockey quickly spread to Great Britain and other European countries. In 1917 they founded the National Hockey League (NHL). Nowadays ice hockey is an Olympic sport and the most popular team sport played on ice.
    c) Hockey is also the world’s fastest game. Players often skate 48 km an hour. They get tired very quickly. Often hockey players leave a game and other players come in. In hockey players use hockey sticks and a pluck. The colder it is, the better the pluck slides on the ice. That’s why players often put the pluck in the freezer before a game. In some games players use more than 30 plucks. The pluck moves faster than the players. Hockey players are heavy and plucks are not. Sometimes plucks go at 160 km an hour. As you see, hockey looks easy to play but it isn’t.
    d) Hockey is a dangerous game. Today, players wear special clothes to protect their bodies. Goalkeepers wear special masks to protect their faces. A goalkeeper without a mask can break his nose or teeth. In the past there were many players without their front teeth.
    e) People play hockey not only on ice fields. For example, there is street hockey for which you don’t need any ice. This type of hockey was also born in Canada and is now popular in many countries because you can play it all year and in lots of places: car parks, school yards, empty streets. You wear tennis shoes, not ice skates. And you can use a ball or a pluck. But the tactics and the rules are the same. Street hockey is especially popular with young people.

Some sailors do not need water. Their “boats” have wheels and they can race them on land. This sport has the name of land sailing, or land yachting, and it has fans all over the world.
In the past land sailing was a means of transportation. Some experts say that it dates back to the ancient Egyptians. In the 1960s and 1970s it was an “underground” sport which they practised mostly in Australia and New Zealand. Now it is becoming more and more popular with people of all ages.
Land sailors who call themselves “pilots” can sail at up to four times the speed of the wind. This means that they can go at 90 km an hour.
Land sailing works best in windy, flat areas — on beaches, fields, and lake beds that have dried up. But the new generation of land sailors have moved to the cities and can now be seen in parks and parking lots.
Land yachts have three wheels and pedals. There are a number of types or classes of land yacht. The largest is the class 2, which can have an 8-metre mast. The class 3, probably the most popular yacht design, is much smaller. The class 5 is still smaller and has a different shape.
A new generation of land-sailing yachts are small, light and not very expensive. One can quickly take them apart for easy transport. They can fit into the back of a car or on a car’s roof rack. And you do not need to be strong to sail it.
One of the most popular microyachts, the Sirocco, appeared in Chicago. “We don’t have big open spaces in the Chicago area,” says the land sail designer Dan Feldman. “Our goal from the start was to produce a land yacht that we could use in rather small places.”
Many sailors, however, prefer to build their own land yachts — from bicycle parts, wood, and other materials.
Land sailing is less dangerous than other extreme sports but land sailors prefer to play safe: they wear helmets, goggles and gloves. Land yachting is also a truly green sport, with no noise or pollution.

    Sports in Britain
There are not so many British athletes who are successful in world sports competitions. But Britain has been good at inventing sports and writing (1) the rules of games
People started playing golf in Scotland in the fifteenth century. Cricket is only a little younger. They first played it in England in the sixteenth century. Such games as football, rugby and hockey appeared in British public schools1 in the nineteenth century.
British most popular sport is football. During the football season (2) (August to May) professional footballers play a lot of matches at home and (3) abroad’. About 20 million people go to football matches every year. The most interesting games are often between teams from the same city, for example Manchester United and Manchester City. The most important game of the football season is the Cup Final in London. (4) eighty thousand fans come to Wembley Stadium to support their teams.
Cricket is popular in England but not so much as in Scotland or in Wales. They play it (5) in summer.
Rugby is a kind of football in which players take the ball in their hands and run with it. They say that rugby takes its name from Rugby School in England. In 1823, a boy who (6) was playing football at the school took the ball and ran with it. That was the beginning of a new game.
