  Geography
  
  Australia is the only country in the world that is also a continent. It is the sixth large country and the smallestcontinent. Australia lies between the South Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean. It has an area of about 8 million square kilometres.

  The Flag
  The flag includes the Southern Cross, Union Flag and Commonwealth Star.
  The small Union Jack represents the historical link with Britain, the large seven-pointed star represents the six States and Territories, and the small stars from the Southern Cross – a prominent feature of the southern hemisphere night sky.

  Government
  Australia uses a parliamentary system of government, it is a constitutional monarchy, ruled by Queen Elizabeth II. But the queen has little power in the Australian government. She serves mainly as a symbol of long historical tie between Great Britain and Australia. Australia is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations which is an association formed by Britain and some of its former colonies.

  The Commonwealth of Australia is a federal state. It has got six states: New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania. Each state has its own state constitution, which divides the state's government into the same divisions of legislature, executive, and judiciary as the federal government.

  The capital of the country is Canberra. The city became the capital in 1927. Canberra was specially planned as a capital. It is a quiet city. All the government buildings are situated there. The population of Canberra is about 300,000 people.
