Los Angeles became the world capital of film industry. But more than 100 years ago it was a little town with orange wood called “holly wood”.
The first studio in Hollywood was founded by Centaur Company, which wanted to shoot westerns in California. This company rented a roadside diner at Sunset Boulevard and transformed it into the studio in October 1911. This studio was called "Studio Nestor" in honor of the western branch of the company. Later the building became the film lab of Hollywood, which is now called «Hollywood Digital Laboratory». THE FIRST STUDIO

The number of the studios grew very quickly. They combined in large corporations and now the biggest film companies are MGM, Paramount, 20th Century Fox, Columbia Pictures, Warner Bros and Universal.

20th Century Fox is an US film production company. It was formed in 1935. The company made high-quality films and it is still a major studio.
Columbia Pictures is a US film production and distribution company. It was founded in 1924. It grew out of a small company founded in 1920 by Harry Corn. Columbia became a main studio by the 1940s.
Warner Bros is a US production company. It was founded in 1923 by Harry, Albert, Sam, and Jack Warner. It became one of the major Hollywood studios after releasing the first sound film, «The Jazz Singer» (1927).
Universal is a US film studio. It was founded in 1915. In the 1970s and 1980s Universal became one of the industry’s leaders with box-office hits of the producer and director Steve Spielberg such as ET («The Extra-Terrestrial» 1982) and Back to the Future (1985).
The Walt Disney Company is one of the largest financial corporations in the world of entertainment. It was founded in October 16, 1923 by the brothers Walter and Roy Disney as a small animation studio. Now it is one of the biggest Hollywood studios, owned 11-theme parks, two water parks and several broadcasting networks including the American Broadcasting Company (ABC).
