Kuzma Minin
His nickname was Sukhoruk. He was one of the "liberators of the fatherland" from the Poles in 1612. His biography is unknown. He was from Nizhny Novgorod, a man of middle-income, selling meat.

Dmitry Pozharsky
He was born in November 1578 in the family of Prince Mikhail Fedorovich Pozharsky. After the death of Godunov, Pozharsky swore allegiance to Tsarevich Dmitry. At Vasily Shuisky’s reign Pozharsky was appointed a governor. For his service, the king granted him the village of Lower Landeh with twenty villages in Suzdal County.

In the beginning of XVII century the Russian state as a result of the Polish and Swedish intervention has been put on a side of national catastrophe.
Within two years Moscow was in hands of foreigners. The real power in Moscow was possessed by Polish commanders and their accomplices from Russian boyars.

In the half-burnt and plundered capital there was an enemy garrison. Everywhere gangs of robbers ransacked. The country fell into decay. It had no central government, no army, no material means. It was threatened with the loss of state independence. This terrible time people called "hard times".

In autumn of 1611 in Nizhny Novgorod, on the initiative of the headman of zemstvo Kuzma Minin, the national detachments of militia began to form to fight against the enemies.
It was necessary to elect a military leader of the future people's army. The choice fell on one of the best commanders of the time, known for his courage and honesty - Prince Dmitry Mikhailovich Pozharsky. Kuzma Minin was in charge of all economic affairs and organization of the militia.

The Nizhny Novgorod army quickly turned into an all-Russian army.
Its goal was the liberation of Moscow and the expulsion of the interventionists from the country.

In spring of 1612 the militia moved to Yaroslavl, where it stayed for about four months, continuing preparations for a march to Moscow.
During this time, it has increased significantly and got stronger.

In July 1612, the people's squad of Minin and Pozharsky started to Moscow. There was a stubborn and bloody battle in the capital on the 24th of August. The Russians defeated the army of Hetman Khodkevich, who was going to help the Polish garrison, who occupied the Kremlin.

In October 1612, unable to withstand the famine, the besieged enemy garrison was turned over to the Kremlin. Militia of Minin and Pozharsky completely freed the capital from the enemies.

In memory of the patriotic activities of Minin and Pozharsky in 1818, a monument was erected on Red Square in Moscow.
On it is inscribed the inscription: “To Citizen Minin and Prince Pozharsky. Grateful Russia."
