Humor in English Literature
2 слайд
Sense of humor is an individual characteristics of a person. However national humor has definite peculiarities. English humor has its specific features. And it is considered as a natural feature on the whole.
3 слайд
They say English people used to laugh at themselves and the whole world with great irony. English people are proud of their humor and they think it is the best in the world.
4 слайд
The bright feature of English humor is a word play.
Another feature is that they tell funny things with calm and very serious intonation.
5 слайд
For example:
Two friends meet and one of them says: «I've taught my dog how to speak English!" «That's impossible», — says the other man, «Dogs don't speak!"
«It's true! I'll show you». He turns to his dog, — «How's the situation in England?“ The dog answers: «Rough, rough».
Not all people can understand it.
6 слайд
There are different kinds of literary genres where English writers tell us something funny. And of course there are huge number of humorist authors, such as Tom Sharp, Jerome K. Jerome, Alan Miln, Charles Dickens, Arnold Benneth and others…
7 слайд
But one of the cutest example of English humor is a Limerick. We would like to tell you about it and give you some examples.
8 слайд
Limerick is a poetic genre of English origin.
Traditionally, Limerick consists of five lines and the final part of the first and last rows are the same.
9 слайд
The composition of a Limerick obeys strict rules:
the first line is the character and place of origin (usually geographic name is used)
the second says what this character did, what happened to him or what its feature is;
Further presentation talks about the consequences of his actions or properties.
10 слайд
It is difficult to know who the creator of the first Limerick was and why its name comes from the name of the town Limerick in Ireland.
11 слайд
However, there is an opinion that the title of the poem goes back to the custom to come up and sing comic songs at parties .
The chorus (припев) of these songs was the phrase «Are you coming to Limerick?" (Or according to another version, "going down to Limerick?").
12 слайд
The first person, who published a collection of limericks of his own composition (1846), is considered to be Edward Lear. The book is called "Nonsense" ("Book of Nonsense"). E. Lear is one of the most famous English poets.
13 слайд
Edward Lear was a famous English writer and also an artist.
Here are some of his pictures.
14 слайд
Thanks to him, in the 19th century limericks became popular. Lear wrote 212 limericks, most of which were funny and absurd. They're usually accompanied by the same absurd illustrations.
15 слайд
There was a Young Lady of Niger,
Who smiled as she rode on a tiger;
They returned from the ride
With the Lady inside,
And the smile on the face of the tiger.
Одна хохотушка-девица
Любила кататься на львице.
Признаться вам честно –
Девица исчезла,
Зато улыбается львица.
16 слайд
There was an Old Man of Peru,
Who dreamt he was eating his shoe.
He awoke in the night
in a terrible fright
and found it was perfectly true!
Однажды увидел чудак
Во сне, что он ест свой башмак
Он вмиг пробудился
И убедился,
Что это действительно так.
17 слайд
There was a funny man from Belgrade
Who dreamt to go to a masquerade,
The ball isn’t ever without risk
Dressed up as big sausages.
He was eaten by the dog at the fence.
Хотел господин из Белграда
Участником стать маскарада,
На бал не без риска
Оделся сосиской.
Был съеден он псом у ограды.
