2014 IIHF World Championship in Minsk

The 2014 IIHF World Championship was hosted by Belarus in its capital, Minsk. Sixteen national teams were competing in two venues, the Minsk-Arena and Chizhovka -Arena. It was the first time Belarus hosted the tournament. The selection of Belarus to host this competition was the subject of much debate, with some politicians in both Europe and the United States calling for the IIHF to move the tournament to another country.

The Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation announced an open mascot design competition for the 2014 IIHF World Championship. As many as 40 design proposals were submitted. The image of the bison, one of Belarus’ symbols, was named the official mascot of the IIHF World Championship in Minsk. The mascot was created by artist and designer from Minsk Vitaly Ortyukh.
A nationwide contest for the best name and story/biography for the official mascot of the 2014 IIHF World Championship was announced in March 2013.
Following the competition, which had almost 300 proposals filed, the mascot got the name Volat(the heroic warrior – in Belarusian).

In early 2008 the Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation announced a competition to decide on the best Belarusian 2014 IIHF WC bid logo. The organizing committee received more than 200 works, designer Victoria Adamovich’s laconic logo winning the competition. The 2014 IIHF WC logo is recognizable and popular. The logo was used to make souvenirs and ads of the tournament. One could also see it on the public transport, bills and billboards.
As many as 500 days prior to the competition about 40 Belarusian enterprises began manufacturing souvenirs with the 2014 IIHF WC logo. Among the most popular ones were T-shirts, caps, scarves, towels, pucks, hockey sticks (including decorative made from cut glass), badges and magnets. These souvenirs were available in shops, passenger stations and the National Airport Minsk.

Chizhovka Arena is Belarus' second biggest sports facility (after Minsk Arena). Chizhovka Arena was built for the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship that took place in Minsk in May 2014. This is not only one of the largest sports facilities in the country but is also a multipurpose complex for active leisure and entertainment.
During the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Chizhovka Arena hosted 30 matches, including two quarterfinals.

Russia remained undefeated throughout the championship and captured the gold medal by defeating Finland 5–2 in the final. Sweden captured the bronze medal with a 3–0 victory over the Czech Republic. Host team Belarus made the playoffs for the first time since 2009, losing to Sweden 3–2 in the quarterfinal. Italy and Kazakhstan were relegated to Division I A. Prior to the championship, Division I-III had played their tournaments to establish the rank between teams of lower levels.

It was a tense, hard-fought gold medal game at Minsk Arena – a true climax to the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. Only in the third period did Russia pull away.

The tournament saw a new attendance record for the World Championship, as a total of 640,044 people attended games, surpassing the record set at the 2004 tournament in the Czech Republic, which had 552,097 spectators.

At the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Minsk Team Belarus, making part of the world’s ice hockey strongest division, played the teams of Finland, Russia, the United States, Switzerland, Germany, Latvia, and Kazakhstan in Group B.
