Every country is proud of its famous people and Great Britain is among them. English people are proud of such personalities as William Shakespeare, Captain Scott, the explorer of the Antarctic, Isaak Newton, John Constable, Master of English Landscape-painting, and many others.

Sir Horatio Nelson (1758-1805)
There is hardly a person in Great Britain who doesn’t know the name of Horatio Nelson. He is a national hero. His life was not long but very interesting. As a British naval commander in the wars with Revolutionary and Napoleonie France he won a lot of victories. He was killed in the battle of Trafalgar.
Nelson taught officers to think for temsalves.

Florence Nightingale (1820-1910)
Even a nurse can be a national heroine. Florence Nightingale was a nurse in the army and she was a person to look up to. She often worked twenty-four hours a day. She was a kind and generous lady. She was so selfless! She reformed and changed the whole system of the army hospital organization and organized new nurses’ training programmes. So, she treated and saved many people after battles.

The British monarch is an enormously popular person. The Queen is a figurehead representing the country. The Queen is a symbol the people can identify with. The Queen is probably the wealthiest woman in the world, most of the money is coming from family investments rather than the state. How popular is Elizabeth II? In the late 1970s a newspaper conducted an opinion poll. People were asked whether they would vote for a president. More than 80% chose the Queen.

Martin Pyle was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in 1974 with his colleague Professor Antony Hewish for research in radioastrophysics. Martin Pyle developed highly sensitive radio telescopes that helped to produce detailed maps of the structure and distribution of radio wave sources in space.

Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in 1929 . The research by Lord Florey and Sir Ernest Chain at Oxford University lead to the discovery of penicillin’s curative properties. The work of all three men was recognized by the shared Nobel Prize in 1945.

British literature is very rich. You can always find a town, a city or a piece of country connected with a famous writer. All of us know the names of the great British writers like Shakespeare, Hardy, Burns and Sir Walter Scott. England is the birthplace of such writers as Jerome K. Jerome, the author of the popular novel “Three Men in a Boat”, the Bronte Sisters, Charles Dickens, who wrote about life in England’s work-houses in “Oliver Twist” and English schools in “Nicholas Nickleby”. His novels “Dombey and Son”, “David Copperfield”, ”Hard Times”, “Little Dorrit” and many others made him one of the most beloved of all English writers. The historic town of Stratford –upon-Avon is know as William Shakespeare’s birthplace.

William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564 in a small English town Stratford, located on the river Avon. His father was a handicraftsman and a merchant. The story of Shakespeare’s childhood and youth is full of colorful details.
At the age of 20 he left his native town for London. He began to serve in a theatre and tearned the hard life of it. He was an actor of “The Globe” theatre a wrote plays.
However, Shakespeare was not only a play write. His poems impressed his contemporaries and are popular now.
William Shakespeare is the author of 37 plays, 2 poems and 154 sonnets.

Robert Burns (1739-1796)
He is called “the Bird of Scotland”.
Robert Burns was the eldest of 7 children in the family. In his childhood he was told a lot of fantastic tales about devils, ghosts, fairies and witches by his mother. At 13 he helped his father in the fields, studied native closely and sang.
Burns began to write poetry in his 16th. Life was hard for the family.
Robert’s love to Jean Armour was immortalized in many beautiful poems, such as “I love My Jean”, “Thy Bonnie Face”.
All of Robert Burn’s poetry shows him to be one of great masters of lyrical verse, warm patriot of his native country. He had always stood for liberty, equality, justice and honestly. His poetry is deeply democratic and full of criticism directed against the landlords, the government officials.
His poems are wonderfully translated by Samuel Marshak.
Whenever we speak of Scotland, the name of Scotland’s Bard Robert Burns is always there, as the ever-living, never-dying symbol of that country.

An woman writer, among the greatest English novelists. Her books show learning, humour, and deal with morality. They give a detailed picture of many different people at all levels of English country society. Her most famouse book was Middlemarch.

English Painting.
Our life seems to be impossible without art. It really occupies an important part in our daily life. Art offers us not only pleasure and amusement but it is also a vehicle of culture and education. People like and know different types of art. Some of them are fond of painting. All of us can’t help admiring the canvases of such great painters as Tomas Gainsborough, William Hogarth, Sir Joshua Reynolds, etc.

Not until William Hogarth do we find a painter truly English. Hogarth was the printer’s uneducated but a curious observer of man and manners. His first nork dates from 1730. Among his best norles are “Captain Coram”, “ The Shrimp Girl”, serial “Mode Merriage”.
His pictures of social life brough him fame and position in the society. One of his serials “Mode Merriage” consists of 6 pictures. “The Merriage Contrant is the first.

Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792)
Sir Joshua Reynolds is one of the outstanding British portraitists who had an important influense on his contemporaries. Within a short period of time he achieved a considerable success. In 1755, at the highest point of his career he painted 120 portraits. He became the first president of the Royal Academy of Arts. In 1784 he became a principle painter of the king. He was a higly education person, wonderful colorist.

Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788)
Thomas Gainsborough succeeded brilliantly as a portrait painter. Society went to him for portraits. His manner of painting differs from Reyhols. Thomas Gainsborough’s portraits of actors and actresses and his close friends are famous. The backgrounds of his portraits are often well-observed country scenes.
His portraits are painted in clear tones in which blue and gray predominate. One of his best pictures is the famous “Blue Boy”. His other masterpiece is “The Portrait of Duchess de Befou”.

Musical life of Gr.Br. is very rich. Series of concerts are held each year in London at the Royal Albert Hall. A wide range of serious music, old and new, is performed by various orchestras, conductors and soloists. One of them is the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, a leading London orchestra.
Concerts are broadcast by the BBC and televised. Many of the audience quen for days for the privilege of taking part in them. Who hasn’t heard of such British musicans as Henry Purcel, Benjamin Britten, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Cliff Richards and of course the Beatles group.

The Beatles
The English ROCK MUSIC group The Beatles gave the 1960s its
characteristic musical flavor and had a profound influence on the course of
popular music, equaled by few performers. The guitarists John Winston
Lennon, Oct. 9, 1940; James Paul McCartney, June 18, 1942; and George
Harrison, Feb. 25, 1943; and the drummer Ringo Starr, Richard Starkey,
July 7, 1940, were all born and raised in Liverpool. Lennon and McCartney
had played together in a group called The Quarrymen. With Harrison, they
formed their own group, The Silver Beatles, in 1959, and Starr joined them
in 1962. As The Beatles, they developed a local following in Liverpool
clubs, and their first recordings, "Love Me Do" (1962) and "Please Please
Me" (1963), quickly made them Britain's top rock group. Their early music
was influenced by the American rock singers Chuck BERRY and Elvis PRESLEY,
but they infused a hackneyed musical form with freshness, vitality, and
wit.
