The Right to Spend Winter Olympic Games
In 2007 the International Committee of Sport decided to give the right to spend Winter Olympic Games to the Russian City Sochi in 2014. That event took place in Guatemala. Sochi was chosen for the great sport achievements. Among the opponents there were Austrian Salzburg and South Korean Pyeongchang.

OLYMPIC MASCOTS
A tradition to create a special mascot of the Olympic Games, bringing good
luck to athletes and fans, first appeared in 1968 in Mexico City. The new
Olympic tradition all at once fell on the soul, and thereafter every Olympic
Games had their character. It shows the geographical features, history and
culture of the host city.

A Brief History of the Olympic Games
According to historic records, the first Olympic Games were held in 776 B.C. in Olympia, Greece. By 676 B.C. the Games included Greeks from every corner of the Greek world. The Games were held every four years in honour of the king of the gods, Zeus. It is reported that there was only one event in the very earliest Olympiad : the 200- yard sprint.

Read the text and answer the following questions.
At the end of the XIX century a Frenchman called Baron Pierre de Coubertin decided to try to revive the Olympic Games. At that time, Europe was divided by wars. Coubertin thought that the Olympic Games could help to bring peace. He thought highly of sport. He described the Olympic spirit in the following words: “The important thing is not winning but taking part ”. These word are still remembered today. Coubertin believed very strongly that sportsmen must not compete for money, but for glory and for the honour of their country. In 1913, Coubertin found an emblem of five linked rings. They became a symbol of the Olympic Games. These five rings represent five parts of the world: Europe, America, Australia, Africa, Asia.

Adelina: I had very strong rivals . They were Kim Yu-na from the South Korea, who was the Vancouver Olympics winner and our Yulia Lipnitskaya, who was the best in team competition.
Adelina: Certainly. It was Elena Vodorezova and she is the only my coach. She is my ideal. She is my second mum . She is strict and kind. Elena is very smart. I love her very much.

A GREAT SUCCESS OF RUSSIA
February 23 was the closing of 22 Winter Olympic Games that will forever go down in the history of the international Olympic movement. There were played 98 sets of medals in 15 sports. Russian athletes won 33 medals, including 13 gold, 11 silver, 9 bronze. Russia became the first in the team standings. Winter Olympics in Sochi was a real triumph for Russia. We met our expectations. 7 years, we were preparing for the Olympics. Modern stadiums, arenas, hotel complexes were built during this time . Most sportsmen participating in the Olympic Games and Olympic guests appreciated the level of the Olympic Games in Sochi and found them the best.

SOCHI AFTER OLYMPICS
After the Olympics, it is planned to use the cluster area as part of Formula One street circuit. Some games of the World Football championship will be in Sochi in 2018.
