Your beasts and fish, your birds in trees,
Your sunrise in a splendid sight
Which always gives me much delight

The
Tower of London
The Tower of London from its beginning served as a
prison and a place of execution. Many prisoners lived out their lives in cold,
damp cells. Many of them laid their heads on the executionerﹸs chopping block. Among the victims there were noblemen,
politicians and two of the Henry VIIIﹸs wives-
Anne Boleyn and the Catherine Howard. By the time the first English monarch
used the Tower as a royal residence, it had become a medieval palace and
Englandﹸs strongest fortress. Two of the
features of the fortress, Traitorﹸs Gate where
all prisoners entered and Tower Green where many victims knelt before
executioner, became known to most Londoners. Queen Elizabeth I, when she was
arrested by her sister and brought to the Tower as a prisoner, passed through
Traitorﹸs Gate. So sure was she would soon
move on to tower Green that she was supposed to have said, «I have taken my
first step through Traitorﹸs Gate to heaven».
Happily, Elizabeth emerged from the Tower unharmed. A number of her opponents
when she was the Queen were less lucky: they lost their heads on her command.
Although prisoners were held in the fortress even during the second World War,
public beheading stopped in 1747.

My
Native City
To begin with, I should underline
that my friend and me live in the same city. It is Ust-Kamenogorsk.
Speaking about this beautiful city, I
canﹸt help telling you some words about its
position and history. Then. It goes without any saying, I would like to
describe you some sightseeing of our city. And at last but not less important,
I have a great desire to give you a little information about people of our city
because only people make our city modern and attractive.
As for the history of our city> I
should remind you that it goes back to the beginning of the 18th
century when in 1720 Peter-the-Great sent the expedition in our future city.
Thus, our city began with a fortress which was built on the right side of the
Irtysh River. Two centuries later it became the centre of metallurgical
industry in the East-Kazakhstan and the centre of educational, cultural and
scientific life.
Keeping to the sighseeing of our city
it is interesting to note that in our city the modern rubs shoulders with the
old, the present is ever conscious of the past, the great and the small live
side by side in mutual tolerance and respect. Ust-Kamenogorsk has buildings and
places that express all different events of its history. The Common Grave. The
Monuments to the Soldiers died during the White Guard reaction, the Monument to
the Soldiers-Internationalists where you can see the Eternal Fire, they are the
sacred of our city. All meetings and big concerts of bands on different
occasions are held in Republic Square of our city. It is decorated with a
beautiful fountain and the figures of zodiac around it. The Mosque has been
recently built there too. It is an architectural masterpiece of contemporary
architects. It is a tradition with young Kazakh couples to come there when they
have a wedding day. Republic Square is the finest and the dearest place of our
city.
But if you are interested in history
and art you have a chance to visit our museums or the only Drama Theatre which
is situated not far from the Central Square. There is no doubt that the collections
of our museums give us interesting facts about the history of our region from
old times to our days. They are situated not far from Republic Square. The
Dzhambul Theatre and Kirov Park are near there too. Classic and modern plays
are performed there with great skill and success as the actors of our theatre
try to penetrate into the inner world of their heroes and they do it well.
All sport competitions and big
concerts are shown in the Palace of Sports. It is one of the most modern
buildings of our city. The Palace of Sports is situated on the bank of the Ulba
River. It was built more than 30 years ago. If you are a great cinema-goer many
cinemas are open before you. And if a holiday or birthday is coming you have
the opportunity to visit different kinds of shop or you may drop in at the
central market which is not far from the Republic Square. There are many
restaurants, big and small cafes and you are welcome to any of them if you
prefer to spend your leisure time in this way.
I am proud of those who gave their
lives for a better life of the future generations; people of our city honor and
memory of them. They immortalize them in the names of our streets, squares and
parks. I have forgotten to tell you that two bridges which connect the Ulba and
the October districts, the right and the left sides of our city attract visitorﹸs attention.
To sum it up, I would like to add
that our city is situated in a picturesque place and I wish it were better,
cleaner, safer and we can do a lot to come our wish true. It is our must and itﹸs up to us.
