составления кратких дефиниций бытовых понятий, развитие догадки о значении
ранее не встречающихся слов по контексту, развитие логического мышления.
Организационный этап
Today you will learn to explain the meaning of some
words. In our everyday life we often have to explain things to people. And we
must also understand what others explain to us.
Этап тренировки
Read the words
aloud beginning each line with the word of the most general meaning.
- school, college, education, institute, university;
- writing, poem, novel, drama, article;
- play, performance, opera, dancing,concert;
- scientist, specialist, teacher, engineer.
When a word has a very
general meaning, you can explain it by giving examples. For instance, gymnastics,
athletics, swimming, skating are sports. Explain in this way the meaning of
some of the following words: clothers, animals, week-days, seasons,
relatives, games.

There is a very interesting communicative type of
assignment – giving definitions.
When
a word has a very concrete meaning you must first explain what class or group
it belongs to, and then you must explain its characteristics which make it
different from other things of the same group.
e. g. Supper is a meal which we have in the evening.
There
must be enough characteristics to recognise the word.
e.g.
........ is a piece of furniture to sit on. (a chair? a sofa? an arm-chair?)
To
comlete this explanation, you may say: “A soft piece of furniture with arms
for one person to sit on.” What is it? – An arm-chair.
Look
through these defenitions and say which are complete. Read them aloud. Then
complete those which are not quite clear.

keep in the shelter to have milk from.
....... is a thousand-year
period.
....... is a piece of land
surrounded by water.
....... is your mother’s
brother.
....... is a means of
transport.
....... is a piece of
equipment we have in every office.

usually put on.

1. Now,
let’s play. You are an absent-minded person who is very old and keeps
forgetting the names of very well-known things. Ask your partner what it is
called. Mind that in Russian we say: “Как
называется…?”, whereas in English we say; “What do we
call.....”. use the following phrases to start with:

Sorry, I keep forgetting
things... Sorry, the word has slipped my mind .... I’m afraid mymemory is poor
.... I’m afraid I can’t remember the word .... What do we call ....?

I suppose you mean ...., don’t
? or: It’s very simple. It is .... Let me see ....etc.
(the
biggest four-footed animal? a doctor who pull your teeth? a story in
whichanimals speak and act like people? the kind of holiday when you live in a
tent? the bird we keep to give us eggs? the bird that can be taught to speak?
the thing we use to keep all the food cold? the bag we use when travelling by
train or plain? the piece of furniture in which wekeep our clothes? the things
we put on our hands when it’s cold? the thing we use to drink tea or coffee
from ?.....?) Don’t hesitate to provide your own definition!

2. Now read the sentences with some words which,
perhaps, you do not know. Try to guess what they mean.
a)
If you smoke so much, use an ASH-TRAY, and don’t leave cigarette-ends all over
the house; b) If you can’t get up in time, buy an ALARM-CLOCK: I can’t phone
you to wake you up every morning; c) It’s the 10th of May. I’ll return
in a FORTNIGHT, so meet me onthe 24th. d) I see you are cleaning the
whole house. Is Jone coming back home? Is it true that he has got married? And
how do you like your DAUGHTER-IN-LAW?

Is
it more difficult to guess the words or to define them? Is it interesting? Is
it useful?
