What is the carbon
cycle? Read the text to find out and do the tasks below to check yourself.
javascript:;The Carbon Cycle
All
living things are made of carbon. Carbon is also a part of the ocean, air, and
even rocks. Carbon is the fourth most widespread element in the Universe.
Because the Earth is a dynamic place, carbon does not stay still. It is on the
move!
In the atmosphere, carbon is
attached to some oxygen in a gas called carbon dioxide.
Plants use carbon dioxide and
sunlight to make their own food and grow. The carbon becomes part of the plant.
Plants that die and are buried may turn into fossil fuels made of carbon like
coal and oil over millions of years. When humans burn fossil fuels, most of the
carbon quickly enters the atmosphere as carbon dioxide.
Carbon
dioxide is a greenhouse gas and traps heat in the atmosphere. Without it and
other greenhouse gases, Earth would be a frozen world. But humans have burned
so much fuel that there is about 30% more carbon dioxide in the air today than
there was about 150 years ago, and Earth is becoming a warmer place.
Which of these statements are true?
a) Many living things are made of carbon.
b) The ocean, air, and even rocks have carbon.
c) Carbon dioxide is a mixture of oxygen and carbon.
d) The amount of carbon cannot change on the Earth.
e) Burning of fossil fuels produces carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
f)
Heat in the atmosphere is not trapped by a greenhouse gas.
g) Because of human interference Earth is becoming a warmer place.

Проверка умений по работе с графической информацией.
Study
the diagram and do the tasks below.
1. Complete an
extract from a report based on the diagram:
Carbon
flows between each reservoir in an exchange called the __(a)__ cycle, which has
slow and fast components. Any _(b)____in the cycle that shifts carbon out of
one reservoir puts more carbon in the other reservoirs. Changes that put carbon
gases into the atmosphere result in _(c)____ temperatures on Earth.
2. Use the diagram to complete the table:

III. Проверка общелогических умений.
Use the
diagram and your knowledge of how ecosystems work to solve the
problem
below.
How does the level
of carbon dioxide concentrations during winters in the Northern Hemisphere
change? Tick the correct box.

2. What will
probably happen if there is no summer on the Earth? Explain your answer.
3 Which
statement best explains why carbon dioxide is important? Underline
the correct
answer.
A. It uses sunlight
to make plant food.
B. It gives
off oxygen for animals and humans to breathe.
C. It is a
part of all living things.
D. It is
important only for producing fossils.
