Settlement.
The Lake District is one of the most highly populated national parks. There are major settlements within this mountainous area - the towns of Keswick, Windermere, Ambleside and Bowness-on-Windermere being the largest four. Significant towns immediately outwith the boundary of the national park include Kendal, Cockermouth, Penrith and Grange-over-Sands; each of these have important economic links with the area. The economies of almost all are intimately linked with tourism.

What’ special?
The Lake District National Park is famous for its magnificent scenery, varied wildlife and cultural heritage. The semi-natural woodlands add texture, colour and variety to the landscape and also provide a home for native animals and plants. The National Park has the highest concentration of outdoor activity centres in the UK. It is the birthplace of mountaineering.
