Task
1. Read the text and answer the questions according to the text.
1.
When was the town of Vladimir founded?
2.
What famous monuments are there in Vladimir?
3.
What cultural facilities are there in Vladimir?
Vladimir
is one of the ancient Russian towns of the "Golden Ring of Russia".
It is situated on the left bank of the Klyasma river, 168 kilometers from
Moscow. It was founded as the fortress and named in honour of its founder Vladimir
Monomakh in 1108.
In
the 12th century Monomakh`s grandson Andrei Bogolubsky moved his court here and
the town became the political and cultural centre. In those years many
beautiful churches and cathedrals were built – the Cathedral of Assumption
(1158), the Cathedral of St. Demetrius (1194), the Golden gate (1164). These
wonderful monuments of the past attract crowds of tourists not only from other
parts of the country, but also from abroad.
The
Golden Gate is a rare monument of the old Russian military architecture. It saw
the invasion of the Mongol hordes that took the gold from the gates to their
country. Now in the museum there is an exposition devoted to the defenders of
the Russian land from foreign invaders.
The
Assumption Cathedral is famous for works of Andrei Rublev and Daniil Chorny.
They decorated the gallery, the altar and the walls with beautiful frescoes.
The priceless icon of the Virgin of Vladimir (now at the Tretyakov Gallery)
used to adorn it. The cathedral was burnt down four times and reconstructed
many times over. At first it had only one dome, later four domes were added to
it on four sides.
The
Cathedral of St. Demetrius is an outstanding white-stone medium sized monument
of old Russian architecture. We don’t know the names of the architects but
thousands of people admire this masterpiece.
In
18th century Vladimir became the centre of gubernia. The Museum of
regional studies and the Museum of crystal were built in the town.
The
centre of the town is very old and not very well planned. The streets are
short, narrow and crooked, but at the same time quiet, cosy and lined with
trees.
There
are several avenues in Vladimir which are broad, straight and long. Lenin
Avenue with its good pavements and zebra-crossing is the busiest part of the
town. Side by side with shabby low houses there are splendid magnificent modern
buildings but there are no skyscrapers in Vladimir.
Vladimir
is famous for its squares, parks, churches and cathedrals. Today the town has
two universities, some colleges, children's musical and sports schools. There
are two theatres, a concert hall, a picture gallery, two cinemas, libraries,
stadiums, swimming pools, plants and factories. We are proud of our native
town.
