Sure, we’re virtually connected to our phones 24/7 now, but what if we could be literally plugged in to our phones? That’s already starting to happen. Last year, for instance, artist Anthony Antonellis had a chip put in his arm that could store and transfer data to his handheld smartphone. And researchers arealready experimenting with sensors that turn human bone into living speakers.

Scientists in London are developing swallowable capsule-sized chip that will control fat levels in obese patients and generate genetic material that makes them feel “full”. The U.S. military has programs to identify any person using face scanning device. Some people see it as a doubtless advantage: improved crime fighting, secure elections and never a lost child again. However, such technologies can hammer against social norms and raise privacy issues. And one day there might be a computer to see all, know all and control all.

One of the challenges for implantable tech is delivering power to devices which are inside human bodies. You can’t plug them in as you do with your phone or computer. You can’t easily take them out to replace a battery. A team in Cambridge is working on specific bio batteries that can generate power inside the body, transfer it wirelessly where needed, and then simply melt away.

Soon tattoos will not only make you look cool but will be able to perform useful tasks, like opening your car or entering smartphone codes with a fingerpoint. Researchers have made an implantable skin fibers thinner than a human hair. Scientists are working on the chip that can be put inside a finger through a tattoo-like process, letting you unlock things or enter codes simply by pointing.

The British research team is developing pills with microprocessors in them that can text to hospitals directly from inside your body. The pills can share inside info to help doctors know if you are taking your medication properly and if it is having the desired effect. Moreover, in case of emergency, it can send a signal to the computer and the ambulance will come straight away.

Lately touchscreens are everywhere – from computers, phones, tablets to car systems and vending machines. Even doorbells now include touch screen controls. One has to wonder: are we moving to a world of only touchscreen devices? And the answer is probably yes. We are coming to an age where every flat or even curved surface could be made a touchscreen and we can operate from it.

Visiting the Royal Parks

I am not much of a cinema goer but I do enjoy a good film. I usually buy a film

online and watch it at home. I’ve got a wide screen TV and a projector.

Sometimes, if I am in the mood, I use it. You feel as if you were in the cinema but

I find it a bit cozier on my sofa. It’s also a lot cheaper to watch films at home. If I

invite some friends, they bring popcorn and drinks and then you really can't tell the

difference.

Speaker B

The cinema is my life. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve wanted to become an

actress. I would watch all the new musicals and children’s films and dream of

playing the leading parts. When I was in my last year at school, I took acting

classes to prepare for the New York Theater and Cinema Academy. After

graduating, I auditioned at the Academy and got in! It was the happiest moment of

my life, even more so than getting an Oscar two weeks ago!

Books are much more fun than films. I know most film directors want to make a

film out of some classical book but so often the film versions don’t turn out well.

At least to my taste. When you watch a film you are forced to believe what you see

and when you read a book, you can imagine the characters and have your own

personal experience with the plot. Watching a film just doesn’t trigger your

imagination the way reading does.

I can’t remember the last time I was at the movies. I think it was the day I broke

my arm. Crazy as it may be, I broke my arm going to see a new film. My girlfriend

had asked me to go to the cinema with her, so I bought the tickets for Friday night.

We were meeting inside the Star Cinema. It’d been raining hard and the pavement

was very wet. I was five minutes late for my date, so I hurried up the stairs and

slipped. The last thing I remembered was the terrible pain in my arm

I never miss a new film. I have a notification sent from the local cinema to inform

me about any change in their shows. They change the schedule once every two

weeks, so I go to the cinema every other week. Our local cinema is rather small, so

they show two or three films at a time. Sometimes I watch a film every day for

three days in a row to see all that’s new in the market. It does get expensive

sometimes, but it’s worth it, the way I see it.

Speaker F

The theatre has more of an appeal to me than the cinema. I would go to see a play

more often if they had more theatres around where I live. Local theatre companies

have only two shows a year and that doesn’t satisfy my appetite, so I travel to

London to see different shows may be once a month or so. Seeing real threedimensional

people on stage is a lot more interesting than watching them on the

screen. I love watching actors’ facial expressions and the interaction between them.

The dream bridge

This is a real life story of engineer John Roebling building the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, USA back in 1870. The bridge was completed in 1883, after 13 years. In 1869, a creative engineer named John Roebling was 32 ______ by an idea to build a spectacular bridge connecting New York with the Long Island. 33 ______, bridge building experts throughout the world thought that this was an impossible task. Task 1. Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it.

    The first maps were drawn by explorers to help them find their way home and show people where they had been. The maps showed the shape of the land, distances between places and special features such as caves and old trees.

   Nowadays, maps show the towns and villages, and the roads, railways, rivers and mountains. Symbols are used to show all the different things on a map and there is a key to explain what the symbols stand for.

   Over the centuries, people explored most of the Earth and put together the map of the world we use today. Maps of the world or large areas are often either “political” or “physical”. The political map shows territorial borders. The purpose of the physical map is to show features of geography such as mountains, soil type or land use including roads, railroads and buildings.

You are considering buying the appliance and now you’d like to get more

information. In 1.5 minutes you are to ask five direct questions to find out

Целью промежуточного экзамена по английскомуязыку является определение уровня иноязычной коммуникативной компетенцииэкзаменуемых. Основное внимание при этом уделяется речевой компетенции,т.е. коммуникативным умениям в разных видах речевой деятельности:аудировании, чтении, письме, говорении, а также языковой компетенции, т.е.языковым знаниям и навыкам.

Следовательно, экзаменационная работа по английскому языку содержит письменную

и устную части. Письменная часть, в свою очередь, включает четыре раздела:«Аудирование», «Чтение», «Грамматика и лексика»и «Письмо».

Успешное выполнение заданий на контроль рецептивных видов речевой деятельности обеспечивается знаниемлексических единиц, морфологических форм и синтаксических конструкций инавыками их узнавания/распознавания. Задания раздела «Письмо» и устнойчасти экзамена требуют от экзаменуемого, помимо этих знаний, навыковоперирования лексическими единицами и грамматическими структурамив коммуникативно-значимом контексте. Орфографические навыки являютсяобъектом контроля в заданиях раздела «Грамматика и лексика»,а также заданий раздела «Письмо».

В работу по английскому языку включенызадания с кратким ответом изадания открытого типа с развернутым ответом.

В экзаменационной работе предложены следующие разновидностизаданий с кратким ответом:

– задания на выбор и запись одного или нескольких правильных ответовиз предложен-ного перечня ответов;

– задания на установление соответствия позиций, представленныхв двух множествах;

– задания на заполнение пропуска в связном тексте путемпреобразования предложенной начальной формы слова в нужнуюграмматическую форму;

– задания на заполнение пропуска в связном тексте путем образованияродственного слова от предложенного опорного слова.

Ответ на задания с кратким ответом дается соответствующей записьюв виде цифры или последовательности цифр, записанных без пробелов иразделительных символов; слова (в том числе в его аналитической форме,записанной без пробелов и разделительных символов).
