It was in this theatre that the premiere of the operas of M.I. Glinka, the founder of Russian classical music, “Life for the Tsar” (more known as “Ivan Susanin”, 1842) and “Ruslan and Liudmila” (1845) took place. These operas laid the traditions of the musical epos for many generations of the Bolshoi actors. The famous ballet master Marius Petipas who often came to Moscow have staged eleven ballet shows here, the most significant of which was “Don Quixote” by L. Minkus.

Ballet was also considered by the Proletkult leaders as an alien and unnecessary art. In 1927 the premiere of “Boris Godunov” with the restored scene “Near the St. Basil’s Cathedral”.

The great future of the Bolshoi Theatre.
The Bolshoi has sponsors now. A Fund of the development of the Bolshoi Theatre has been founded. The UNECSO have taken this palace of arts under its protection as a monument of the world’s culture heritage.
And each time when the silence of the velvet semi-darkness is broken by the first sounds of an overture to a new performance and the gilded curtain opens one can’t help bit believe in the great future of the Bolshoi Theatre.
