A
Many years ago there lived a man whose stories became some of
the funniest stories in the world. Now people know him as Mark Twain but his
real name was Samuel Clemens. He was born in1835 and grew up in the little
town of Hannibal, Missouri. When Sam was twelve his father died. The shock
changed him and he was a different boy. He stopped his little-boy games and
thought about his mother's hard work and money problems. Sam went to work in
his brother Orion's printing shop. Не
learned a lot there. Sam changed many jobs and visited many places in the
USA. People in America began to read and like what he wrote, and soon his
stories became popular all over the world. He wrote many books, but
Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer, the stories of his own childhood, are still
the favourites of boys and girls everywhere.
B
Henry
Ford was a man whose ideas changed the world.
Ford
came from a down-to-earth family. He was born in 1863 on a farm near Detroit,
USA. But when he was a boy he didn’t want to live on the farm because he
hated farming and he adored machines. When he was 16, he went to Detroit to
work in a machine shop. He changed different jobs and learned how to use
different machines. He began his experiments with machines at home. In 1896
he built his first automobile.
In
1903, when H. Ford was 40, he started the Ford Motor Company. At that time
the automobile was a toy of rich people. Henry Ford decided to change the
situation. The company made the Model T Ford in 1908. It was small and even
people who were not rich could buy it. Ford could do this because he was the
first to use an assembly line. The assembly line was a revolution in cars
making. Ford also paid his workers 5US dollars per day. It was a large sum in
1914. Ford attracted both national and international attention.
Henry
Ford had more than one billion US dollars. He spent more than 40 million
dollars on charities. He started the Ford Foundation that supported different
programmes in education and culture.
C
Evangeline
Booth had a very good name because she was the world’s greatest woman
evangelist. She was born in London on Christmas Day in 1865 and almost from
her early childhood she wanted to be like her father, William Booth, who was
an example for her. The Booth home was an exciting place of good deeds and
wonderful ideas for helping others. Her father left the official church and
went his own way.
He
thought he save people not but theories but mu actions. He not only wanted to
bring God to the poorest people of London, but he fried to hive the food and
to get jobs for them. His seven children were interested in his work and when
they grew followed him. Hу started the Salvation Army. He wanted
to follow the evangelists who tried to change bad men into good ones.
Evangeline
was only thirteen when she came to work in the Salvation Army. People called
her the “White Angel” for her good deeds. She raised money for poor people,
supported sick ones, brought them food and helped the people who drank.
Evangeline Booth lived in New York for some time. She worked there hard to
help people in trouble. President Woodrow Wilson gave her a medal for her
work. Then she came back to London and became the world leader of the Army.
She always believed that people of good will could work hard and make the
world around us better.

And

Are
you sure?
Not

The man whose ideas changed the world is
corresponding to the facts.
The
heroine of the Salvation Army

The
