APE ART
Works of art by apes have been displayed
in art galleries around the world since the 1950’s. It’s not a joke. Apes are
natural artists and ape art is becoming big business.
Ape art did not
use to have any form. In fact, paintings by chimps were nothing more than paint
thrown onto a canvas, and it was impossible to tell what the pictures were
meant to show. (15)_____. They can even use sign language to give their
paintings titles.
Koko and Michael
live in California and they have been painters since they were very young. (16)______.
At first she was shy, and did not want to show anyone her pictures, but now
Koko’s and Michael’s art work is displayed in exhibitions and they have many
fans. Unfortunately, not all of their paintings survive, as they often eat
their work as soon as it is finished.
Sadly, there is
bad news for these recently discovered artists. (17)______. There are
only 600 gorillas and a few thousand lowland gorillas left in the world. The
work of Koko and Michael is being used to help raise money to save the world’s
gorillas.
Some people might
laugh and say that these paintings are not art, but who really knows what art
is? (18)______. Although you cannot buy Koko’s and Michael’s original
paintings, many people are prepared to pay a great deal of money to buy high
quality copies of the originals. (19)______. Not only will you receive a
colourful picture or T-shirt, but you will also be helping to save one of the
world’s most intelligent species. Is there a better way to spend money?
A.
Koko learnt to draw when she was just three years old.
B.
The truth is, there has been a great deal of
commercial interest in gorilla art in all its forms.
C.
They even buy T-shirts printed with their pictures.
D.
No one wants to buy gorilla paintings.
E.
Gorillas are an endangered species.
F.
Today, however some gorillas, like Michael and Koko,
are able to paint quite realistic pictures of the objects around them.

ONE TO WATCH!
Essay by Jessica Bourne, aged 14
I’m a big fan of
films featuring the spy James Bond. I`ve got most of them on DVD. We’ve
recently bought Quantum of Solace, in which Daniel Craig plays
the part of Bond. I don`t know why the film’s got that name – but it’s a great
movie, anyway.
All the actors
who’ve played James Bond have been great, but Daniel Craig, who’s made lots of
other films, plays the part better than any of them. Even though he doesn’t
talk very much, I think he’s the most perfect actor for the role. He even does
a few of the more dangerous things in the film himself, instead of getting
someone else to do them. I did wonder sometimes whether he’d be clever enough
to defeat the bad people – but I’m not going to tell you the ending. The
actress who stars with Craig gives a fantastic performance too – I loved all the
glamorous clothes she wore!
The director
probably had a hard job making this Bond film as full of action as earlier
ones. But the excitement starts right at the beginning here, with a car chase
along a mountain road, and plenty of other thrilling scenes, too – Bond leaping
off tall buildings and so on. Unfortunately I found the story difficult to
follow in places, and it also seemed to be over very quickly – it lasted under
two hours. I also felt there weren’t as many jokes as in the old Bond films. And
where was all the ridiculous
Bond equipment – the underwater car or
exploding watch that everyone laughed at? This is more serious, darker Bond
film, but I still really enjoyed it.

Jessica?
A

24.

action.
C I’m not sure the title tells you much

Holly:
So
what have you decided about your birthday party, Max?
Max:
Not
much, Holly. To be honest,I haven’t thought about it at all.
Holly:
Well,
it’s getting close, soyou need to send out the invitations soon. By
thisFriday, really, to give people time to reply.
Max: I don’t really
know who to invite. My school friends,of course, and Mark,Jack and Sean.
Holly:
And
Tilly and her sister.
Max: Yes. And Alicia. I
hope she’ll be there. But I’d prefer not to have a hugenumber of guests.
Holly:
Twenty?
Max: Not that many, if possible.
It’s only a small flat, and I only really want myclose friends there anyway.
Holly:
I
can understand that.
Max: Even so,some of
them won’t know each other. My friends from round herearen’t the same
kind of people as the ones from school. They like different things, really.
Holly:
Well,
that should make the party more fun!
Max: Maybe, but it’ll
make it harder to choose music that everyone likes. I’ll haveto go down to the
supermarket and buy some different kinds of music, to keep everyone happy.
Holly: If I were you, I’d
make my own CD.
You’ve got some great music on yourcomputer, and you could put lots of
different things on it.
Max: That’s true.
Though not everyone will want to dance, or listen to music all thetime. Maybe I
should put a DVD on in another room?
Holly:
Not
if it’s just any old movie. That would be like watching TV at home.
Max:
No,
I was thinking of getting a new film that most people haven’t seen yet.
Holly:
That’s
a good idea!There
are sure to be some who’ll want to watch it.
Max:
Right.
Holly:
So
the only thing left to decide, I think, is which day to have the party.
Max:
It’s
got to be a weekend, so not the Thursday. Saturday would be best, I think.
Holly: I agree the
weekend’s best, but the problem is that lots of people will be awayon the
Saturday. Perhaps you should have it on the Friday?
Max:
I
don’t know.
Holly:
I
don’t think Alicia can come on the Saturday.
Max: All right, then.I’ll
have it the day before.
Holly:
I
thought you might.
Task
2
Teacher: Listen
everybody. I’m going to give you some important informationabout our trip to
the capital on Friday.
Firstly,
the coach is coming to pick us up from school and we leave at
nine-fifteen.
But don’t wait outside the main gate, even
if you see the coach waiting there. Come to the classroom first because
I need to take the register before we leave, to make sure everyone’s here. OK?
Lunch is provided, so don’t bring your own
food. You’ll each get a sandwich, either meat, egg or cheese – you can choose –
plus some chocolate and a piece of fruit. But you do need to bring a drink.
So don’t forget to tell your parents that.
When we get to the capital, the coach
drops us at the sports stadium where there’s a big coach park. From there we’ll
walk to the Transport Museum, which is our first visit. After that, it’s
on to the Natural History Museum.
In the afternoon, we’re going to the
national Concert Hall, but not to see a concert or dancing because the event
that’s on is actually not a musical show at all, it’s a fashion show.
When it’s finished, a famous clothes designer will tell us about her work.
At the concert hall, there’s a large
souvenir shop where you can buy presents for your families. Be careful though –
the books and games are expensive, but the postcards are very good
value. You’ll have about fifteen minutes to look around.
Now, remember the coach will go at five-thirty.
So we have to leave the shop at five o’clock at the latest, to walk back to the
coach park together. Tell your parents we’ll be back at school here by
seven-fifteen, OK?
So I think that’s all…
