II.                 READING

Задание 1. Прочитайте тексты и установите соответствие между заголовками 1-8 и текстами A-G.Запишите свои ответы в таблицу. Используйте каждую букву только один раз.  В задании есть один лишний заголовок.

1. A false stereotype                                          5. One and the same name

2. An unlucky symbol                                        6. The national food

3. A colourful present                                        7. A talisman for luck

4. A world famous journey                                8. Old holiday traditions

A. When you think of the Irish, you often picture a red-haired person dressed all in green. However, it's just a popular myth which has grown into a tradition, particularly in the United States. It's customary in Ireland to wear green clothes only on St. Patrick's Day. Lots of people are tricked by this cliche. However, originally, the colour associated with Saint Patrick was not green, but blue.

B. In Ireland, the colour green was long considered to bring bad fortune. The reason is that in Irish folklore green is the favourite color of the Good People (the proper name for fairies). Myths run that they are likely to steal people, especially children, who wear too much of the colour. In the past, a girl would never wear anything green on her wedding day.

C. Christmas is a very important celebration in Ireland. After dinner on Christmas Eve, it is common for families to leave milk and bread on the table as a sign of friendliness and kindness. Another custom is to leave the door unlocked. A lit candle is left in a window during the night. It represents help for any traveller who is passing by.

D. Potatoes form the basis for many traditional Irish dishes. They are eaten boiled, mashed, fried, baked, you name it. Potatoes are mixed with cabbage or green onions to make traditional Irish dishes. They are also made into potato cakes and used in soups or stews. It’s common to find potatoes cooked in two different ways on the same dinner plate.

E. The shamrock is still a popular sign of good fortune in Ireland. It is believed that anyone who possesses one will be blessed with fortune in everything, even in gambling, and will be saved from the evil of witches. There are certain conditions to be met so that its power remains effective: the owner of the shamrock must keep it away from the public eye and never give it to anyone else.

F. The name Gulliver is known to everyone due to the book or the film about the fantastic trip of the English doctor. However, not all of us remember the name of the author — Jonathan Swift, an Irish writer, who was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1667. In his book Gulliver’s Travels a man went to an island where strange tiny people lived. His life there was full of adventures and dangers, he met there friends and enemies.

G. Ireland is known as the native land of limericks — short humorous poems that have five lines. They make people laugh and are easy to remember! Lots of poets and writers were fond of limericks. The word “limerick” probably comes from the Irish town of Limerick. The short poem has made the town known all over the world.

(3 Not stated).

Sharks

Sharks are probably the most feared of all sea animals. There are more than 360 kinds of sharks in the waters of the world. But, scientists say, only some species are dangerous to man.

They live in oceans throughout the world but are usually found in warm waters.

Sharks are remarkably successful animals. The first sharks lived on our planet more than 420 million years ago! They are fast and strong. They have very few parasites and are hardly ever ill. They have almost no enemies except other sharks.

Some people think that all sharks are big. But some kinds of sharks are no bigger than your hand. The smallest shark is about 16 centimeters long and weighs about 28 grams.

The biggest shark — and the largest of all fish — is the whale shark. It may grow up to 12 metres long and may weigh over 14 tons, over twice as much as an average African elephant! The whale shark has three thousand teeth but it will never bite you. It is quite harmless. It eats only tiny shrimp and fish.

Different sharks have different habits. Some kinds live in the depths of the ocean and are very seldom seen. Others are found near the surface. A few species enter rivers and lakes. Scientists believe that one species, the Ganges River shark of India and Pakistan, lives only in rivers.

Some sharks are loners, others like to gather together. Blue sharks are called the wolves of the sea because they stay together in packs.

Blue sharks often swim after a ship for days. A long time ago sailors thought this meant that someone was going to die. Today we know that sharks follow ships because of the noise they make. When the garbage is thrown into the water the sharks stop and eat it.

Most fish lay eggs. But most sharks do not. Their babies are born alive and completely developed. They do not need parental care. A baby shark is called a pup. The pup of the great white shark is almost the size of a man. As soon as they are born the pups go their own way. It isn’t safe to stay near a hungry mother.

A shark’s brain is small but its teeth are big. It has many rows of teeth. When a tooth breaks off a new tooth moves up to take its place. In some species new teeth replace the rows of older ones as often as once a week!

What do sharks eat with all these teeth? Fish and more fish, other sharks, seals, turtles, crabs. Almost anything that swims in the sea.

Sometimes sharks eat things that are not food. No one knows why. All these things have been found inside big sharks: a wallet, a drum, a bottle of wine, a chest of jewels and a suit of armour!

Do sharks eat people? Yes, they do. If a person is near a shark, the shark may attack. But it doesn’t happen very often. Fewer than 100 shark attacks a year are reported throughout the world.

The most dangerous shark in the sea is the great white shark. It is so named after its white belly. The great white shark may be more than 6 metres. It can sink a boat, it can bite a man in two, it can even swallow a man whole. It circles its prey, appearing from nowhere, and often approaching from below.

However, specialists say, more people die from bee stings than from shark bites!

Sharks do not go hunting for people. But people do go hunting for sharks. And then they have to be careful. A shark may look dead. Then all of a sudden it can ‘wake up’ — and attack!

Задание 1

Dialogue А

А:

What took you so long? The manager's furious.

В:

There was an accident on the motorway, and the traffic was unbelievably slow. It took me three hours to get here.

А:

Oh, yeah, I just heard the news on the radio - that there was a serious accident with three cars and a bus. Now, quick, get these papers, make copies and send them to our partners. Mrs. Lewis has been asking where they are.

В:

Right. Hope she will forgive me.

А:

Anyway, it's good that you’ve arrived safe and sound.

Dialogue В

А:

Late again, Jim.

В:

Sorry, Ms West. I overslept. My alarm didn't go off this morning. I promise, it will never, ever happen again.

А:

Unfortunately, it’s not a new story, Jim. It happens almost every week, even twice a week sometimes.

В:

I know but I did set the alarm last night, honestly. I don’t know what happened.

A:

Perhaps you should buy a new one. Now…, take your seat and open your book at page twelve. We’re discussing the article on traffic congestion.

Dialogue С

А:

Oh, my goodness, the traffic is so slow. It’s driving me mad! We've been in this traffic jam for an hour already.

В:

Calm down. I think there's an accident ahead. We can’t do anything about it.

А:

Can I open the window - it's getting hot in here.

В:

Sure. But turn down the music. It's too loud.

A:

Why don't we take a different route? I'll look at the map and see what we can do.

Dialogue D

А:

I can't believe how bad the weather is today!

В:

Yes, according to the weather report, we will be flying through a pretty nasty storm.

А:

Won’t they cancel the flight? I don't really like flying in this kind of weather.

В:

Cancel? No. Boarding has already been announced. Don’t worry. Usually the pilot gets enough altitude to fly above it. I am sure everything will be fine.

A:

I hope so.

Задание 2

Speaker A

My cousin worked as a tour guide and once she was going to show a group of Japanese students around the city. She usually delivers excursions in English but that time she asked me to go with her as I know some basic Japanese phrases. I enjoyed helping her very much and the next day I decided to take a training course for tourist guides. I've been working as a guide for a year already and I love it!

Speaker В

Many young people nowadays want to start working early, while they are still at college. I think that's good as early careers give them work experience and they can find better jobs after graduation. It's certainly difficult to learn and work at the same time but, surprisingly, young people who work usually achieve better academic results than their non-working classmates.

Speaker С

I started to learn Spanish recently and I'm planning to take up Italian too. The thing is that I want to find a job in the tourist business. Working in that sector means that I'll have to communicate with people from different countries and the more languages I know — the more opportunities I'll have. At the moment I can speak English — it's my native language — and I'm pretty fluent in French.

Speaker D

A career choice is one of the most difficult decisions teenagers have to make. It was difficult for me too but fortunately I found a place where I got friendly and professional help in choosing a future job. First, I filled in a questionnaire online. Then I was interviewed by teachers and psychologists. They selected the most appropriate lines of business for me, which were medicine and engineering, and arranged for me to visit a hospital and a chemical engineering company!

Speaker E

My parents wanted me to become an accountant like them. I didn't know much about the profession but applied to the Economy Faculty. Then I got a job with a financial company. Soon I understood that the job was definitely not for me — I make mistakes, have difficulty in working with financial computer programs and ... I simply don't like it! I want to make a new career start but I'm afraid of making another mistake.

Задание 3

Jason:

Hi, Liz! How are you doing?

Liz:

Oh, Jason! Sorry, I didn't see you.

Jason:

Yeah, I noticed that.

Liz:

We are going to the seaside tomorrow and I'm kind of overexcited about it. I've never seen the sea before — we used to go to the country every summer. It's certainly nice, but...

Jason:

I understand. I worry when we are leaving for holiday too, though we travel quite often. And on the plane I often get panic attacks.

Liz:

Are you afraid of flying?

Jason:

No, not at all. I feel panicky because I think I've forgotten something — to return an MP3 player to a friend for example. That's funny. Are you flying, by the way, or going by train?

Liz:

Flying. It would be cheaper by train or by car but it takes too long and there's not enough room for all of us in the car. You're going with your family, aren't you?

Jason:

Yes. Mum and Dad, my sister, Granny... And this creates a problem. What? You don't want to go with your granny?

Liz:

No, it's not that! I love travelling with her. Granny tells us lots of amusing stories and she's always so cheerful. My sister and me are very lucky to have such a granny. The problem is my pets. Since everyone's leaving there's no one at home to take care of them. The hotel Dad reserved is not animal-friendly; they don't accept pets.

Jason:

I see. I'd like to have a dog or a cat, but doctors say it's not for me. They make me cough and sneeze and may cause some more serious illness. And what pets have you got?

Liz:

A goldfish, a parrot and a cat.

Jason:

The goldfish is not a problem — you can leave it with me. And the parrot, too. My mums always been against any birds as they are messy and noisy, but I'm sure she won't mind it for a couple of weeks.

Liz:

Oh, Jason, it'd be a great help! But what shall I do with my cat? All animal hotels in the city are booked.

Jason:

Yeah, it's holiday time. Look, my aunt lives not far from here. She's got two cats and I'm sure she'll agree to take care of your cat, too.

Liz:

Do you think she'll manage three cats at once? It's not easy, and my cat is quite a character!

Jason:

No one could do it better. She worked as a vet in the national park in Kenya for several years and treated wild tigers and leopards. Your cat, whatever he is, wont be a problem.

Liz:

Oh, excellent.
