  Not many places on earth have produced more questions than Stonehenge. The tall, standing stones are a mystery to scientists, historians, and religious people .

  Placed in a very purposeful circle, these stones stand quietly in a large English field near Salisbury. It is as if they are keeping a secret from the world.

  Through the studies of Stonehenge scientists know a few facts for sure. They know that people built Stonehenge over a period between 5100 and 3600 years ago.

  That means that it took 1500 years to build the final Stonehenge. It also means that Stonehenge is over 5000 years old! Scientists know that the building of Stonehenge involved different generations of people.

  There are really five circles, one inside another. The famous stones that we see in pictures of Stonehenge today are just the middle two circles.

  Scientists also found that some of the stones of Stonehenge were carried a huge distance across Britain. These stones are a special blue stone. This blue stone is found in only one part of Britain, the Preseli mountains in south-west Wales.

  These stones weighed up to 4 tons each. Other stones of Stonehenge were even heavier! Scientists found one stone to weigh 50 tons.
