London Bridge has a very long history. In AD43 Romans came to Britain. They founded a city and called it Londiniym.
They built a wooden bridge over the Thames. It was the first bridge over the Thames. A wooden bridge, called London Bridge, existed from Roman times unit the XII century.
In 1209 it was rebuilt in stone. Old London Bridge was built on stone arches resting on piers. The old stone bridge became London’s most famous landmark and was the only bridge over the Thames in London.
It was 20 feet wide. There were streets of houses and a chapel along it. The houses often had shops. People could buy all kinds of things from street sellers.
There were two gates and it was the custom to place the heads of traitors after they had been executed.
The road over the bridge was about 4m wide. It was so narrow that people, horses and carts often met with an accident. In 1733 a «keep left» rule was enforced to keep the traffic moving. This became the rule of road in Britain.
The bridge acted as a dam and during winter the river often froze upstream.Sometimes there were Frost Fairs, stalls and entertainments were arranged on the ice - puppet shows, football games and even barbecues.
Until Westminster Bride was built in 1738 London Bridge was the only road over the river. It gradually crumbled and was taken down in 1831. A new bridge was built in 1831 to replace the old one. This in turn was demolished in 1967 and rebuilt in Lake Havasu City, the USA, as tourist attraction.
The present London Bridge was opened in 1973, but now it is not the only bridge over the Thames, but it is one of many others.
