THE HEROES OF GREAT PATRIOTIC WAR FROM SARATOV REGION
On 22 June, 1941 Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union without declaring war. 190 motorized divisions, 5.5 million soldiers, 3,700 tanks and 5,000 aircrafts were deployed against the Russian land to crush and destroy it.
All the people of the country did everything they could to bring about victory. More than a million people fought the enemy behind the front lines: many Nazi soldiers were killed by partisans, who were everywhere, trains were derailed, munitions dumps blown up.
Many Soviet people displayed outstanding heroism and courage. Thousands of soldiers and ordinary people were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, the highest distinction in the Soviet Union. 11,635 Heroes of the Soviet Union, 101 twice Heroes, 3 thrice Heroes, and 2 four-time Heroes were awarded personally or collectively for heroic feats in service, some of them posthumously
Much more than 11,635 people fought for their Motherland displaying heroism but remained unknown for us. Not only men but also women fought for the freedom. There are 87 heroes of the Soviet Union among women.
The people of Saratov region took part in the Great Patriotic War too. A lot of them displayed heroism and courage.
Ivan Vasilyevich Panfilov
He was in 1893 in Saratov region, in 1915 he was taken to Czar army, took part in World War I, in the Civil War .Then he served in the Middle Asia. In 1941 Panfilov formed the 316th Rifle division. In October 1941 the division stayed not far from Volokolamsk, defending the way to Moscow. He was the first who used echelon anti-tank artillery defense. All the German attacks were broken.
But then Panfilov’s division had to keep back attacks for 6 days. They all fought to death. During the battle, Panfilov received an order from Marshal Zhukov, stating that if he retreated he would face a firing squad. General Panfilov's brigade of 28 soldiers destroyed 60 tanks and several hundred soldiers. Only 3 soviet soldiers survived. For that battle Panfilov was posthumously awarded the distinction of Hero of the Soviet Union in 1942.
Nikolai Mikhailovich Skomorokhov
Nikolai Mikhailovich Skomorokhov was born on 19 May, 1920 in Saratov region. During the Great Patriotic War N.M. Skomorokhov made 605 sorties, participated in 143 air battles, he personally shot down 46 enemy airplanes. He was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on 23 February, 1945. In August 1945 he was awarded the second “Gold Star”.
Viktor Talalikhin was born on 18 September, 1918 in Saratov region. He was one of the first who commited the ramming during the Great Patriotic War. He was awarded the title of Hero of Soviet Union for exemplary performance of combat tasks and for displaying courage and heroism. He died in 1941 during the air battle.
The 9-th of May is the day of victory in the Second World War, which was the Great Patriotic war for the Russians (1941-1945 years). On this day all Russian people remember those who fought for the victory and reached the independence and freedom from German fascism. Of course, some of them are not alive but we love, remember and respect them all.
