President’s Day
is celebrated in February to honor two of American greatest presidents – Gorge Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The holiday is celebrated in the United States on the third Monday in February.

George Washington was the first President of the United States of America. He led the
American army during the Revolutionary War for American Independence from Great
Britain. The Victory in a six-year-long war made George Washington a hero and in 1787
when the Constitution of the US came to choosing the head of state, everybody voted for G. Washington. As the first President G. Washington had to make a lot of important decisions for the first time. G. Washington set up a lot of political institutions, chose the permanent site for the nation capitol (on Dec. 1,1800), which was given his name, and ordered the building of the White House – the home of all American presidents ever since. For all the great things he did Americans called him “the Father of our Country”.

Long before he became the politics, G. Washington was a surveyor and planter. He enjoyed a peaceful life as a landowner on his family’s estate near Mount Vernon. G. Washington served two terms as a president. The inauguration speech is very important and is viewed as a historical event. Washington’s second inauguration speech is the shortest had ever give(only 135 words). He was known for being a great inspiration to many people even with his short speech.

The 16th president of h USA-Abraham Lincoln is one of the most famous American presidents. Thanks to him the country successfully went through financial, military, moral and other types of crisis. He was also the person who put an end to the slavery. His Emancipation Proclamation issued in 1863 freed all slaves in the rebellious states. He was proclaimed the national hero of the American people. Lincoln made an enormous contribution to development and consequent modernization of the country.

A. Lincoln became the president at the age of 51. Not everybody was happy at first when he was elected, but later he managed to make friends with some of his opponents in the government and was able to attract them to work towards common goals. Lincoln remains as one of the most beloved presidents of America, while during the presidency he often subjected to severe criticism.
On the Apr. 14th 1865 Lincoln was fatally shot in a theatre. Nowadays, in honor of
A. Lincoln there is a great memorial located in the heart of Washington D.C.

At the time of his death in 1799, George Washington owned some 300 slaves. However, before his passing, he had become opposed to slavery, and in his will he ordered that his slaves to be freed after his wife's death.
When it took effect in January 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation freed 3.1 million of the nation's 4 million slaves.
To be eligible for the presidency, a person must be a native-born citizen of the United States (or born abroad of two citizen parents); at least 35 years of age; and have lived in the United States for at least 14 years.
