Introduction
The topic of my work is «Famous people». This topic seems to me
very interesting because the whole world is very rich with outstanding
people. There are lots of famous British and Russian musicians,
sportsmen, scientists, writers, explorers and so on.
Almost
everyone in the world admires someone. It is especially true for young people.
Most of them have idols. They try to look and act like them. It is useful when
a person looks up to someone with positive qualities or to someone who has done
lots of good and worthy things. All the people have their
celebrities in different areas, but idols are mostly found in
such spheres like music or cinema.
It
was interesting to know who would be famous among Russian and British people
for students in our school.
The purpose of this paper is to study the brightest people and to find out
the best well-known people according to the students.
To achieve this aim we
have learnt a great amount of information from the Internet, books and
magazines and held the investigation – we asked our schoolmates (pupils of 6-7
forms) and some questions connected with the topic.
The objectives of
the work are:
·
to
develop skills of research work;
·
to
study the literature on the topic that is available on the internet and in the
libraries and summarize the valuable information;
·
to
conduct a survey and to discuss the results of our research paper at the school
conference;
·
to
increase a level of English;
·
to
share opinions with our teachers about famous people.
Hypothesis:
to identify an idol among students.
The subject of the
investigation is the most popular celebrities among students.
The object of the
investigation is outstanding celebrities.
Chapter 1.
Russian famous people
1.1 Nyusha 1990–2006: Childhood and adolescence
Anna
Shurochkina was born on 15 August 1990 into a family of musicians(Appendix2).
Her father, Vladimir Shurochkin (born April 12, 1966) was a former member of
the musical group Laskoviy May ("Ласковый май"). Her mother, Irina Shurochkina sang in a
rock band in her youth. When Anna was two years old, her parents divorced.
However, the father and his daughter still spent a lot of time together.
Nyusha's sister, Maria Shurochkina, was twice European Junior Champion in
Synchronised swimming and her brother, Ivan Shurochkin, does Martial Arts
Stunts. Nyusha first came to the studio at age 5, with her song "Песенка большой медведицы"or in English
"Song of the Great Bear".
At
age 11 she began performing on stage as the group Grizli. The group toured in Russia and Germany. At age 17 she changed
her name from Anna to Nyusha.
Early career 2007–2009
In
2008 Nyusha took seventh place in the international contest "New Wave
2008" and also wrote the final song of the heroine in the dubbed version
of the film Enchanted. In 2009, she released
her first single "Вою на луну" or in English "Howl at the moon." Her composition
won "Song of the Year - 2009". At the concert "Europa Plus Live
2009" she introduced the new songs "Angel" in Russian and the
English "Why?"
"Choosing a Miracle"(
"Выбирать чудо") popularity growth 2010-2011:
In
2010 Nyusha released her second single "Не перебивай" (Do not
Interrupt). The song became the most popular Russian-language hit in April
2010. The singer was nominated for the award Muz-TV 2010 in the category
"Breakthrough of the Year". Later in the year she also released the
album " Выбирать чудо" (Choosing a Miracle). The third single is the album title,
and peaked at number 1 in Russia by the end of 2010 and beginning of 2011, and
is one of her most successful songs to date. It´s also one of her most viewed
videos on YouTube.
In
2011, she released three new singles: "Больно" (It Hurts) and
"Выше" (Higher). These
are the fourth and fifth singles from her debut album, "Выбирать чудо". Both singles were
number 1 in Russia, scoring her third and fourth number one singles
respectively. She also released "Plus Pres" ("We can make it
right"), a duet with the French Gilles Luka.
On
March 22, Nyusha was nominated for the MUZ-TV in 2011, in the categories of
"Best Singer" and "Best Album". In October, Nyusha won the
nomination of "Best Russian Act" on the "MTV Europe Music Awards
2011". In December, the magazine "Billboard" included the song
"Выбирать чудо" (Choosing a
Miracle) in its list of the top publishing songs in 2011, and the song "Больно" (It Hurts) in the
most impressive and memorable Russian pop songs in the last 20 years.
Further success and development
2012–2013:
In
January 2012, the song "Выше" began to occupy the top position in many
charts around Russia. On April 28 she gave a concert in the famous "Crocus
City Hall" in Moscow, because of her first tour promoting her debut album
"Выбирать чудо" During the
concert, the singer released three new songs: two singles ("Воспоминание" and "Объединение" ) and a duet with
her father ("You are my life").
A
month before the show, March 28 Nyusha was nominated again for the "MUZ-TV
Awards 2012" in two categories ("Best Song" (for "Выше") and "Best
Female Artist"). The award ceremony was held on June 1 in SC
"Olympic". The singer won "Best Song". The same month she
released officially the song "Воспоминание" (Memories), topping the charts in Russia
and the Ukraine, becoming her fifth and first number one in those countries
respectively. It's considered her most successful song to date and her most
popular one. Also, this song was on top of the "Top Hit Weekly Audience
Choice" for 19 consecutive weeks, more than any other in the history of
the site. From September 6 the music channels started to promote the video of
the song.
On
November 27 premiered the video for "Это Новый Год" (It's New Year).
The song was part of the soundtrack of the animated film "The Snow
Queen". On December 1, Nyusha won two awards: the "Gramophone Golden
Radio of Russia" (for the song "Воспоминание"), and a diploma
from the festival "Song of the Year 2012" (for the song "Выше").
In
March 2013, she released the song "Наедине" (Alone) as the second single of her second
studio album, expected to be released by the end of the year. This song also
topped the charts in Russia, becoming the sixth single to achieve it.
1.2
Viktor Tsoi
Viktor Robertovich
Tsoi was born in June 1962 and died in 15
August 1990). He was a Soviet musician, songwriter, and a leader of the band Kino(Appendix3).
He
is regarded as one of the pioneers of Russian rock and has many devoted fans across the countries of the former
Soviet Union even today. Few musicians in the history of Russian music have
been more popular or have had more impact on their genre than Viktor Tsoi and
his rock band Kino. Aside from that, Tsoi contributed a
plethora of musical and artistic works, including ten albums. Viktor Tsoi died
in a car accident on August 15, 1990, aged 28.
Early life
Tsoi
was born in Leningrad, Russian
SFSR, Soviet Union. He was the only child
of Valentina Vasilyevna Tsoi (8 January 1937 in Leningrad, Soviet Union – 28 November 2009 in Saint Petersburg, Russia), a Russian schoolteacher, and Robert
Maximovich Tsoi (born 5 May 1938 in Kyzylorda, Kazakh SSR, Soviet Union; today's Kazakhstan), a Soviet Korean engineer. Tsoi's Korean
ancestry can be traced back to Sŏngjin,North Hamgyong, Korea (today's North Korea), where his great-grandfather Choi Yong-nam was born.
Tsoi
attended Serov
Artistic Academy in Leningrad from 1974 to
1977. In 1977, when Tsoi was 15
years old, the academy expelled him. The
academy said that he was expelled for poor grades. RT said "Rock scene has a negative impact to the education"
Beginnings of Kino
Leningrad's Rock Club was one of the few public places where rock bands were
allowed to perform. It was there in 1982, at their first annual Rock Concert
that Viktor Tsoi made his stage debut. He was playing as a solo artist
supported by two members of Aquarium. Tsoi's innovative lyrics and music impressed the crowd.
Before
making it big, Tsoi said that the problem with music was that no one wanted to
take chances. He wanted to experiment with lyrics and music in order to create
something fresh that no one had ever heard before. Tsoi succeeded in his goal.
Shortly after the concert he recruited other musicians and they formed Kino, which in Russian means both "cinema" and
"film". They recorded a demo tape at Tsoi's apartment. This tape was
quickly passed around Leningrad, and then all over the country by rock
enthusiasts. Kino began to gain popularity.
First album
In
1982, Kino released their first Samizdat album 45. This album first showed Tsoi's willingness to approach political
topics in his music, something few other artists were willing to do. In his
song "Commuter Train" (Russian: Электричка) he discussed a man
stuck in a train that was taking him where he didn't wish to go; this was
clearly a metaphor for life in the Soviet Union, and the band was quickly
banned from performing this song live. Regardless, the political message of the
song made it popular among the youth of the anti-establishment movement that
now began to look to Viktor Tsoi and Kino as their idols.
In
1982, Tsoi met Marianna Rodovanskaya, whom he married in 1985. She was a
source of support and family for Tsoi, giving birth to their son Alexander
(Sasha) on 5 August 1985. Marianna Tsoy became the owner of rights to her
husband's songs after his death. She survived Viktor by 15 years before dying
from cancer in 2005.
Kino
displayed more of their political views at the 2nd Leningrad Rock Club Concert.
The band won the competition with Tsoi's anti-war song "I Declare My
Home... [a
nuclear-freezone]" (Russian: Я объявляю свой дом ... [безъядерной зоной]).The song's popularity
was fueled by the ongoing Afghan War which was claiming the lives of thousands of young Soviet
citizens. Several sources claim that Viktor Tsoi went to a psychiatric hospital
to evade conscription, but it is considered a
mere myth as doctor-patient
confidentiality prevents any reliable source from revealing any relevant
information.
Gorbachev era
Kino
was still not getting Soviet media attention when Mikhail Gorbachev was appointed General Secretary of CPSU in 1985. The social and economic reforms associated with the
latter's name exposed social and economic problems of the Soviet Union allowing
open discussion of them in the media. Restrictions on the media were loosened
and rock bands became mentioned in the newspapers and shown on TV. In 1986 Tsoi
used the open atmosphere and public sentiment to release a song titled
"[We want] Changes!" (Russian: [Мыждем] перемен!). The song called on
the young generation to demand changes within the current system and spread
Kino's name all over the nation.
Chapter 2
English famous people
2.1The band-Thirty Seconds to Mars
Thirty
Seconds to Mars is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1998. The band
consists of Jared Leto (lead vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards),Shannon Leto (drums, percussion) and Tomo
Miličević (lead guitar, bass,
strings, keyboards, other instruments) (Appendix4).
The
band's debut album, 30 Seconds
to Mars(2002), was produced by Bob
Ezrin and released to critical
acclaim but only to limited commercial success. The band achieved worldwide fame with
the release of their second album A
Beautiful Lie (2005), which
received multiple certifications all over the world, including platinum
in the United States. Their next release, This Is War (2009), reached the top ten of several
national album charts and earned numerous music awards. In 2013, Thirty Seconds
to Mars moved to Universal Music and released the fourth album, Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams (2013), to critical and commercial
success. As of September 2014, the band has sold over 15 million albums
worldwide.
Thirty
Seconds to Mars has consistently enjoyed sold out tours and numerous headlining
festival slots. The band is noted for its energetic live performances and for
fusing many music genres. They have been compared to the sounds of bands such
as Pink Floyd, The Cure, Tool, and U2, for their philosophical and
spiritual lyrics, concept albums and their use of experimental music
Formation
and first years (1998–2000) Thirty Seconds to Mars started in 1998 in Los Angeles, California, as a
collaboration between brothers Jared Leto and Shannon Leto, who had been playing music together since their
childhood. The duo later expanded to a four piece when they added
guitarist Solon Bixler and bassist Matt Wachter to the line-up. Additional guitarist Kevin Drake, who first auditioned
for the position of bassist, also joined the band as a touring musician. The
band played its first concerts under different names, before finally settling
on the name "Thirty Seconds to Mars", which was taken from a
rare manuscript titled Argus Apocraphex. Jared Leto spoke of the
name as "a reference, a rough translation from the book. I think the idea
is interesting, it's a metaphor for the future," he explained.
"Thirty seconds to Mars—the fact that we're so close to something that's
not a tangible idea. Also Mars being the God of War makes it really
interesting, as well. You could substitute that in there, but what's important
for my brother and I, is that it be imaginative and really represent the sound
of our music in as unique a way as possible." He described it as a
name that "works on several different levels, a phrase that is lyrical,
suggestive, cinematic, and filled with immediacy." When Thirty Seconds to
Mars first started, Jared Leto did not allow his vocation as a Hollywood actor
to be used in promotion of the band.
By 1998, the
group performed gigs at small American venues and clubs. Their eponymous debut
album had been in the works for a couple of years, with Leto writing the
majority of the songs. During this period, the band recorded demo tracks such
as "Valhalla" and "Revolution", or "Jupiter" and
"Hero", which later appeared on the band's debut album as
"Fallen" and "Year Zero" respectively, but also
"Buddha for Mary". Their work led to a number of record labels
being interested in signing Thirty Seconds to Mars, which eventually signed
to Immortal Records. In 1999, Virgin Records entered into the contract.
Musical style
The style of
the band's first studio album combined progressive
metal and space
rock with influences and
elements from electronica, utilizing programming and
synthesizers. Ryan Rayhill from Blender described the album as a "high-minded space
opera of epic scope befitting
prog-rock prototypes Rush,"
and wrote that Thirty Seconds to Mars "emerged with an eponymous debut
that sounds like Tool on The Dark Side of the Moon,"
referring to the 1973 album by Pink Floyd.
Whereas the eponymous concept album's lyrics focus on human struggle and self-determination, A
Beautiful Lie's lyrics are more personal and the music introduces intense screaming vocals. The transformation that resonates throughout the album
reflects the personal and artistic changes experienced by the band members
before and during the creation of the record. The album widened the band's
sound by combining elements from progressive rock, hard rock and emo. Such alternative rock style has been compared to bands
like The Cure, U2 and The Smashing Pumpkins.
Their third
release This Is War was described as "an extremely progressive
rock sound with killer choruses," drawing inspirations from experimental
Pink Floyd to melodic M83. Chris
Harris from Rolling Stoneconsidered it "an ambitious collection of experimental rock" shaped by the band's personal struggles and legal battle
with their record label. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of All Music acknowledged the band's progression, referring to the
overall style of the record as a mixture of synth
rock, heavy
metal, and progressive rock.
In Love,
Lust, Faith and Dreams the band experimented with different instruments
and drew influences from a wider and more varied range of styles. The
album mixes experimental instrumentation with elements both symphonic and electronic, and the music introduces a minimalist
approach full of ethereal sonics. The record carries the concept album
format of This Is War and expands the spectrum to revolve around the
themes after which it is named.
2.2 One
Direction
One
Direction (commonly abbreviated as 1D) are an English-Irish pop boy band based in London, composed of Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. In addition, Zayn Malik was a member until his departure from the band, announced on
25 March 2015. (Appendix5). They signed with Simon Cowell's record label Syco Records after forming and
finishing third in the seventh series of the British televised singing competition The X Factor in 2010. Propelled to international success by social media, One Direction's four albums, Up All Night (2011), Take Me Home (2012), Midnight Memories (2013) and Four (2014) broke records, topped charts in most major markets,
and generated hit singles including "What Makes You Beautiful", "Live While We're Young", "Story
of My Life" and "Steal My Girl".
Their achievements include five Brit Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, eleven MTV Europe Music Awards, and nineteen Teen Choice Awards out of nineteen nominations, among many others. According to
Nick Gatfield, the chairman and chief executive of Sony Music Entertainment UK, One Direction
represented a $50 million business empire by June 2012. They were proclaimed
2012's "Top New Artist" by Billboard. According to the Sunday Times Rich List, by April 2013, they had
an estimated personal combined wealth of £25 million ($41.2m) making them
the second-wealthiest musicians in the UK under 30 years of age. In 2014, Forbes listed them the
second-highest earning celebrities under 30, with the group earning an
estimated $75 million from June 2013 to June 2014.
After
the release of Four, One
Direction became the first band in the U.S. Billboard 200 history to have their
first four albums debut at number one. Their
third album, Midnight Memories,
was the biggest-selling album worldwide of 2013 despite being released in later
November. In 2014, Billboard named One Direction the top artist of the year.
2010–11: The X Factor
In
2010, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson auditioned as solo
candidates for the seventh series of the British televised singing competition The X Factor. They failed to progress to the
"Boys" category at "judges' houses" but were put
together to form a five-piece boy band at Wembley Arena, in London, England, in July 2010, during the "boot
camp" stage of the competition, thus
qualifying for the "Groups" category. Nicole Scherzinger, a guest judge, and Simon Cowell have both claimed to
have come up with the idea of forming the band. In 2013, Cowell said that it
"took him 10 minutes to put them together as a group". Subsequently, the group got together
for two weeks to get to know each other and to practice. Styles came up with the name One
Direction. For their qualifying
song at "judges' houses", and their first song as a group, One
Direction sang an acoustic version of "Torn". Cowell later commented that their
performance convinced him that they "were confident, fun, like a gang of
friends, and kind of fearless as well." Within
the first four weeks of the live shows, they were his last act
in the competition. The group
quickly gained popularity in the UK.
One
Direction finished in third place and immediately after the final, their song
"Forever Young", which would have
been released if they had won The
X Factor, was leaked onto the internet. Shortly
afterwards it was confirmed that One Direction had been signed by Cowell to a
reported £2 million Syco Records record contract. Recording for their debut album began
in January 2011, as they flew to Los Angeles to work with Red One, a record producer. A
book licensed by One Direction, One
Direction: Forever Young (Our Official X Factor Story), was published by HarperCollins in February 2011, subsequently
topping The Sunday Times Best Seller list. The
same month, the boy band and other contestants from the series participated in
the X Factor Live Tour. During the tour, the group performed
for 500,000 people throughout the UK. After
the tour concluded in April 2011, the group continued working on their debut
album. Recording took place in
Stockholm, London and Los Angeles, as One Direction worked
with producers Carl Falk, Savan Kotecha, Steve Mac, and Rami Yacoub, among others.
Musical style
One
Direction's debut studio album, Up
All Night (2011), is
predominantly a pop music record, containing elements of teen pop, dance-pop, pop rock, with electropop and rock influences. Digital Spy's Robert Copsey
described the album as a "collection of PG pop rock with killer
choruses", while The New York Times considered it "full of easy rock-inflected pop, blithe
and sometimes clever." Jason
Lipshutz of Billboard acknowledged that the album
demonstrates an originality in sound that was "necessary for the
revitalization of the boy band movement". The songs "One Thing" and
"What Makes You Beautiful" were particularly noted for the genres of
power pop and pop rock, for their "powerhouse" guitar riffs and "forceful"
choruses.
Their
second studio album, Take Me Home (2012), is characterised by
rock-inherited pop, prominent electric guitar riffs, bright synthesisers, a homogeneous sound and message, and the pitch-correcting soft ware Auto-Tune. Alexis Petridis of The Guardian interpreted its signature sound as a "peppy, synth-bolstered take on early-80s new-wave pop, heavy on clipped
rhythms and chugging guitars," which, he said, is at least an improvement on
the substitute contemporary R&B "that was once the
grim lot of the boyband." Jon
Caramanica, writing in The New
York Times, considered the album "far more mechanical" than their
debut album, although noted that it is sonically and lyrically similar. The album's lyricism speaks of falling
in love, unrequited love, the insistence that
flaws are what make a person unique, commitment, jealousy and longing for past
significant others.
Erica
Futterman for Rolling Stone favored their live acoustic performances as both showing, "Horan's ability to play
guitar, as well as One Direction's admirable live vocals. There was no need to
worry about a backing track or a bum note, a pleasant realization at a pop
show." Herald Sun 's Cameron Adams opined
that One Direction have "strong pop voices". Melody Lau of the National Post wrote, "It's easy to get lost in inherent appeal of
their perfectly coiffed dos and almost-too-put-together preppy style but
somewhere in the midst of all the love-struck squeals of teenage girls are guys
who can actually sing and, to a certain extent, entertain." Jane Stevenson of the portal site Canoe concurred: "What I
didn't really prepare myself for was that they all can actually sing in
concert." Chris Richards,
writing in The Washington Post, dissented from the
approval: "As the five traded couplets, it was tough to imagine a future Justin Timberlake, Ricky Martin or Bobby Brown emerging from the pack.
No one voice stood out." Mike
Wass of Idolator felt One Direction's "surprisingly accomplished
effort" of Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody" proved that One Direction are "more than
capable" of evolving their sound.
Their
third album Midnight Memories (2013) is a pop rock record, a slight
departure from the band's original teen pop sound. Liam Payne called Midnight
Memories a "slightly rockier and edgier" album than their previous
material. The album is heavily influenced by 80's rock and folk music and briefly integrates
elements of dub step, notably in "Little White Lies". The album's
lyrical themes primarily revolve around love, heartbreak and sexual
intercourse. Many critics praised its lyrical depth and musical composition, as
well as the group's level of involvement in the production process.
Their
fourth album Four (2014) was released on 17 November 2014.
Payne once again claimed that the album would be "edgier" and that
the group had written most of the songs for it; Horan came up with the name of
the album, commemorating the fact that it is One Direction's fourth record to
date and that it has been four years since the band's formation. Signifying a further maturation of
their pop sound, the album's first single, Steal My Girl, was dubbed by Billboard as "no What Makes You Beautiful, but its Coldplay-like piano pop could be a good direction", and that the band was "not
entirely ready to let go of its bubble-gum days". Rolling Stone described the record as "saturated with retro
vibes"; its songs "split the difference between big, splashy Eighties pop rock and more elegant
Seventies flavors - a very millennial move that's not so far from what Haim's hit Days Are Gone did last year."
Conclusions
According
to the results of the survey we can make some conclusions.
The main
aim and objectives were achieved by means of
learning a great amount of information from the Internet, books and magazines
and held the investigation – we asked our schoolmates (pupils of 6-7 forms) and
some questions connected with the topic.
We studied all
celebrities who were given more voices then others. Every famous person had its
own hard way to be popular. Nyusha began her career at age of 5 and she began
performing on stage as the group Crizli at the age of 11 and then she changed
her name and became popular singing by her own.(Appendix2) .Victor Tsoi made
his stage debut in 1982 at the age of 20 after many changes in his life and a
public liked him too.(Appendix3). The band One derection became popular after
their 3-d album which was the biggest –selling of 2013 and in 2014 billboard
named the band the top artist of the year.(Appendix 5). And the last group «30
seconds to mars» (Appendix 4) achieved worldwide fame with the release of the
2-d album «A beautiful lie». (Appendix 6).This band became popular among our
students too.
There are
many notebooks, badges, bags with the images of these famous people in Russian
today. (Appendix Avon).
The disciples gave their preference to
the band: «30 seconds to Mars» because they like their work, style, voices.
And as it turned out, the students
prefer more international stars than the Russian. (Appendix 1).
As one proverb
says: «Tastes differ».

Questionnaire Results
Students (35 students were asked)
21 people answered that they prefer foreign
celebrities. And only 14 said that they like Russian stars.
According to a poll in the first place among
foreign stars were an American rock band «30 seconds to Mars».
Among Russian - singer Nyusha.
Their preference was explained by the fact
that foreign stars have choreography, the singing, the design of the entire
show better than Russian.
