1.Introduction.
Dear friends. My name is
Daria. I like to read books very much. Most of all I enjoy reading books about
mysteries. I have recently read a book and then watched a film about Loch Ness
Monster. I was impressed. I learned that the monster lives in Scotland. My
friends and parents could’t answer my questions about Scotland , that’s why I
learned myself.
2. Scotland: facts.
Scotland is a country in the north of Great Britain. It is
a part of the United Kingdom. It includes over 790 islands. Scotland has got
three natural regions: The Southern Uplands, the Central Lowlands and the
Highlands. Scotland is a very small country. It is 274 miles (441 kilometres)
long. At its widest point it is 154 miles (248 kilometres).
The country is washed by the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea
and the Irish Sea.
2.1 National symbols.
The Scottish flag is a white cross on a blue background.
The cross is the cross of Saint Andrew, the main patron of Scotland.
The national symbol of Scotland is a thistle. But why is it
that Scotts chose a humble small plant as their national Symbol? There is a
legend. A party of Scott warriors were sleeping at night. A group of Vikings
sailed. They secretly tried to attack and capture the Scotts. But one of the
Vikings stepped on a thistle with his bare foot and shouted. In such a way a
little flower saved Scotts!
A thistle.
3. Kilts.
Scots often wear kilts. It is a traditional clothes of men
and boys in Scotland.
A kilt is a woolen skirt with a checked pattern called
‘tartan’. Each clan (a Scottish word for ‘a family’) has its tartan. Nowadays
Scotts wear kilts on formal occasions, such as a wedding or film festival. It
is strange but Scotts wear kilts for sports events.
Man wear a leather money bag called ‘a sporran’ with the
kilt.
4.
Mountains.
Scotland is a mountainous country. It consists of: the
North-West Highlands, the Grampian Mountains, the Central Lowlands and the
Central Lowlands. The Grampian Mountains are located in the middle of the
country. Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the British Isles. It is 1,343
metres high. It is located in the west of the Grampian Mountains.
5. Nature.
Scotland is famous for its beautiful nature. There are not
only great mountains, wonderful waterfalls, charming green valleys, but also
amazing lakes, which are called lochs.
Thousands of people travel to Loch Ness every year. It is a
big lake. It is about 35 km long and 1500 meters wide. It is 400 metres deep.
There have always been lots of stories in Scotland about beasts in the water.
St. Columba made the first written reference to a monster in Loch Ness
in the year 565. One day he was passing by the lake when he saw a large beast.
The monster tried to attack a man who was swimming in the lake. St. Columba prayed and
the man was saved. The modem legend of Loch Ness dates back to a newspaper
article in 1933. The “monster” has been a media favourite since then, and today
the Loch Ness monster is a major tourists attraction.
6. Castles
The capital of
Scotland is Edinburgh, well known for its castle.
This most famous of Scottish castles has a long building
history. The oldest part, St Margaret's Chapel, dates from the 12th century;
the Great Hall was built by James IV around 1510; the Half Moon Battery by the
Regent Morton in the late 16th century; and the Scottish National War Memorial
after the First World War. The castle houses the Honours (Crown Jewels) of
Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, and the National War Museum of Scotland. There
is a popular cultural festival in the castle every year.
One more castle which I like is Culzean Castle. Culzean is
the perfect place for a day out, if you like walking, enjoy admiring gardens,
have an interesting architecture.
The castle was built by Robert Adam between 1777 and 1792.
In the castle the guests can see the fine collection of paintings and
furniture. If you're interested in guns, don't miss the display of pistols and
swords. Culzean has a beautiful park with fountains and ponds.
7.Culture
The bagpipes are the
traditional musical instrument of Scotland. There are special
festivals where people
perform as classical as modem music.
The Scottish food is tasty but fat. On special occasions
Scottish people eat haggis. It is lamb, heart, liver and animal fat boiled
inside a sheep stomach.
Scotts enjoy the Highland Games. They are competitions for
Scottish dancing and Scottish sports such as ‘tossing the caber’. A caber is a
5-metre long thick piece of wood. It is very heavy and it is difficult to throw
it a long way. Throwing the hammer is another Highland Games sport.
‘Hogmanay’ is the name for the Scottish celebration of the
New Year’s Eve. People go “first footing’ - they visit a friend’s house after
midnight and give the friend a piece of coal, some bread, some salt and a coin
for luck.
8. Conclusion
Working over the report I have known a lot of interesting
facts about Scotland. Sum up, Scotland is an amazing country with its history,
culture and traditions. I’d like to visit this country very much.
