RIDDLES ЗАГАДКИ
What God never sees,
What the king seldom sees,
What we see every day;
Read my riddle, I pray.
(An equal /
He went to the wood and caught it.
He sat him down and sought (seek искать, разыскивать)it.
Because he could not find it,
Home with him he brought it.
(Splinter /
Thirty white horses
Upon a red hill,
Now they stamp,
Now they champ
Now they stand still
(Teeth)
Elizabeth, Elspeth, Betsy and Bess,
They all went together to seek a bird's
nest;
They found a bird's nest with five eggs
in,
They all took one, and left four in.
The fiddler and his wife,
The piper and his mother.
Ate three half-cakes, three whole cakes,
And three quarters of another.
Two brothers we are,
Great burdens /ноша/ we bear/нести/.
On which we are bitterly / 1)
резко, едко 4) резко, сильно/ pressed;
The truth is to say,
We are full all the day,
And empty when we go to rest.
There was a girl in our town,
Silk an' satin was her gown,
Silk an' satin, gold an' velvet,
Guess her name, three times I've telled it.
Little Nancy Otticoat
With a white petticoat /
And a red nose;
She has no feet or hands
The longer she stands
The shorter she grows /
As I was walking in a field of wheat /
I picked up something good to eat;
I kept it till it ran alone.
.
As I was going to St. Ives,
I met a man with seven wives.
Each wife had seven sacks
Each sack had seven cats,
Each cat had seven kits.
Kits, cats, sacks, and wives,
How many were going to St. Ives?
Two legs sat upon three legs
With one leg in his lap;
In comes four legs
And runs away with one leg;
Up jumps
two legs,
Catches up three legs,
Throws it after four legs,
And makes him bring back one leg
:
In marble /мрамор/ halls as white as milk,
Lined with a skin /на кожаной подкладке/ as soft as silk,
Within a fountain /резервуар/ crystal-clear,
A golden apple doth /устар.
does/ appear.
No doors there are to this stronghold /
Yet thieves /воры/ break in and
steal the gold.
