Milling
machine is a device that rotates a circular tool. It has a number of cutting
edges symmetrically arranged about its axis; the workpiece is commonly held in
a vise or similar device clamped to a table that can move in three
perpendicular directions. Disk- or barrel-shaped cutters are clamped through
holes in their centres to arbors (shafts) attached to the machine spindle; they
have teeth on their peripheries only or on both peripheries and faces. An end
mill is a cutter shaped like a pencil with a tapered shank that fits into the
machine spindle; it has cutting teeth on its face and spiral blades on the
lateral surface.
In the
milling operation, the workpiece is carried either on a table that is driven
manually or by power against the rotating cutter. Milling machines usually
produce flat surfaces, but any shape that can be ground on the cutter will be
reproduced on the work. To mill the teeth of a spur gear, a disk-type cutter
with its cutting edges in the shape of the space (groove) between the teeth of
the gear is used, milling the gear blank one space at a time.

In the
vertical milling machine the spindle axis is vertically oriented. Milling
cutters are held in the spindle and rotate on its axis. The spindle can
generally be extended, allowing plunge cuts and drilling. There are two
subcategories of vertical milling machines: the bed type milling machine and
the turret milling machine.
A turret milling
machine has a stationary spindle and the table is moved both perpendicular and
parallel to the spindle axis to accomplish cutting. Turret milling machine
often have a quill, which allows the milling cutter to be raised and lowered in
a manner similar to a drill press. There are two methods of cutting in the
vertical (Z) direction: by raising or lowering the quill, and by moving the
knee.
In the
bed type milling machine, however, the table moves only perpendicular to the
spindle's axis, while the spindle itself moves parallel to its own axis.
Turret
milling machine are only practical as long as the machine remains relatively
small. As machine size increases, moving the knee up and down requires
considerable effort. Therefore, larger milling machines are usually of the bed
type.

A
horizontal milling machine has the same sort as the vertical one does but the
cutters are mounted on a horizontal spindle across the table. Many horizontal
milling machines also have a built-in rotary table that allows milling at
various angles.
The real advantage
of end mills and the other types of tools lies in arbor-mounted cutters, called
side and face mills, which have a cross section rather like a circular saw, but
are generally wider and smaller in diameter. Because the cutters have good
support from the arbor and have a large cross-sectional area, quite heavy cuts
can be taken. These are used to mill grooves.
Plain
milling machines are used to shape flat surfaces. Several cutters may be
connected together on the arbor to mill a complex shape of slots and planes.
Special cutters can also cut grooves, bevels, radii, or indeed any section
desired. These specialty cutters tend to be expensive.
It is
also easier to cut gears on a horizontal milling machine. Some horizontal
milling machines are equipped with a power-take-off provision on the table.
This allows the table feed to be synchronized to a rotary fixture, enabling the
milling of spiral features such as hypoid gears.

Metal
planing is the process of removing the surface layer of a surface in order to
give it the required shape and size. A planer is a type of metalworking
machine tool that uses linear relative motion between the workpiece and a
single-point cutting tool to cut the work piece. There are several
types of machines designed for working with metal at different stages of the
production of parts.
The
main purpose of parallel-planing machines is the processing of disoriented
planes, mainly on large parts. The workpiece is
fixed on the table, making a reciprocating (main) movement. Cutters are fixed
in calipers. The cutting of the metal layer occurs during the working stroke of
the table with the workpiece in the direction of the arrow. Parallel-planing
machine has a mechanism for moving the cutter in the vertical or horizontal
direction. Parallel-planing machines designed for
universal work are divided into four groups by design: manual, one-rack,
two-rack and portal.
Transverse
planing machines are mainly intended for the manufacture of relatively
small parts. The cutter makes a horizontal reciprocating motion with speeds of
the working stroke and idle. This movement is
characterized by the number of double strokes per minute of the slider. One double
stroke consists of a working stroke in which the cutter cuts a layer of metal.
Thus, in transverse planing machines, the movement of the cutter is the main
movement - the cutting movement, and the movement of the workpiece in the
transverse direction is the feed movement.

There is one of
the most common transverse-planing machine. The main unit of this machine is
the bedplate, on the horizontal guides of which the slider moves with a
caliper. A crossbar moves along the vertical guides of the bedplate, and a
table moves along the guide rails of the crosspiece, which is supported by the
column for greater stability.
The
workpiece is fixed on the table, on the horizontal and vertical supporting
surfaces of which for this purpose T-shaped grooves are provided. The cutter is
fixed in the tool holder mounted on the caliper.
The
main working movement (rectilinear reciprocating) is communicated to the slider
with a cutter.
The
bedplate is a cast-iron box-shaped case located on a plate. Internal ribs of
the bedplate provide the necessary strength and rigidity. There are flat horizontal guides on the upper part of the
bedplate to which the straps are attached with screws. A slider moves along
these guides.
There
are flat guides for vertical movement of the crossbar on the front wall of the
bedplate on which the table is fixed. There is a gearbox inside the bedplate
and a rocker mechanism. There is a bracket on the rear wall of the bedplate,
where the electric motor is mounted. There is a tray to drain the oil from the
slide rails.

Parallel-planing
machines are mainly used at the small batch production, as well as in repair
shops. They are intended for processing flat surfaces on workpieces that are
either impossible or inconvenient to process on milling

The
main units of the parallel-planing machine are (pic. 1): bedplate 1, table 2,
crossbar 3, vertical calipers 4, portal 6, feed box of vertical and side calipers
7, side column 9. Depending on the device of the traverses, they distinguish
two-rack machines, in which the traverse is supported by two-racks, and
one-rack.
The
bedplate of a two-rack parallel-planing machine is a cast iron
box-section with two guides of a flat and of a V shape. It is made up of
sections that are bolted along installation. A box-shaped table moves along the
guides of the bedplate with reciprocating movement. One-rack
parallel-planing machines are used for processing large parts, which size
do not allow processing on a two-rack machine.
The
portal of the machine consists of two racks attached below to the bedplate, and
connected by a beam on top. The crossbar lifting mechanism is mounted in racks
and a connecting beam. There are two vertical calipers; a caliper feed box, a
duplicate control box and a clamping mechanism on the crossbar.
Modern
parallel-planing machines are equipped with planer calipers as well as with
grinding and milling ones.
