Hello, our dear readers of "Polar Lights"!
We have finished our issue # 6 and are really happy to
suggest you to read it or just look through it. It is devoted to different
English contests in which some students of our school participated during the
first term of the school year 2015-2016. Among these events I'd like to pay
your attention to the conference of research projects "Step to the
Future" and other contests on English and other school subjects as well.
All of them require a very high level of knowledge and we are very proud of our
students who have shown excellent results and become the winners.
Enjoy watching the pictures and learning about the great festival
"Initiation to Senior Students", the event which is traditionally
held in our school every autumn and has become very popular among the students of our school.
By the way, we are really proud to say that in May 2015
we participated in the All-Russian Contest of educational media-projects called
"Media Battle" and our issue # 5 was awarded with the special
Certificate.
Now we are looking forward to the most favourite
holidays for all children and adults New Year's Day and Christmas. So, we wish
you all a merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

Tell us about the competition in general. How many
steps were in it?
What were the nominations?
Anna:
Well, first of all, I'd like to say that the most
intelligent students took part in the competition. But there were two steps,
and only 10 students could participate in the second one. Young people were
nominated for an award in different nominations. My nomination was "A
competent student of educational establishment in Nefteyuga nsk".
Alice:
The first step was a presentation of our creative work done
during the last three years. Then the jury compared all the students' works and
sent you to the second step where there was a master class in the alt
department.
The aim of the contest was to find out the leader of all
the students. There were three main nominations such as sports, social
importance and art. I took patt in the nomination called Socia/ Impoåance,
Why did you decide to take part in
this contest? What goals and objectives did you have at the beginning? What was your motivation?
Anna:
My parents and teachers have influenced my decision,
because they are proud of my results in education. At the beginning of work I
absolutely knew that I would do everything possible to win. My goals were
creating an unusual presentation and being polite and active at the action. You
know, my motivation is always Victow.
Alice:
My teachers suggested me to take part in this competition
as they were sure that I could win the event.
My candidacy was nominated by my teachers so I tried to do
my best to represent my school.
Was it one single project or several events and
competitions?
Anna:
I don't remember, but I think it was my third or fourth
project. But my victory in this competition is really important for me, because
it is a high level of education for the best students.
Alice:
I have already represented some of my art works at
competitions and contests of different levels.
This social project included some different events which
were implemented for the main project.
What is your personal assessment for the work done?
What were your feelings and emotions? Did you reach your goal?
Anna:
As for my personal assessment, I am not actually satisfied,
because I know that I could present the project better. Besides, I should have
improved my declamatory skills. But, in general, I enjoyed that work. It was really
a good way to prepare for my future life at the university.
Alice:
A person can never achieve his goals because they are
always increasing. My childhood dream has come true because I have learned to
draw better.
I was very glad to know that I won in my nomination because I
made a huge job to which I have invested a lot of energy and emotions.
What advice do you give to the next competitors from
your school?
Anna:
Well, to begin with, I'd like to say that every person, who can take part in
this competition, should not be afraid of failure. Secondly, student should be
confident in themselves. Thirdly, competition requires many diplomas, so each
person should collect them. And the main tip is as follows: at the second step
every participant should answer the questions correctly, politely and
self-confidently.
Alice:
I advise all the next competitors to seek ways their
dreams could come true and they must not be lazy.
Julia:
First of all, you should believe in yourself and be
confident. The support should be found not only in your school, classmates and
teachers, but first of all, all the members of your family should support you.
It gives a real confidence in your forces.
If it is not a secret, what is the mayor's grant?
Anna:
The mayor's grant was a sum of money in 5,000 roubles.
It is not a very big prize in comparison with the other competition which is
called "7 steps to success". And I advise students to take part in
this project too, because it will open new opportunities for their future life
and, moreover, the District Council guarantees a better grant.
Alice:
It is very pleasant to be appreciated and I am going
to spend my money on buying new crayons and pencils.
Interviewed by Valeria Smolyakova and
Kristina Egorova.
This
competition is annually held in October. The name of the competition is «Step
to the Future». Schoolchildren study interesting and useful questions and
make their own researches. The themes of their researches are different: for
example, about languages, Maths and Psychology. I have interviewed some
participants from our school about their feelings and emotions,

Polina Rakshina, a student
of Grade 8A, has become a winner in the group of seniors. I've managed to speak
to Polina about her work.
-Who helped you with your research?
-My English teacher Veronika Amirovna
helped me a lot. I'm very grateful to her.
-What did you like most of all in your
work?
-I enjoyed analyzing hymns of different countries: Russia,
the USA and the Ukraine, in particular. -What was the most difficult?
-For me, the most difficult thing in my
work was to make the project according to the template
-Did you achieve the desired results?
-Yes, it's so cool, because I won the
third prize at the regional conference and now I am going to participate in the
All-Russian Contest.
As her teacher Veronica Amirovna says: <<Po/ina draws attention to the mutua/ and different features of the
Daria Toropinina, student of grade IOC
nationa/ image in the anthems
of the three states: the United States of America, the Ukraine and Russia, as there
are many controversial questions in the foreign mass media on the belonging of
the Ukrainians to the same roots as the Russians. As we know, it's advantageous
to accept this position to the western politics according to the geopo/itica/
location of the Ukraine to Russia. The hypotheses of the research paper on the
correspondence of the images in the nationa/ anthems of the Americans and
Ukrainians proves that both nations are equal in their tender feeling to their
Motherland and in their desire to fight with an enemy eterna//y as we//. But
the Russian anthem, on the contrary, expresses the country's majesty, great
power statehood »
Our congratulations to Polina and her
teacher with the Third Prize at the Regional Conference «Step to the Future»
The 7 graders Antonova
Natasha and Tashkinov Artem took part in the junior section of the conference
and also became the winners.
They have a very interesting topic for
their age. So, that's what they've told me about their work. -What is the topic
of your research?
-
The topic of our research work is as
follows: "Some aspects of translating proper names
from the book "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" by J.K.
Rowling.
-
What is the hypothesis?
-Our hypothesis is: while analyzing the translations of
proper names in one and the same book, but made by different translators, it
becomes obvious, that they don't always use similar ways of translating, and
they don't always follow the author's original idea. -Who helped you with the
research?
-Our teacher's name is Valentina Anatolievna. She helped us with this work.
You know, it's rather difficult to read English books in original. We couldn't
do it without our teacher. -Why are you interested in this topic?
-We watched all the films about Harry Potter, read the
books in Russian and noticed some differences in proper names translated into
Russian by different translators. It seemed to us very strange but interesting.
-What did you do then?
- We made the glossary of all proper names used by the
author, analyzed different ways of translating them into Russian done by Maria
Spivak and I.V. Oranskiy.
The person that I admire most of all is
the greatest Russian poet, novelist and playwright Alexander Sergeevich
Pushkin, born on the 6th of June 1799, in Moscow, Russia.
He is famous for his poems, short
stories, fairy tales, dramas and many other works, He studied in Tsarskoye Selo
Lyceum not far from Saint Petersburg. In 1817 Alexander Pushkin graduated from
the Lyceum.
Alexander liked reading books, in his
library there were more than 3500 books. He liked the Russian language but only
his grandmother Maria and babysitter Arina spoke Russian with Alexander. His
parents spoke French to him.
For the first time his poem was published
in one of magazines in 1814. Critics consider many of his works mas-
I am interested in leaning
his biography and I like to read his works too. My favourites are
"Dubrovsky" and "Young ladypeasant". He was a very creative
and imaginative person. In 1836 he founded the magazine called "The
Contemporary" where the best works of Russian literature were published.
In February 1831 he married Natalia
Goncharova, one of the most talkedabout beauties of Moscow and they had four
children.
He participated in 21 duels all in all.
His first duel was when he studied in Lyceum, The 21st duel was the last one
for the writer. On the 10th of February 1837 he died.
