Storyteller: Look – there are two nice rabbits; this is Bunny
Bright Eyes (Bunny Bright Eyes stands up and bows), and this is Bunny Long ears
(Bunny Long Ears stand up and bows). They are very good little rabbits, but the
Fox and Wolf don’t like them. They want to eat them up. Look: there are the Fox
and Wolf. Run away, Bunnies! Quick!
The rabbits run away. The Fox and the Wolf come up to
the front of the stage.
Fox: I am hungry.
Wolf: So am I. I am always hungry.
Fox: We must catch those rabbits and eat them up.
Wolf: that’s a good idea! I know how to catch them.
We shall catch them to day and eat them together.
Listen, my friend. You must go home and get into bed. I
shall go to the rabbits’ house and say that you are dead. They will come near
your bed to look at you and you will jump up and catch them!
Fox: (claps his hands): That’s very, very good, very clever! We
shall have a good dinner to-day.
Storyteller: So the Fox, runs home and gets into bed.
The two Bunnies again appear behind the low fence. The
Wolf goes up to the rabbits and stops at the fence.
Wolf: Hello1 look here! I have good news for you.
Rabbits: Good news! What news? Tell us, please!
Wolf: The fox is dead! Poor Fox! He was my best
friend!
(Wipes his eyes).
Bunny Bright Eyes: Is that true?
Bunny Long Ears: We must go and see!
Wolf: Oh, yes, go and see my poor friend! (He wipes his
eyes and goes away).
Bunny Bright Eyes: let us go! (Puts on her bonnet).
Bunny Long Ears: Yes, let us go. But I don’t
think it is true. ( Puts on his hat).
Storyteller: look! This is the Fox’s house. The
Fox is on the bed.
His eyes are shut. Here are the rabbits. They are near
the Fox’s house, but they are clever, they don’t want to go near the Fox.
Bunny Bright Eyes: Is Mr. Fox really dead? If he
is not dead he can catch us. We must not go near his bed.
Bunny Long Ears: Walt a minute!
Mr. Wolf says that Mr. Fox is dead. But dead foxes always
open their mouths. And Mr. Fox’s mouth is shut!
The Fox opens his mouth at once.
Bunny Bright Eyes: look! Fox’s mouth is open!
Bunny Long Ears: He can open his mouth, so he is not
dead! Run away, quick!
The rabbits run away. The Fox jumps out of the bed.
Fox: What a fool I am! And they run so quickly!
Oh, my dinner, my dinner!
